1 Die Philister kämpften inzwischen gegen Israel, und die Israeliten mußten vor den Philistern fliehen. Erschlagene lagen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.	1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2 Die Philister verfolgten Saul und seine Söhne hartnäckig und erschlugen Jonatan, Abinadab und Malkischua, die Söhne Sauls.	2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 Auch um Saul herum entbrannte der Kampf mit aller Heftigkeit. Die Bogenschützen erreichten ihn, und er wurde von ihnen schwer verwundet.	3 The battle pressed hard upon Saul, and the archers found him; and he was badly wounded by the archers.
4 Saul sprach zu seinem Waffenträger: "Zücke dein Schwert und durchbohre mich, damit nicht jene Unbeschnittenen kommen, mich erstechen und mit mir ihren Spott treiben!" Aber sein Waffenträger wollte nicht, da er sich zu sehr fürchtete. Da nahm Saul selbst sein Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.	4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer would not; for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword, and fell upon it.
5 Als der Waffenträger sah, daß Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb mit ihm zusammen.	5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword, and died with him.
6 So fanden Saul, seine drei Söhne, sein Waffenträger und alle seine Männer an jenem Tage gemeinsam den Tod.	6 Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.
7 Die Israeliten jenseits der Ebene und jenseits des Jordans erfuhren, daß die israelitischen Truppen geflohen waren und Saul samt seinen Söhnen den Tod gefunden hatte. Sie verließen daher ihre Städte und flüchteten, und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin.	7 And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 Am folgenden Tage erschienen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, und sie fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne, die auf dem Gebirge Gilboa gefallen waren.	8 On the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9 Sie hieben ihm den Kopf ab, zogen ihm seine Rüstung aus und sandten im Philisterlande ringsum Boten, die in ihren Götzentempeln und dem Volk die Freudennachricht verkünden sollten.	9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.
10 Seine Rüstung legten sie im Tempel der Göttin Astarte nieder, seinen Leichnam aber hängten sie an der Mauer von Bet-Schean auf.	10 They put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11 Die Bewohner von Jabesch in Gilead erfuhren, was die Philister Saul angetan hatten.	11 But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 Alle kampfesfähigen Männer machten sich nun auf den Weg und gingen die ganze Nacht hindurch. Sie nahmen die Leichen Sauls und seiner Söhne von der Mauer Bet-Scheans herab, brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie dort.	12 all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan; and they came to Jabesh and burnt them there.
13 Dann nahmen sie ihre Gebeine, beerdigten sie unter der Tamariske zu Jabesch und fasteten sieben Tage lang.	13 And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
