Sirach 38

1 Honor the physician because of necessity, and because the Most High created him.	1 Onora il medico per le sue prestazioni, perché il Signore ha creato anche lui.
2 For all healing is from God, and so he will receive gifts from the King.	2 Dall’Altissimo infatti viene la guarigione, e anche dal re egli riceve doni.
3 The expertise of the physician will lift up his head, and in the sight of great men, he will be praised.	3 La scienza del medico lo fa procedere a testa alta, egli è ammirato anche tra i grandi.
4 The Most High has created medicines from the earth, and a prudent man will not abhor them.	4 Il Signore ha creato medicamenti dalla terra, l’uomo assennato non li disprezza.
5 Was not bitter water made sweet with wood?	5 L’acqua non fu resa dolce per mezzo di un legno, per far conoscere la potenza di lui?
6 The benefits of these things is recognized by men, and the Most High has given this knowledge to men, so that he may be honored in his wonders.	6 Ed egli ha dato agli uomini la scienza perché fosse glorificato nelle sue meraviglie.
7 By these things, he will cure or mitigate their suffering, and the pharmacist will make soothing ointments, and he will form healing medicines, and there will be no end to his works.	7 Con esse il medico cura e toglie il dolore,
8 For the peace of God is upon the surface of the earth.	8 con queste il farmacista prepara le misture. Certo non verranno meno le opere del Signore; da lui proviene il benessere sulla terra.
9 Son, in your infirmity, you should not neglect yourself, but pray to the Lord, and he will cure you.	9 Figlio, non trascurarti nella malattia, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.
10 Turn away from sin, and direct your hands, and cleanse your heart from every offense.	10 Allontana l’errore, regola le tue mani, purifica il cuore da ogni peccato.
11 Give a sweet offering, and a memorial of fine flour, and fatten your oblation, but also give a place to the physician.	11 Offri l’incenso e un memoriale di fior di farina e sacrifici pingui secondo le tue possibilità.
12 For the Lord created him. And so, do not let him depart from you, for his works are necessary.	12 Poi ricorri pure al medico, perché il Signore ha creato anche lui: non stia lontano da te, poiché c’è bisogno di lui.
13 For there is a time when you may fall into their hands.	13 Ci sono casi in cui il successo è nelle loro mani;
14 Truly, they will beseech the Lord, so that he may direct their treatments and cures, for the sake of their way of life.	14 anch’essi infatti pregano il Signore perché conceda loro di dare sollievo e guarigione per salvare la vita.
15 He who sins in the sight of the One who made him will fall into the hands of the physician.	15 Chi pecca contro il proprio creatore cada nelle mani del medico.
16 Son, shed tears over the dead, and begin to weep, as if you had suffered dreadfully. And according to judgment, cover his body, and you should not neglect his burial.	16 Figlio, versa lacrime sul morto, e come uno che soffre profondamente inizia il lamento; poi seppelliscine il corpo secondo le sue volontà e non trascurare la sua tomba.
17 And though you will sink down into bitterness, bear his mourning for one day, and then be consoled in your sadness.	17 Piangi amaramente e alza il tuo caldo lamento, il lutto sia proporzionato alla sua dignità, un giorno o due per evitare maldicenze, poi consólati del tuo dolore.
18 And carry out his mourning, according to his merit, for one or two days because of this loss.	18 Infatti dal dolore esce la morte, il dolore del cuore logora la forza.
19 Yet sadness hastens death and overwhelms strength, and the sorrow of the heart bows down the neck.	19 Nella disgrazia resta il dolore, una vita da povero è maledizione del cuore.
20 When one is taken away, sorrow remains. But the resources of a destitute man is found in his heart.	20 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore al dolore, scaccialo ricordando la tua fine.
21 You should not give your heart over to sadness, but push it away from you. And remember the very end.	21 Non dimenticare che non c’è ritorno; a lui non gioverai e farai del male a te stesso.
22 Do not be willing to forget this; for there is no turning back. Otherwise, it will not benefit you, and you will cause great harm to yourself.	22 Ricòrdati della mia sorte, che sarà anche la tua: ieri a me e oggi a te.
