1 Chronicles 21

1 Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.	1 ויעמד שטן על ישראל ויסת את דויד למנות את ישראל
2 David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'	2 ויאמר דויד אל יואב ואל שרי העם לכו ספרו את ישראל מבאר שבע ועד דן והביאו אלי ואדעה את מספרם
3 Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lordking, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involveIsrael in guilt?'	3 ויאמר יואב יוסף יהוה על עמו כהם מאה פעמים הלא אדני המלך כלם לאדני לעבדים למה יבקש זאת אדני למה יהיה לאשמה לישראל
4 But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout al Israel, and thenreturned to Jerusalem.	4 ודבר המלך חזק על יואב ויצא יואב ויתהלך בכל ישראל ויבא ירושלם
5 Joab gave David the census results for the people: al Israel had eleven hundred thousand men whocould wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.	5 ויתן יואב את מספר מפקד העם אל דויד ויהי כל ישראל אלף אלפים ומאה אלף איש שלף חרב ויהודה ארבע מאות ושבעים אלף איש שלף חרב
6 Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.	6 ולוי ובנימן לא פקד בתוכם כי נתעב דבר המלך את יואב
7 God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.	7 וירע בעיני האלהים על הדבר הזה ויך את ישראל
8 David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive yourservant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	8 ויאמר דויד אל האלהים חטאתי מאד אשר עשיתי את הדבר הזה ועתה העבר נא את עוון עבדך כי נסכלתי מאד
9 Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,	9 וידבר יהוה אל גד חזה דויד לאמר
10 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	10 לך ודברת אל דויד לאמר כה אמר יהוה שלוש אני נטה עליך בחר לך אחת מהנה ואעשה לך
11 So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,	11 ויבא גד אל דויד ויאמר לו כה אמר יהוה קבל לך
12 "Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of yourenemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country,while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel." Now decide how I am to answer himwho sends me.'	12 אם שלוש שנים רעב ואם שלשה חדשים נספה מפני צריך וחרב אויבך למשגת ואם שלשת ימים חרב יהוה ודבר בארץ ומלאך יהוה משחית בכל גבול ישראל ועתה ראה מה אשיב את שלחי דבר
13 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fal into Yahweh's hand, since hismercies are very great, than for me to fal into the hands of human enemies.'	13 ויאמר דויד אל גד צר לי מאד אפלה נא ביד יהוה כי רבים רחמיו מאד וביד אדם אל אפל
14 So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.	14 ויתן יהוה דבר בישראל ויפל מישראל שבעים אלף איש
15 Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahwehlooked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold yourhand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	15 וישלח האלהים מלאך לירושלם להשחיתה וכהשחית ראה יהוה וינחם על הרעה ויאמר למלאך המשחית רב עתה הרף ידך ומלאך יהוה עמד עם גרן ארנן היבוסי
16 David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawnsword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fel on theirfaces,	16 וישא דויד את עיניו וירא את מלאך יהוה עמד בין הארץ ובין השמים וחרבו שלופה בידו נטויה על ירושלם ויפל דויד והזקנים מכסים בשקים על פניהם
17 and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned andactual y committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lieheavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'	17 ויאמר דויד אל האלהים הלא אני אמרתי למנות בעם ואני הוא אשר חטאתי והרע הרעותי ואלה הצאן מה עשו יהוה אלהי תהי נא ידך בי ובבית אבי ובעמך לא למגפה
18 The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tel David that David should go up and erect an altar toYahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	18 ומלאך יהוה אמר אל גד לאמר לדויד כי יעלה דויד להקים מזבח ליהוה בגרן ארנן היבסי
19 So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.	19 ויעל דויד בדבר גד אשר דבר בשם יהוה
20 Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.	20 וישב ארנן וירא את המלאך וארבעת בניו עמו מתחבאים וארנן דש חטים
21 When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off thethreshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.	21 ויבא דויד עד ארנן ויבט ארנן וירא את דויד ויצא מן הגרן וישתחו לדויד אפים ארצה
22 David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar toYahweh on it; let me have it at the ful price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said toDavid,	22 ויאמר דויד אל ארנן תנה לי מקום הגרן ואבנה בו מזבח ליהוה בכסף מלא תנהו לי ותעצר המגפה מעל העם
23 'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shal give you the oxen for burntofferings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shal give everything.'	23 ויאמר ארנן אל דויד קח לך ויעש אדני המלך הטוב בעיניו ראה נתתי הבקר לעלות והמורגים לעצים והחטים למנחה הכל נתתי
24 'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the ful price. I wil not offer Yahweh whatbelongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'	24 ויאמר המלך דויד לארנן לא כי קנה אקנה בכסף מלא כי לא אשא אשר לך ליהוה והעלות עולה חנם
25 So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.	25 ויתן דויד לארנן במקום שקלי זהב משקל שש מאות
26 There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called onYahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.	26 ויבן שם דויד מזבח ליהוה ויעל עלות ושלמים ויקרא אל יהוה ויענהו באש מן השמים על מזבח העלה
27 Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.	27 ויאמר יהוה למלאך וישב חרבו אל נדנה
28 Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,David offered sacrifice there.	28 בעת ההיא בראות דויד כי ענהו יהוה בגרן ארנן היבוסי ויזבח שם
29 The Dwel ing which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time onthe high place at Gibeon,	29 ומשכן יהוה אשר עשה משה במדבר ומזבח העולה בעת ההיא בבמה בגבעון
30 but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.	30 ולא יכל דויד ללכת לפניו לדרש אלהים כי נבעת מפני חרב מלאך יהוה
