1 Agrippa sagte zu Paulus: "Es ist dir gestattet, in deiner Sache zu reden." Da streckte Paulus die Hand aus und begann seine Verteidigung:	1 Then Agrippa said to Paul: Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretching forth his hand, began to make his answer.
2 "Ich schätze mich glücklich, König Agrippa, daß ich mich heute vor dir wegen all der von den Juden gegen mich erhobenen Anklagen verteidigen darf;	2 I think myself happy, O king Agrippa, that I am to answer for myself this day before thee, touching all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews.
3 du bist ja ein vorzüglicher Kenner aller bei den Juden sich findenden Bräuche und Streitfragen. Ich bitte dich daher, mit Geduld mich anzuhören.	3 Especially as thou knowest all, both customs and questions that are among the Jews: Wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.
4 Von meinem Lebenswandel, den ich seit meiner Jugend von Anfang an unter meinem Volk, und zwar in Jerusalem, führte, wissen alle Juden,	4 And my life indeed from my youth, which was from the beginning among my own nation in Jerusalem, all the Jews do know:
5 die mich seit jeher kennen - und es bezeugen wollen -, daß ich als Pharisäer nach der strengsten Richtung unserer Religion gelebt habe.	5 Having known me from the beginning (if they will give testimony) that according to the most sure sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.
6 Nun stehe ich vor Gericht wegen der Hoffnung auf die von Gott an unsere Väter ergangene Verheißung,	6 And now for the hope of the promise that was made by God to the fathers, do I stand subject to judgment:
7 zu der unser Zwölfstämmevolk zu gelangen hofft, wenn es unablässig Tag und Nacht Gott dient. Dieser Hoffnung wegen, o König, werde ich von den Juden angeklagt.	7 Unto which, our twelve tribes, serving night and day, hope to come. For which hope, O king, I am accused by the Jews.
8 Warum gilt es bei euch für unglaublich, daß Gott Tote erweckt?	8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible, that God should raise the dead?
9 Zwar hatte ich mir eingebildet, ich müßte gegen den Namen Jesu, des Nazoräers, viel Feindseliges unternehmen.	9 And I indeed did formerly think, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 Das tat ich denn auch in Jerusalem und habe viele der Heiligen in Gefängnisse geworfen, wozu ich von den Hohenpriestern Vollmacht erhalten hatte, und wenn sie hingerichtet wurden, stimmte ich zu.	10 Which also I did at Jerusalem, and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority of the chief priests: and when they were put to death, I brought the sentence.
11 In allen Synagogen suchte ich sie gar oft unter Strafen zum Lästern zu zwingen, und in meiner maßlosen Wut verfolgte ich sie bis in die auswärtigen Städte.	11 And oftentimes punishing them, in every synagogue, I compelled them to blaspheme: and being yet more mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities.
12 Als ich aber dabei mit Vollmacht und im Auftrag der Hohenpriester nach Damaskus zog,	12 Whereupon when I was going to Damascus with authority and permission of the chief priest,
13 sah ich unterwegs, mitten am Tag, o König, vom Himmel her ein Licht, heller als der Sonne Glanz, das mich und meine Gefährten umstrahlte.	13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me, and them that were in company with me.
14 Indes wir alle zu Boden fielen, hörte ich eine Stimme in hebräischer Sprache zu mir sagen: "Saul, Saul, warum verfolgst du mich? Es ist hart für dich, gegen den Stachel auszuschlagen."	14 And when we were all fallen down on the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me in the Hebrew tongue: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the goad.
