1 Jakob erfuhr, daß es in Ägypten Getreide gäbe. Er sprach zu seinen Söhnen: "Warum zögert ihr?"	1 When Jacob learned that grain rations were available in Egypt, he said to his sons: "Why do you keep gaping at one another?
2 Dann sagte er: "Seht, ich habe gehört, daß es in Ägypten noch Korn gibt. Zieht dorthin und kauft uns von dorther Getreide, damit wir am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben!"	2 I hear," he went on, "that rations of grain are available in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, that we may stay alive rather than die of hunger."
3 Die Brüder Josephs zogen (es waren ihrer zehn) fort, um von Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen.	3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy an emergency supply of grain from Egypt.
4 Josephs Bruder Benjamin aber schickte Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern; denn er dachte, es könnte ihm etwa ein Unfall zustoßen.	4 It was only Joseph's full brother Benjamin that Jacob did not send with the rest, for he thought some disaster might befall him.
5 Die Söhne Israels kamen also mitten unter allen anderen zum Getreidekauf; denn der Hunger wütete im Lande Kanaan.	5 Thus, since there was famine in the land of Canaan also, the sons of Israel were among those who came to procure rations.
6 Joseph war der Gebieter über das Land. Er verkaufte allen Bewohnern des Landes Getreide. Die Brüder Josephs kamen und warfen sich mit dem Angesicht vor ihm zur Erde nieder.	6 It was Joseph, as governor of the country, who dispensed the rations to all the people. When Joseph's brothers came and knelt down before him with their faces to the ground,
7 Joseph erblickte seine Brüder, und er erkannte sie. Er stellte sich aber fremd gegen sie und redete gar streng mit ihnen. Er sprach zu ihnen: "Woher seid ihr gekommen?" Sie antworteten: "Vom Lande Kanaan, um Nahrung zu kaufen."	7 he recognized them as soon as he saw them. But he concealed his own identity from them and spoke sternly to them. "Where do you come from?" he asked them. They answered, "From the land of Canaan, to procure food."
8 Joseph erkannte seine Brüder, sie aber erkannten ihn nicht.	8 When Joseph recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him,
9 Da erinnerte sich Joseph an die Träume, die er von ihnen gehabt hatte. Er sprach zu ihnen: "Kundschafter seid ihr! Die Blöße des Landes auszuspähen seid ihr gekommen!"	9 he was reminded of the dreams he had about them. He said to them: "You are spies. You have come to see the nakedness of the land."
10 Sie antworteten ihm: "Nicht doch, mein Herr! Deine Knechte kamen, um Nahrung zu kaufen.	10 "No, my lord," they replied. "On the contrary, your servants have come to procure food.
11 Alle miteinander sind wir Söhne eines einzigen Mannes; ehrliche Leute sind wir, deine Knechte sind keine Kundschafter."	11 All of us are sons of the same man. We are honest men; your servants have never been spies."
12 Ersagte zu ihnen: "Nein, ihr seid gekommen, die Blöße des Landes auszuspähen."	12 But he answered them: "Not so! You have come to see the nakedness of the land."
13 Sie antworteten: "Wir, deine Knechte, waren unser zwölf Brüder, Söhne eines einzigen Mannes in Kanaan. Der Jüngste ist jetzt bei unserem Vater, und der eine ist nicht mehr da."	13 "We your servants," they said, "were twelve brothers, sons of a certain man in Canaan; but the youngest one is at present with our father, and the other one is gone."
14 Joseph erwiderte ihnen: "So ist es, wie ich euch gesagt habe, Kundschafter seid ihr!	14 "It is just as I said," Joseph persisted; "you are spies.
15 Darin sollt ihr geprüft werden: Beim Leben des Pharao! Ihr dürft nicht von hier fort, wenn nicht euer jüngster Bruder hierher kommt.	15 This is how you shall be tested: unless your youngest brother comes here, I swear by the life of Pharaoh that you shall not leave here.
16 Schickt daher einen von euch, der soll euren Bruder holen; euch aber lasse ich fesseln. Es sollen eure Worte geprüft werden, ob es sich mit euch so verhält oder nicht! Beim Leben des Pharao! Ihr seid doch Kundschafter!"	16 So send one of your number to get your brother, while the rest of you stay here under arrest. Thus shall your words be tested for their truth; if they are untrue, as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!"
17 Er ließ sie drei Tage in Gewahrsam bringen.	17 With that, he locked them up in the guardhouse for three days.
18 Am dritten Tage sprach Joseph zu ihnen: "Tut dieses, und ihr bleibt am Leben! Denn ich bin gottesfürchtig!	18 On the third day Joseph said to them: "Do this, and you shall live; for I am a God-fearing man.
19 Wenn ihr wirklich ehrliche Leute seid, so soll einer von euch Brüdern in eurem Kerker als Gefangener dableiben; ihr anderen aber geht und schafft das Korn heim, um den Hunger in euren Familien zu stillen!	19 If you have been honest, only one of your brothers need be confined in this prison, while the rest of you may go and take home provisions for your starving families.
20 Euren jüngsten Bruder aber bringt her zu mir, damit sich eure Worte als wahr erweisen und ihr nicht sterben müßt!" Da stimmten sie zu.	20 But you must come back to me with your youngest brother. Your words will thus be verified, and you will not die." To this they agreed.