23 Call to mind my judgment. For so shall it be for you also. Yesterday is mine, and today is yours.	23 Nel riposo del morto lascia riposare anche il suo ricordo; consólati di lui, ora che il suo spirito è partito.
24 When the deceased is at rest, let his memory rest also. And console him at the departure of his spirit.	24 La sapienza dello scriba sta nel piacere del tempo libero, chi si dedica poco all’attività pratica diventerà saggio.
25 The wisdom of a scribe is found in his time of leisure. So whoever has less to do will gain wisdom.	25 Come potrà divenire saggio chi maneggia l’aratro e si vanta di brandire un pungolo, spinge innanzi i buoi e si occupa del loro lavoro e parla solo di vitelli?
26 With what wisdom will someone be filled who holds the plow, and who boasts of the cattle prod that drives the oxen forward, and who is occupied in these labors, and whose only conversation is about the offspring of bulls?	26 Dedica il suo cuore a tracciare solchi e non dorme per dare il foraggio alle giovenche.
27 He will give his mind over to the plowing of furrows, and his vigilance to the fattening of the cows.	27 Così ogni artigiano e costruttore che passa la notte come il giorno: quelli che incidono immagini per sigilli e con pazienza cercano di variare le figure, dedicano il cuore a riprodurre bene il disegno e stanno svegli per terminare il lavoro.
28 Similarly, every craftsman and artisan, who crafts in the night as well as in the day, who sculpts graven seals, and who, by his diligence, varies the image, will give his mind over to the likeness of the image. And he will complete the work by his vigilance.	28 Così il fabbro che siede vicino all’incudine ed è intento al lavoro del ferro: la vampa del fuoco gli strugge le carni, e col calore della fornace deve lottare; il rumore del martello gli assorda gli orecchi, i suoi occhi sono fissi sul modello di un oggetto, dedica il suo cuore a finire il lavoro e sta sveglio per rifinirlo alla perfezione.
29 The blacksmith, sitting by his anvil and considering a work of iron, is similar. The steam from the fire singes his flesh, and he struggles against the heat of the furnace.	29 Così il vasaio che è seduto al suo lavoro e con i suoi piedi gira la ruota, è sempre in ansia per il suo lavoro, si affatica a produrre in gran quantità.
30 The voice of the hammer is ever in his ears, and his eye is upon the pattern of the ironwork.	30 Con il braccio imprime una forma all’argilla, mentre con i piedi ne piega la resistenza; dedica il suo cuore a una verniciatura perfetta e sta sveglio per pulire la fornace.
31 He gives his heart to the completion of his work, and his vigilance adorns it to perfection.	31 Tutti costoro confidano nelle proprie mani, e ognuno è abile nel proprio mestiere.
32 The potter, sitting at his work and turning the wheel with his feet, is similar. He has settled into a continual concern for his work, and there is a rhythm in all that he does.	32 Senza di loro non si costruisce una città, nessuno potrebbe soggiornarvi o circolarvi. Ma essi non sono ricercati per il consiglio del popolo,
33 He forms the clay with his arm, and he bends his strength over his feet.	33 nell’assemblea non hanno un posto speciale, non siedono sul seggio del giudice e non conoscono le disposizioni della legge. Non fanno brillare né l’istruzione né il diritto, non compaiono tra gli autori di proverbi,
34 He will give his heart over to the completion of the glazing, and his vigilance to the cleansing of the furnace.	34 ma essi consolidano la costruzione del mondo, e il mestiere che fanno è la loro preghiera. Differente è il caso di chi si applica a meditare la legge dell’Altissimo.
35 All these persons trust in their own hands, and each one is wise in his own art.
36 Without these persons, a city is not built.
37 But they will neither inhabit nor walk around in the city. And they will not go across to the church.
38 They will not sit upon the seats of judges, and they will not understand a decree of judgment. And they will not make clear discipline and judgment, and they will not be found to understand parables.
39 But they will strengthen the state of the world, and their prayer will be in their artistic works, applying their soul, and searching the law of the Most High.