15 Ich aber entgegnete: "Wer bist du, Herr?" Der Herr antwortete: "Ich bin Jesus, den du verfolgst.	15 And I said: Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord answered: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
16 Doch steh auf und stelle dich auf deine Füße; denn dazu bin ich dir erschienen, daß ich dich bestelle zum Diener und zum Zeugen dessen, was du an mir geschaut hast, und dessen, worin ich mich dir zeigen werde;	16 But rise up, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared to thee, that I may make thee a minister, and a witness of those things which thou hast seen, and of those things wherein I will appear to thee,
17 bewahren werde ich dich vor dem Volk und vor den Heiden, zu denen ich dich sende;	17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the nations, unto which now I send thee:
18 du sollst ihnen die Augen öffnen, damit sie sich bekehren von der Finsternis zum Licht und von der Gewalt des Satans zu Gott, damit sie Vergebung der Sünden erlangen und Anteil unter den Heiligen durch den Glauben an mich."	18 To open their eyes, that they may be converted from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and a lot among the saints, by the faith that is in me.
19 Daraufhin, König Agrippa, verhielt ich mich nicht abweisend gegenüber der himmlischen Erscheinung,	19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not incredulous to the heavenly vision:
20 sondern predigte zuerst denen in Damaskus, dann auch in Jerusalem und im ganzen Land der Juden und unter den Heidenvölkern, sie sollten sich bekehren und hinwenden zu Gott und der Bekehrung entsprechende Werke verrichten.	20 But to them first that are at Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and unto all the country of Judea, and to the Gentiles did I preach, that they should do penance, and turn to God, doing works worthy of penance.
21 Um dieser Dinge willen ergriffen mich die Juden im Tempel und versuchten, mich zu töten.	21 For this cause the Jews, when I was in the temple, having apprehended me, went about to kill me.
22 Aber durch Gottes Hilfe, die ich erfuhr, stehe ich bis zum heutigen Tag und gebe Zeugnis vor klein und groß; ich behaupte nichts anderes, als was die Propheten und auch Moses als Geschehen der Zukunft verkündet haben,	22 But being aided by the help of God, I stand unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other thing than those which the prophets, and Moses did say should come to pass:
23 daß nämlich der Messias dem Leiden unterworfen sei, aber als erster aus der Auferstehung der Toten ein Licht verkünden werde dem Volk und den Heiden."	23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light to the people, and to the Gentiles.
24 Als er sich so verteidigte, rief Festus mit lauter Stimme: "Du bist von Sinnen, Paulus! Das viele Studieren bringt dich um den Verstand!"	24 As he spoke these things, and made his answer, Festus said with a loud voice: Paul, thou art beside thyself: much learning doth make thee mad.
25 Paulus aber sagte: "Ich bin nicht von Sinnen, erlauchter Festus, sondern ich rede Worte der Wahrheit und Besonnenheit.	25 And Paul said: I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but I speak words of truth and soberness.
26 Es weiß ja der König, zu dem ich mit Freimut spreche, um diese Dinge; bin ich doch überzeugt, daß nichts davon ihm unbekannt blieb; es hat sich ja dies nicht in einem Winkel zugetragen.	26 For the king knoweth of these things, to whom also I speak with confidence. For I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him. For neither was any of these things done in a corner.
27 Glaubst du, König Agrippa, den Propheten? Ich weiß, du glaubst."	27 Believest thou the prophets, O king Agrippa? I know that thou believest.
28 Agrippa erwiderte Paulus: "In kurzem überredest du mich noch, mich als Christen zu erklären."	28 And Agrippa said to Paul: In a little thou persuadest me to become a Christian.
29 Paulus sagte: "Ich wollte vor Gott, daß über kurz oder lang nicht allein du, sondern auch alle, die heute mich hören, das würden, was ich bin, abgesehen von diesen Ketten."	29 And Paul said: I would to God, that both in a little and in much, not only thou, but also all that hear me, this day, should become such as I also am, except these bands.
30 Da erhoben sich der König und der Statthalter sowie Bernike und die mit anwesenden Gäste.	30 And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them.
31 Beim Hinausgehen sagten sie zueinander "Dieser Mann tut nichts, was Tod oder Fesseln verdient."	31 And when they were gone aside, they spoke among themselves, saying: This man hath done nothing worthy of death or of bands.
32 Agrippa aber sagte zu Festus: "Freilassen könnte man diesen Menschen, hätte er nicht Berufung eingelegt an den Kaiser."	32 And Agrippa said to Festus: This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed to Caesar.