21 Dann sagten sie unter sich: "Wehe, schuldig sind wir an unserem Bruder geworden! Wir haben seine Herzensangst miterlebt, als er unser Erbarmen anflehte; wir aber achteten nicht darauf. Darum ist jetzt diese Drangsal über uns gekommen."	21 To one another, however, they said: "Alas, we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we paid no heed; that is why this anguish has now come upon us."
22 Ruben erklärte ihnen: "Habe ich es nicht zu euch gesagt: "Versündigt euch nicht an diesem Knaben!" Ihr aber wolltet nicht hören. Nun wird sein Blut gefordert!"	22 "Didn't I tell you," broke in Reuben, "not to do wrong to the boy? But you wouldn't listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood."
23 Sie aber merkten nicht, daß Joseph sie verstand. Denn es war ein Dolmetscher zwischen ihnen.	23 They did not know, of course, that Joseph understood what they said, since he spoke with them through an interpreter.
24 Er wandte sich von ihnen ab und weinte. Dann kam er wieder hinzu und redete mit ihnen. Er ließ von ihnen den Simeon festnehmen und vor ihren Augen fesseln.	24 But turning away from them, he wept. When he was able to speak to them again, he had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.
25 Dann gab Joseph den Befehl, die Behälter sollten mit Getreide gefüllt, das Geld eines jeden sollte in seinen Sack zurückgelegt und Reisevorrat ihnen mitgegeben werden. Das tat man ihnen.	25 Then Joseph gave orders to have their containers filled with grain, their money replaced in each one's sack, and provisions given them for their journey. After this had been done for them,
26 Sie aber luden ihr Korn auf ihre Esel und zogen von dannen.	26 they loaded their donkeys with the rations and departed.
27 Einer von ihnen öffnete seinen Sack, um seinem Esel in der Herberge Futter zu geben. Er erblickte sein Geld - es lag oben in seinem Kornsack.	27 At the night encampment, when one of them opened his bag to give his donkey some fodder, he was surprised to see his money in the mouth of his bag.
28 Er rief seinen Brüdern zu: "Zurückgetan ist mein Geld; hier in meinem Kornsack ist es!" Ihr Herz begann zu beben, und zitternd sprachen sie zueinander: "Was hat Gott uns da angetan?"	28 "My money has been returned!" he cried out to his brothers. "Here it is in my bag!" At that their hearts sank. Trembling, they asked one another, "What is this that God has done to us?"
29 Sie kamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob in das Land Kanaan und berichteten ihm alles, was sich mit ihnen zugetragen hatte. Sie sprachen:	29 When they got back to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them.
30 "Jener Mann, der Gebieter des Landes, hat mit uns gar hart geredet. Er hat uns für Kundschafter gehalten.	30 "The man who is lord of the country," they said, "spoke to us sternly and put us in custody as if we were spying on the land.
31 Wir haben ihm zwar gesagt: "Ehrliche Leute sind wir, wir sind keine Spione.	31 But we said to him: 'We are honest men; we have never been spies.
32 Zwölf Brüder waren wir, Söhne unseres Vaters. Einer ist nicht mehr, und der Jüngste ist jetzt bei unserem Vater im Lande Kanaan."	32 There were twelve of us brothers, sons of the same father; but one is gone, and the youngest one is at present with our father in the land of Canaan.'
33 Jener Mann aber, der Gebieter des Landes, sprach zu uns: "Daran will ich erkennen, daß ihr ehrliche Leute seid: einen von euch Brüdern laßt bei mir zurück; dann nehmt das Getreide für den Hunger eurer Familien und zieht davon!	33 Then the man who is lord of the country said to us: 'This is how I shall know if you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, while the rest of you go home with rations for your starving families.
34 Aber bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir! Daran will ich erkennen, daß ihr keine Spione seid, sondern ehrliche Leute. Euren Bruder gebe ich euch zurück, und dann könnt ihr im Lande Handel treiben.""	34 When you come back to me with your youngest brother, and I know that you are honest men and not spies, I will restore your brother to you, and you may move about freely in the land.'"
35 Sie leerten ihre Säcke, und ein jeder fand seinen Geldbeutel in seinem Sack. Sie sahen ihre Geldbeutel, sie selbst und auch ihr Vater, und sie fürchteten sich.	35 When they were emptying their sacks, there in each one's sack was his moneybag! At the sight of their moneybags, they and their father were dismayed.
36 Ihr Vater Jakob wandte sich an sie: "Ihr macht mich kinderlos; Joseph ist nicht mehr, Simeon ist nicht mehr, den Benjamin nehmt ihr auch fort; all dieses ist über mich gekommen."	36 Their father Jacob said to them: "Must you make me childless? Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone, and now you would take away Benjamin! Why must such things always happen to me?"
37 Ruben antwortete seinem Vater: "Meine beiden Söhne magst du töten, wenn ich ihn dir nicht zurückbringe! Vertraue ihn doch nur meiner Hand an; ich bringe ihn dir bestimmt wieder!"	37 Then Reuben told his father: "Put him in my care, and I will bring him back to you. You may kill my own two sons if I do not return him to you."
38 Er aber sagte: "Mein Sohn wird nicht mit euch hinabziehen; sein Bruder ist tot, und er allein ist noch übrig. Stieße ihm aber auf dem Wege, den ihr zieht, ein Unfall zu, dann würdet ihr mein graues Haar mit Kummer in das Totenland hinunterbringen."	38 But Jacob replied: "My son shall not go down with you. Now that his full brother is dead, he is the only one left. If some disaster should befall him on the journey you must make, you would send my white head down to the nether world in grief."
