1 But Eliphaz the Themanite, answering, said:	1 Elifaz il Temanita prese la parola e disse:
2 If we start to speak to you, perhaps you will take it badly, but who can hold back the words he has conceived?	2 Se si tenta di parlarti, ti sarà forse gravoso? Ma chi può trattenere il discorso?
3 Behold, you have taught many, and you have strengthened weary hands.	3 Ecco, tu hai istruito molti e a mani fiacche hai ridato vigore;
4 Your words have reassured the wavering, and you have fortified the trembling knees.	4 le tue parole hanno sorretto chi vacillava e le ginocchia che si piegavano hai rafforzato.
5 But now the scourge has overcome you, and you falter. It has touched you, and you are disturbed.	5 Ma ora questo accade a te e ti abbatti; capita a te e ne sei sconvolto.
6 Where is your reverence, your fortitude, your patience, and the perfection of your ways?	6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia e la tua condotta integra, la tua speranza?
7 Consider this, I beg you: who ever perished being innocent? Or when have the righteous been destroyed?	7 Ricordalo: quale innocente è mai perito e quando mai furon distrutti gli uomini retti?
8 In fact, I have instead seen those who work iniquity and who sow resentments, reap them,	8 Per quanto io ho visto, chi coltiva iniquità, chi semina affanni, li raccoglie.
9 perishing by the breath of God, and being consumed by the wrath of his spirit.	9 A un soffio di Dio periscono e dallo sfogo della sua ira sono annientati.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of young lions have been worn away.	10 Il ruggito del leone e l'urlo del leopardo e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.
11 The tiger has perished because it does not have prey, and the young lions have been scattered.	11 Il leone è perito per mancanza di preda e i figli della leonessa sono stati dispersi.
12 Furthermore, a word was spoken to me in secret, and, as if by theft, my ears received the pulse of its whisper.	12 A me fu recata, furtiva, una parola e il mio orecchio ne percepì il lieve sussurro.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when men are accustomed to be overtaken by a deep sleep,	13 Nei fantasmi, tra visioni notturne, quando grava sugli uomini il sonno,
14 fear and trembling seized me and all my bones were terrified.	14 terrore mi prese e spavento e tutte le ossa mi fece tremare;
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair on my body stood up.	15 un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e il pelo si drizzò sulla mia carne...
16 There appeared an image before my eyes, someone whose face I did not recognize, and I heard a voice like a gentle breeze.	16 Stava là ritto uno, di cui non riconobbi l'aspetto, un fantasma stava davanti ai miei occhi... Un sussurro..., e una voce mi si fece sentire:
17 Should man be justified in relation to God, or will a man be more pure than his Maker?	17 "Può il mortale essere giusto davanti a Dio o innocente l'uomo davanti al suo creatore?
18 Behold, those who serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he finds imperfection.	18 Ecco, dei suoi servi egli non si fida e ai suoi angeli imputa difetti;
19 How much more will those who live in houses of clay, which have an earthly foundation, be consumed like the moth?	19 quanto più a chi abita case di fango, che nella polvere hanno il loro fondamento! Come tarlo sono schiacciati,
20 From morning all the way to evening, they will be cut down, and because no one understands, they will be destroyed without ceasing.	20 annientati fra il mattino e la sera: senza che nessuno ci badi, periscono per sempre.
21 But those who are left behind will be taken away from them; they will die, and not in wisdom.	21 La funicella della loro tenda non viene forse strappata? Muoiono senza saggezza!".
