Proverbs 29

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The man who, with a stiff neck, treats the one who corrects him with contempt will be suddenly overwhelmed to his own destruction, and reason shall not follow him.1 The man who remains stiff-necked and hates rebuke will be crushed suddenly beyond cure.
When just men are multiplied, the common people shall rejoice. When the impious take up the leadership, the people shall mourn.2 When the just prevail, the people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, the people groan.
The man who loves wisdom rejoices his father. But whoever nurtures promiscuous women will lose his substance.3 He who loves wisdom makes his father glad, but he who consorts with harlots squanders his wealth.
A just king guides the land. A man of avarice will destroy it.4 By justice a king gives stability to the land; but he who imposes heavy taxes ruins it.
A man who speaks to his friend with flattering and feigned words spreads a net for his own feet.5 The man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net under his feet.
A snare will entangle the iniquitous when he sins. And the just shall praise and be glad.6 The wicked man steps into a snare, but the just man runs on joyfully.
The just knows the case of the poor. The impious is ignorant of knowledge.7 The just man has a care for the rights of the poor; the wicked man has no such concern.
Pestilent men squander a city. Yet truly, the wise avert fury.8 Arrogant men set the city ablaze, but wise men calm the fury.
A wise man, if he were to contend with the foolish, whether in anger or in laughter, would find no rest.9 If a wise man disputes with a fool, he may rage or laugh but can have no peace.
Bloodthirsty men hate the simple one; but the just seek out his soul.10 Bloodthirsty men hate the honest man, but the upright show concern for his life.
A foolish one offers everything on his mind. A wise one reserves and defers until later.11 The fool gives vent to all his anger; but by biding his time, the wise man calms it.
A leader who freely listens to lying words has only impious servants.12 If a ruler listens to lying words, his servants all become wicked.
The pauper and the creditor have met one another. The Lord is the illuminator of them both.13 The poor and the oppressor have a common bond: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
The king who judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be secured in eternity.14 If a king is zealous for the rights of the poor, his throne stands firm forever.
The rod and its correction distribute wisdom. But the child who is left to his own will brings shame to his mother.15 The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a boy left to his whims disgraces his mother.
When the impious are multiplied, crimes will be multiplied. But the just shall see their ruin.16 When the wicked prevail, crime increases; but their downfall the just will behold.
Teach your son, and he will refresh you, and he will give delight to your soul.17 Correct your son, and he will bring you comfort, and give delight to your soul.
When prophecy fails, the people will be scattered. Yet truly, whoever guards the law is blessed.18 Without prophecy the people become demoralized; but happy is he who keeps the law.
A servant cannot be taught by words, because he understands what you say, but he disdains to respond.19 By words no servant can be trained; for he understands what is said, but obeys not.
Have you seen a man rushing to speak? Foolishness has more hope than his correction.20 Do you see a man hasty in his words? More can be hoped for from a fool!
Whoever nurtures his servant delicately from childhood, afterwards will find him defiant.21 If a man pampers his servant from childhood, he will turn out to be stubborn.
A short-tempered man provokes quarrels. And whoever is easily angered is more likely to sin.22 An ill-tempered man stirs up disputes, and a hotheaded man is the cause of many sins.
Humiliation follows the arrogant. And glory shall uphold the humble in spirit.23 Man's pride causes his humiliation, but he who is humble of spirit obtains honor.
Whoever participates with a thief hates his own soul; for he listens to his oath and does not denounce him.24 The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy: he hears himself put under a curse, yet discloses nothing.
Whoever fears man will quickly fall. Whoever hopes in the Lord shall be lifted up.25 The fear of man brings a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD is safe.
Many demand the face of the leader. But the judgment of each one proceeds from the Lord.26 Many curry favor with the ruler, but the rights of each are from the LORD.
The just abhor an impious man. And the impious abhor those who are on the right way. By keeping the word, the son shall be free from perdition.27 The evildoer is an abomination to the just, and he who walks uprightly is an abomination to the wicked.
