1 Der Satan trat wider Israel auf und reizte David an, Israel zu zählen.	1 Satan stood up against Israel, and incited David to number Israel.
2 So befahl David Joab und den Führern des Volkes: "Geht hin und zählt Israel von Beerseba bis Dan und bringt mir Bescheid, damit ich ihre Zahl erfahre!"	2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, "Go, number Israel, from Beer-sheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number."
3 Joab entgegnete: "Möchte doch der Herr sein Volk, so wie es ist, um das Hundertfache vergrößern! Sind denn, mein Gebieter und König, nicht alle Knechte meines Herrn? Warum fordert mein Gebieter so etwas? Warum soll es Israel zu einer Schuld werden?"	3 But Joab said, "May the LORD add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord's servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should he bring guilt upon Israel?"
4 Doch der Befehl des Königs nötigte Joab. So mußte Joab fortgehen, ganz Israel durchziehen und schließlich nach Jerusalem zurückkommen.	4 But the king's word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came back to Jerusalem.
5 Das Ergebnis der Volkszählung händigte Joab an David aus: Gesamtisrael besaß 1 100 000 Mann, die das Schwert führen konnten, und Juda 470 000 Schwertträger.	5 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand who drew the sword.
6 Levi und Benjamin hatte er dabei nicht mitgezählt; denn des Königs Anordnung war dem Joab ein Greuel.	6 But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab.
7 Da Gott die Sache mißfiel, schlug er Israel.	7 But God was displeased with this thing, and he smote Israel.
8 Nun betete David zu Gott: "Ich habe schwer gesündigt, weil ich dieses tat. So nimm doch die Schuld deines Knechtes hinweg; denn überaus töricht habe ich gehandelt."	8 And David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, I pray thee, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly."
9 Der Herr sprach zu Gad, dem Seher Davids:	9 And the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying,
10 "Geh hin und sage David: So spricht der Herr: Dreierlei lege ich dir vor; wähle dir eines davon aus, daß ich es dir antue!"	10 "Go and say to David, 'Thus says the LORD, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.'"
11 Gad kam zu David und sagte zu ihm: "So spricht der Herr: Entscheide dich:	11 So Gad came to David and said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Take which you will:
12 Soll drei Jahre lang Hungersnot sein, oder willst du drei Monate lang vor deinen Feinden fliehen, so daß das Schwert deiner Gegner dich erreicht, oder soll drei Tage lang das Schwert des Herrn, die Pest, im Lande wüten und der Engel des Herrn in allen Gebieten Israels Verheerung anrichten? Nun sieh zu, welche Antwort ich dem bringen soll, der mich sendet!"	12 either three years of famine; or three months of devastation by your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of the LORD, pestilence upon the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.' Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me."
13 David entgegnete Gad: "Ich bin in großer Bedrängnis. Doch will ich lieber in die Hand des Herrn fallen, denn sein Erbarmen ist überaus groß; aber in die Hand von Menschen möchte ich nicht fallen!"	13 Then David said to Gad, "I am in great distress; let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but let me not fall into the hand of man."
14 Der Herr ließ nun in Israel die Pest ausbrechen, und es starben von Israel siebzigtausend Mann.	14 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel; and there fell seventy thousand men of Israel.
15 Gott hatte einen Engel nach Jerusalem entsandt. um die Stadt zu verheeren. Als dieser die Vernichtung vollzog, sah es der Herr, und es reute ihn das Unheil. Er befahl dem Engel, der die Verheerung anrichtete: "Jetzt ist es genug, ziehe deine Hand zurück!" Der Engel des Herrn stand gerade bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan.	15 And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; but when he was about to destroy it, the LORD saw, and he repented of the evil; and he said to the destroying angel, "It is enough; now stay your hand." And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 David erhob seine Augen und sah den Engel des Herrn zwischen Erde und Himmel stehen mit gezücktem Schwert in der Hand, das gegen Jerusalem ausgestreckt war. David und die Ältesten fielen auf ihr Angesicht nieder, in Trauerkleider gehüllt.	16 And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17 David aber rief zu Gott: "Ich war es ja doch, der den Befehl gab, das Volk aufzuzeichnen. Ich habe gesündigt, ich, der Hirte, habe Böses getan. Diese aber, die Herde, was haben sie verbrochen? Herr, mein Gott, deine Hand erhebe sich doch wider mich und meine Familie, aber nicht gegen dein Volk zum Schlage!"	17 And David said to God, "Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father's house; but let not the plague be upon thy people."
18 Der Engel des Herrn befahl Gad, David zu sagen, er solle hinaufgehen und auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan einen Altar erbauen.	18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and rear an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 David ging hinauf nach dem Worte Gads, das dieser im Namen des Herrn gesprochen hatte.	19 So David went up at Gad's word, which he had spoken in the name of the LORD.
20 Als Ornan sich umwandte, sah er den Engel, während seine vier Söhne, die sich bei ihm befanden, verdeckt waren. Ornan war gerade beim Weizendreschen.	20 Now Ornan was threshing wheat; he turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves.
21 David kam zu Ornan. Dieser blickte auf, sah ihn, trat aus der Tenne heraus und verneigte sich vor David mit dem Angesicht zur Erde.	21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went forth from the threshing floor, and did obeisance to David with his face to the ground.
22 David sagte zu Ornan: "Gib mir den Tennisplatz! Ich will darauf einen Altar für den Herrn bauen. Um den vollen Preis sollst du ihn mir lassen, damit die Plage vom Volk abgewendet werde."	22 And David said to Ornan, "Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the LORD--give it to me at its full price--that the plague may be averted from the people."
23 Ornan antwortete David: "Nimm ihn! Mein Herr und König tue, was ihm beliebt! Ich gebe dir die Rinder für die Brandopfer, die Dreschbretter als Opferholz und den Weizen zum Speiseopfer. Dies alles spende ich."	23 Then Ornan said to David, "Take it; and let my lord the king do what seems good to him; see, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for a cereal offering. I give it all."
24 Doch der König David entgegnete Ornan: "Nein, um den vollen Kaufpreis will ich alles erwerben; denn ich kann nicht dein Eigentum für den Herrn hernehmen und ein geschenktes Brandopfer darbringen."	24 But King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will buy it for the full price; I will not take for the LORD what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings which cost me nothing."
25 So bezahlte denn David dem Ornan für den Platz sechshundert abgewogene Goldsekel.	25 So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.
26 David erbaute dem Herrn dort einen Altar, brachte Brand- und Friedopfer dar und rief zum Herrn. Dieser antwortete ihm mit Feuer, das vom Himmel auf den Brandopferaltar herniederfiel.	26 And David built there an altar to the LORD and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD, and he answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.
27 Der Herr erteilte dem Engel den Befehl, sein Schwert wieder in die Scheide zu stecken.	27 Then the LORD commanded the angel; and he put his sword back into its sheath.
28 Zu jener Zeit, als David sah, daß ihn der Herr auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan erhörte, brachte er dort sein Opfer dar.	28 At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he made his sacrifices there.
29 Die Wohnstätte des Herrn, die Moses in der Wüste angefertigt hatte, und der Brandopferaltar waren zu jener Zeit auf der Höhe von Gibeon.	29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time in the high place at Gibeon;
30 Doch David konnte nicht mehr vor ihn hintreten, um Gott aufzusuchen; denn er war in Schrecken versetzt worden durch das Schwert des Engels des Herrn.	30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
