1 Nach diesen Worten ging Jesus mit seinen Jüngern hinaus, über den Bach Kedron hinüber, wo ein Garten war, in den er und seine Jünger eintraten.	1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the Kidron valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
2 Es wußte aber auch Judas, sein Verräter, den Ort, denn oft kam Jesus dort mit seinen Jüngern zusammen.	2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas nun nahm die Kohorte und Leute von den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern und begab sich mit Fackeln, Laternen und Waffen dorthin.	3 So Judas, procuring a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 Jesus, der alles wußte, was über ihn kommen sollte, trat heraus und fragte sie: "Wen sucht ihr?"	4 Then Jesus, knowing all that was to befall him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"
5 Sie antworteten ihm: "Jesus, den Nazoräer." Er sprach zu ihnen: "Ich bin es." Es stand auch Judas, sein Verräter, bei ihnen.	5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Als er nun zu ihnen sagte: "Ich bin es", da wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.	6 When he said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Abermals fragte er sie: "Wen sucht ihr?" Sie sagten: "Jesus, den Nazoräer."	7 Again he asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
8 Jesus antwortete: "Ich habe es euch gesagt, daß ich es bin; wenn ihr also mich sucht, so laßt diese hier gehen!"	8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he; so, if you seek me, let these men go."
9 So sollte sich erfüllen das Wort, das er gesagt hatte: "Von denen, die du mir gabst, ließ ich keinen verlorengehen."	9 This was to fulfill the word which he had spoken, "Of those whom thou gavest me I lost not one."
10 Simon Petrus aber, der ein Schwert hatte, zog es, schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Name des Knechtes war Malchus.	10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.
11 Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: "Stecke das Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch, den mir der Vater gegeben hat, nicht trinken?"	11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"
12 Die Kohorte, der Befehlshaber und die Leute der Juden ergriffen nun Jesus, fesselten ihn	12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him.
13 und führten ihn zuerst zu Annas; denn er war der Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, der Hoherpriester war in jenem Jahre.	13 First they led him to Annas; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Kaiphas war es, der den Juden den Rat gegeben hatte, es sei besser, daß ein einziger Mensch sterbe für das Volk.	14 It was Caiaphas who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 Simon Petrus aber und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus in den Hof des Hohenpriesters hinein;	15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus,
16 Petrus aber stand draußen am Tore. Es ging nun der andere Jünger, der Bekannte des Hohenpriesters, hinaus, redete mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein.	16 while Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
17 Da sagte die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petrus: "Bist nicht auch du einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen?" Er erwiderte: "Ich bin es nicht."	17 The maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are not you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."
18 Die Knechte und Diener hatten sich, weil es kalt war, ein Kohlenfeuer angemacht und standen herum und wärmten sich; auch Petrus stellte sich zu ihnen und wärmte sich.	18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves; Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Der Hohepriester befragte nun Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.	19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: "Ich habe öffentlich zur Welt geredet; ich habe zu jeder Zeit in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet.	20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly.
21 Was fragst du mich? Frage jene, die gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen redete; siehe, die wissen, was ich sagte."	21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said."
22 Als er dies sagte, schlug einer von den Dienern, der dabeistand, Jesus ins Gesicht und sagte: "So antwortest du dem Hohenpriester?"	22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"
23 Jesus entgegnete ihm: "Habe ich unrecht geredet, so bezeuge das Unrecht; wenn aber recht, was schlägst du mich?"	23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"
24 Annas nun schickte ihn gefesselt zum Hohenpriester Kaiphas.	24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Da sagten sie zu ihm: "Bist nicht auch du einer von seinen Jüngern?" Er leugnete und sprach: "Ich bin es nicht."	25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "Are not you also one of his disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not."
26 Einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgeschlagen hatte, sagte zu ihm: "Sah ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm?"	26 One of the servants of the high priest, a kinsman of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
27 Petrus leugnete wiederum, und sogleich krähte der Hahn.	27 Peter again denied it; and at once the cock crowed.
28 Sie führten nun Jesus von Kaiphas in das Prätorium. Es war frühmorgens. Sie selber gingen nicht in das Prätorium hinein, damit sie sich nicht verunreinigten, sondern das Pascha essen könnten.	28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not enter the praetorium, so that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.
29 Da kam Pilatus zu ihnen heraus und sprach: "Welche Anklage bringt ihr vor gegen diesen Menschen?"	29 So Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"
30 Sie antworteten und sagten zu ihm: "Wäre dieser nicht ein Verbrecher, hätten wir ihn dir nicht überliefert."	30 They answered him, "If this man were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over."
31 Pilatus nun sagte zu ihnen: "Nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz!" Die Juden aber erwiderten ihm: "Uns ist es nicht erlaubt, jemand zu töten."	31 Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put any man to death."
32 So sollte das Wort Jesu erfüllt werden, das er gesagt hatte, um anzudeuten, welchen Todes er sterben werde.	32 This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show by what death he was to die.
33 Pilatus ging wieder in das Prätorium hinein, rief Jesus und sagte zu ihm: "Du bist der König der Juden?"	33 Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
34 Jesus antwortete: "Sagst du das aus dir selbst, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt?"	34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?"
35 Pilatus erwiderte: "Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überliefert; was hast du getan?"	35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?"
36 Jesus antwortete: "Mein Königtum ist nicht von dieser Welt. Wäre mein Königtum von dieser Welt, hätten meine Leute gekämpft, daß ich den Juden nicht ausgeliefert würde. Nun aber ist mein Königtum nicht von hier."	36 Jesus answered, "My kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world."
37 Da sagte Pilatus zu ihm: "Du bist also doch ein König?" Jesus antwortete: "Du sagst es, ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, daß ich Zeugnis gebe für die Wahrheit. Jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört auf meine Stimme."	37 Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice."
38 Pilatus sagte zu ihm: "Was ist Wahrheit?" Nach diesen Worten ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden und sprach zu ihnen: "Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm.	38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again, and told them, "I find no crime in him.
39 Es besteht aber die Sitte für euch, daß ich euch zum Pascha einen freigebe. Wollt ihr, daß ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?"	39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; will you have me release for you the King of the Jews?"
40 Sie aber schrien zurück: "Nicht diesen, sondern den Barabbas!" Barabbas aber war ein Rebell.	40 They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
