CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
Then Eliphaz the Themanite responded by saying:1 Elifaz de Temán replicó, diciendo:
Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?2 ¿Puede un hombre ser útil a Dios? Incluso el más capaz, ¿le es útil en algo?
What advantage is it to God, if you were just? Or what do you provide for him, if your way should be immaculate?3 ¿Le importa al Todopoderoso que tú seas justo? ¿Obtiene una ganancia si tu conducta es perfecta?
Will he reprove you and take you to judgment for being afraid,4 ¿Es por tu piedad que te reprueba y entabla un juicio contigo?
and not because of your many evil deeds and your infinite unfairness?5 ¿No es más bien por tu enorme maldad y porque tus faltas no tienen límite?
For you have taken away the collateral of your brothers without cause, and stripped them naked of their clothing.6 Tú exigías sin motivo prendas a tus hermanos y despojabas de su ropa a los desnudos.
You have not given water to the weary; you have taken bread away from the hungry.7 No dabas de beber al extenuado y negabas el pan al hambriento.
By the strength of your arm, you took possession of the land, and you retain it by being the strongest.8 «¡El país pertenece al de brazo fuerte; el privilegiado se instala en él!».
You have sent widows away empty, and you have crushed the shoulders of orphans.9 Despedías a las viudas con las manos vacías y quebraban los brazos de los huérfanos.
Because of this, you are surrounded by traps, and unexpected fears will disturb you.10 Por eso ahora estás rodeado de lazos y te estremece un terror repentino.
And did you think that you would not see darkness and that you were not to be overwhelmed by the on-rush of overflowing waters?11 Se oscureció la luz, y no ves; te sumergen las aguas desbordadas.
Have you not considered that God is higher than the heavens and is lifted above the height of the stars?12 ¿No está Dios en la cima del cielo? ¡Mira qué alta es la bóveda estrellada!
And you say: “Well, what does God know?” and, “He judges, as if through a fog,”13 Por eso dijiste: «¿Qué sabe Dios? ¿Puede juzgar a través de los nubarrones?
and, “The clouds are his hiding-place,” and, “He does not examine us closely,” and, “He makes his rounds at the limits of the heavens.”14 Las nubes lo tapan, no puede ver; él se pasea por los bordes del cielo».
Do you not want to tend the path of the ages, which wicked men have spurned?15 ¿Quieres seguir por el camino antiguo que recorrieron los hombres perversos?
These were taken away before their time, and a flood overthrew their foundation.16 Ellos fueron arrebatados antes de tiempo, cuando un río inundó sus cimientos.
They said to God, “Withdraw from us,” and they treated the Almighty as if he could do nothing,17 Decían a Dios: «¡Apártate de nosotros! ¿Qué puede hacernos el Todopoderoso?».
though he had filled their houses with good things. May their way of thinking be far from me.18 Y aunque él llenaba sus casas de bienes, el designio de los malvados seguía lejos de él.
The just will see and will rejoice, and the innocent will mock them.19 Los justos lo ven y se alegran, el inocente se burla de ellos:
Has not their haughtiness been cut down, and has not fire devoured the remnants of them?20 «¿No ha sido aniquilada su fortuna y el fuego devoró hasta sus residuos?».
So, repose yourself with him and be at peace, and, in this way, you will have the best fruits.21 Llega a un acuerdo con Dios, reconcíliate, y así alcanzarás la felicidad.
Accept the law from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.22 Recibe la instrucción de sus labios y guarda sus palabras en tu corazón.
If you will return to the Almighty, you will be rebuilt, and you will put sinfulness far from your tabernacle.23 Si vuelves al Todopoderoso con humildad y alejas de tu carpa la injusticia;
He will give you stone in place of dirt, and torrents of gold in place of stone.24 si arrojas el oro en el polvo y el oro de Ofir entre las piedras del torrente,
And the Almighty will be against your enemies, and silver will be gathered together for you.25 entonces el Todopoderoso será tu oro, él será un montón de plata para ti.
Then will you flock together in delight over the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.26 En el Todopoderoso estará tu deleite y levantarás tu rostro hacia Dios.
You will plead with him, and he will listen to you, and you will pay your vows.27 Tú le suplicarás y él te escuchará, y podrás cumplir tus votos.
You will decide on something, and it will come to you, and the light will shine in your ways.28 Si te propones algo, te saldrá bien, y sobre tus senderos brillará la luz.
For he who had been humbled, will be in glory; and he who will lower his eyes, will be the one saved.29 Porque él humilla la altivez del soberbio pero salva al que baja los ojos.
The innocent will be saved, and he will be saved with purity in his hands.30 El libra al hombre inocente, y tú te librarás por la pureza de tus manos.
