17 Insgesamt also sind an Geschlechtern: von Abraham bis David vierzehn Geschlechter, von David bis zur Wegführung nach Babylon vierzehn Geschlechter und von der Wegführung nach Babylon bis Christus vierzehn Geschlechter.	17 The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to theBabylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.
18 Mit der Herkunft Jesu Christi verhielt es sich aber so: Als Maria, seine Mutter, mit Joseph verlobt war, fand es sich, ehe sie zusammenkamen, daß sie empfangen hatte von Heiligem Geist.	18 This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before theycame to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19 Joseph, ihr Mann, der gerecht war und sie nicht bloßstellen wollte, gedachte, sie heimlich zu entlassen.	19 Her husband Joseph, being an upright man and wanting to spare her disgrace, decided to divorce herinformal y.
20 Als er darüber nachdachte, siehe, da erschien ihm ein Engel des Herrn im Traum und sprach: "Joseph, Sohn Davids, fürchte dich nicht, Maria, deine Frau, zu dir zu nehmen; denn was gezeugt ist in ihr, stammt von Heiligem Geist.	20 He had made up his mind to do this when suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dreamand said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceivedwhat is in her by the Holy Spirit.
21 Sie wird einen Sohn gebären, dem sollst du den Namen Jesus geben; denn er wird sein Volk erlösen von seinen Sünden."	21 She wil give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save hispeople from their sins.'
22 Dies alles ist geschehen, damit erfüllt würde, was gesagt ist vom Herrn durch den Propheten:	22 Now al this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet:
23 "Siehe, die Jungfrau wird empfangen und einen Sohn gebären, und man wird ihn Emmanuel nennen", was übersetzt heißt: "Gott mit uns" (Is 7,14).	23 Look! the virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they wil cal Immanuel, a name whichmeans 'God-is-with-us'.
24 Joseph stand auf vom Schlaf, tat, wie ihm der Engel des Herrn befohlen hatte, und nahm seine Frau zu sich.	24 When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to hishome;
25 Und er erkannte sie nicht, bis sie einen Sohn gebar, und er gab ihm den Namen Jesus.	25 he had not had intercourse with her when she gave birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.
