1 Die beiden Engel kamen abends nach Sodom. Lot saß gerade am Stadttor von Sodom. Als er sie sah, stand er vor ihnen auf und verneigte sich tief zur Erde.	1 When the two angels reached Sodom in the evening, Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. As soon asLot saw them, he stood up to greet them, and bowed to the ground.
2 Er sprach: "O meine Herren, kehrt doch ein ins Haus eures Knechtes! Übernachtet und wascht euch die Füße! Am frühen Morgen könnt ihr dann aufstehen und eures Weges ziehen!" Sie aber antworteten: "Nein, wir wollen im Freien übernachten!"	2 'My lords,' he said, 'please come down to your servant's house to stay the night and wash your feet.Then you can make an early start on your journey.' 'No,' they said, 'we shal spend the night in the square.'
3 Er nötigte sie inständig; deshalb kehrten sie bei ihm ein. Sie kamen in sein Haus, und er bereitete ihnen ein Mahl. Er buk ungesäuertes Brot, und man aß.	3 But he pressed them so much that they went home with him and entered his house. He prepared ameal for them, baking unleavened bread, and they had supper.
4 Noch waren sie nicht schlafen gegangen, da umringten die Männer der Stadt, Sodoms Leute, das Haus. Jung und alt waren dabei, das Volk insgesamt vom äußersten Ende her.	4 They had not gone to bed when the house was surrounded by the townspeople, the men of Sodomboth young and old, al the people without exception.
5 Sie riefen Lot zu und sprachen zu ihm: "Wo sind denn die Männer, die heute nacht zu dir gekommen sind? Führe sie heraus zu uns, wir wollen sie erkennen!"	5 Cal ing out to Lot they said, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us sothat we can have intercourse with them.'
6 Lot ging zu ihnen hinaus vor die Tür, er schloß sie aber hinter sich zu.	6 Lot came out to them at the door and, having shut the door behind him,
7 Er sagte: "Meine Brüder, handelt doch nicht so verwerflich!	7 said, 'Please, brothers, do not be wicked.
8 Seht, ich habe zwei Töchter die noch keinen Mann kennen; ich will sie zu euch herausbringen. Tut mit ihnen, wie es euch gut dünkt; nur diesen Männern tut nichts; denn sie sind doch nun einmal unter den Schatten meines Daches getreten."	8 Look, I have two daughters who are virgins. I am ready to send them out to you, for you to treat asyou please, but do nothing to these men since they are now under the protection of my roof.'
9 Sie aber sprachen: "Hinweg da!" Sie meinten: "Da ist ein einzelner als Fremdling hierher gekommen und wirft sich jetzt zum Richter auf! Dir wollen wir noch schlimmer zusetzen als jenen!" Sie drangen ungestüm auf Lot ein und waren nahe daran, die Tür aufzubrechen.	9 But they retorted, 'Stand back! This fel ow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play thejudge. Now we shal treat you worse than them.' Then they forced Lot back and moved forward to break downthe door.
10 Die Männer aber streckten ihre Hand aus, um Lot zu sich ins Haus zu ziehen. Die Tür verschlossen sie.	10 But the men reached out, pul ed Lot back into the house with them, and shut the door.
11 Dann schlugen sie die Leute vor dem Tor des Hauses mit Blindheit, klein und groß, so daß sie sich vergebens bemühten, das Tor zu finden.	11 And they dazzled those who were at the door of the house, one and al , with a blinding light, so thatthey could not find the doorway.
12 Die Männer sprachen zu Lot: "Hast du noch jemand hier, einen Schwiegersohn, deine Söhne und Töchter oder sonst noch einen aus der Stadt? Bringe sie fort von diesem Orte!	12 The men said to Lot, 'Have you anyone else here? Your sons, your daughters and al your people inthe city, take them away,
13 Denn wir wollen diesen Ort vernichten; groß ist nämlich das Klagegeschrei, das vor den Herrn über ihn gekommen ist. Der Herr hat uns gesandt, ihn zu vernichten."	13 for we are about to destroy this place, since the outcry to Yahweh against those in it has grown soloud that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.'
14 Lot ging hinaus und redete zu seinen Schwiegersöhnen, die seine Töchter heiraten sollten: "Auf! Verlaßt diesen Ort! Denn vernichten wird der Herr diese Stadt." Er aber kam seinen Schwiegersöhnen vor wie einer, der zu scherzen beliebte.	14 So Lot went off and spoke to his future sons-in-law who were to marry his daughters. 'On your feet!'he said, 'Leave this place, for Yahweh is about to destroy the city.' But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
15 Als aber die Morgenröte aufstieg, drängten die Engel den Lot und sprachen: "Auf! Nimm deine Frau und deine beiden Töchter, die da sind, damit du nicht durch die Schuld der Stadt dahingerafft wirst!"	15 When dawn broke the angels urged Lot on, 'To your feet! Take your wife and your two daughterswho are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.'
16 Er zauderte noch; da ergriffen die Männer ihn, seine Frau und seine beiden Töchter bei den Händen, weil der Herr mit ihm Mitleid hatte. Sie führten ihn hinaus und ließen ihn außerhalb der Stadt rasten.	16 And as he hesitated, the men seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters --Yahweh being merciful to him -- and led him out and left him outside the city.
17 Während sie jene hinausbrachten, sprach der eine: "Rette dein Leben, blicke nicht hinter dich, bleibe nicht stehen im ganzen Umkreis, sondern rette dich ins Gebirge, damit du nicht dahingerafft wirst!"	17 When they had brought him outside, he was told, 'Flee for your life. Do not look behind you or stopanywhere on the plain. Flee to the hil s or you wil be swept away.'
18 Lot antwortete ihnen: "Nicht doch, Herr!	18 'Oh no, my lord!' Lot said to them,
19 Dein Knecht fand ja Gnade vor deinen Augen. Große Gunst hast du mir erwiesen, mein Leben zu erhalten; ich jedoch kann mich nicht ins Gebirge retten; sonst könnte mich das Unheil einholen, und ich müßte sterben.	19 'You have already been very good to your servant and shown me even greater love by saving mylife, but I cannot flee to the hil s, or disaster wil overtake me and I shall die.
20 Diese Stadt da ist doch nahe, um dahin zu entweichen; sie ist nur klein; dahin will ich mich retten! Ist sie nicht klein genug, daß ich am Leben bleiben kann?"	20 That town over there is near enough to flee to, and is small. Let me flee there-after al it is only asmal place -- and so survive.'
21 Er antwortete ihm: "Auch darin gebe ich dir nach. Ich will die Stadt, von der du gesprochen hast, nicht zerstören.	21 He replied, 'I grant you this favour too, and wil not overthrow the town you speak of.
22 Eilends rette dich dorthin! Denn ich kann nichts tun, bis du dort ankommst." Daher nannte man die Stadt Zoar (Kleinheit).	22 Hurry, flee to that one, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.' That is why the town is namedZoar.
23 Die Sonne war eben über der Erde aufgegangen, und Lot war in Zoar angekommen.	23 The sun rose over the horizon just as Lot was entering Zoar.
24 Da ließ der Herr auf Sodom und Gomorra Schwefel und Feuer vom Himmel herab regnen	24 Then Yahweh rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire of his own sending.
25 und vernichtete von Grund auf jene Städte, die ganze Umgebung, alle Einwohner der Städte und was auf dem Erdboden wuchs.	25 He overthrew those cities and the whole plain, with al the people living in the cities and everythingthat grew there.
26 Lots Frau sah hinter sich und erstarrte zur Salzsäule.	26 But Lot's wife looked back, and was turned into a pil ar of salt.
27 Abraham begab sich in der Morgenfrühe zu dem Orte, wo er vor dem Herrn gestanden hatte.	27 Next morning, Abraham hurried to the place where he had stood before Yahweh,
28 Er blickte nach Sodom und Gomorra aus und schaute das ganze Gefilde jenes Landes, und siehe, Rauch stieg aus dem Erdboden wie der Rauch eines Schmelzofens.	28 and looking towards Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole area of the plain, he saw the smoke risingfrom the ground like smoke from a furnace.
29 Als Gott die Städte des Gefildes zerstörte, erinnerte er sich an Abraham. Er ließ Lot aus der Zerstörung entkommen, während er die Städte vernichtete, in denen Lot gewohnt hatte.	29 Thus it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he did not forget Abraham and herescued Lot from the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities where Lot was living.
30 Lot aber ging von Zoar hinauf und ließ sich mit seinen beiden Töchtern im Gebirge nieder. Denn er hatte Angst, in Zoar zu wohnen. So nahmen er und seine beiden Töchter Wohnung in der Höhle.	30 After leaving Zoar Lot settled in the hill country with his two daughters, for he dared not stay at Zoar.He lived in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31 Da sprach die Ältere zu der Jüngeren: "Unser Vater ist alt, ein Mann ist nicht da, der mit uns verkehren könnte, wie es in aller Welt Brauch ist.	31 The elder said to the younger, 'Our father is an old man, and there is no one here to marry us in thenormal way of the world.
32 Komm, wir wollen unseren Vater mit Wein berauschen und uns dann zu ihm legen, damit wir von ihm Nachkommen erhalten!"	32 Come on, let us ply our father with wine and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race byour father.'
33 Sie machten also in jener Nacht ihren Vater mit Wein trunken. Daraufhin legte sich die Ältere zu ihm; er aber spürte nichts, weder wie sie sich hinlegte, noch wie sie aufstand.	33 That night they made their father drunk, and the elder slept with her father though he was unaware ofher coming to bed or of her leaving.
34 Am anderen Tage sprach die Ältere zu der Jüngeren: "Gestern habe ich mich zu meinem Vater gelegt. Wir wollen ihn auch für heute nacht betrunken machen! Dann geh du hinein und lege dich zu ihm, dann werden wir Nachkommen erhalten!"	34 The next day the elder said to the younger, 'Last night, I was the one who slept with our father. Letus make him drunk again tonight, and you go and sleep with him. In this way we can preserve the race by ourfather.'
35 Sie machten darauf auch in jener Nacht ihren Vater mit Wein trunken. Die Jüngere erhob sich und legte sich zu ihm; er aber spürte nicht, wie sie sich hinlegte und wie sie aufstand.	35 They made their father drunk that night too, and the younger went and slept with him, though he wasunaware of her coming to bed or of her leaving.
36 So empfingen die beiden Töchter Lots von ihrem Vater.	36 Both Lot's daughters thus became pregnant by their father.
37 Die Ältere gebar einen Sohn, den sie Moab nannte. Er ist der Stammvater der Moabiter bis heute.	37 The elder gave birth to a son whom she named Moab; and he is the ancestor of the Moabites of ourown times.
38 Auch die Jüngere gebar einen Sohn, den sie Ben-Ammi nannte. Er ist der Stammvater der Ammoniter bis heute.	38 The younger also gave birth to a son whom she named Ben-Ammi; and he is the ancestor of theBene-Ammon of our own times.
