1 Chronicles 21

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.	1 Satan se dressa contre Israël et il incita David à dénombrer les Israélites.
2 David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'	2 David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: "Allez compter Israël, de Bersabée à Dan, puisrevenez m'en faire connaître le chiffre."
3 Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lordking, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involveIsrael in guilt?'	3 Joab répondit: "Que Yahvé accroisse son peuple de cent fois autant! Monseigneur le roi, nesont-ils pas tous les serviteurs de Monseigneur? Pourquoi Monseigneur fait-il cette enquête? Pourquoi Israëldeviendrait-il coupable?"
4 But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout al Israel, and thenreturned to Jerusalem.	4 Cependant l'ordre du roi s'imposa à Joab. Joab partit, il parcourut tout Israël, puis rentra àJérusalem.
5 Joab gave David the census results for the people: al Israel had eleven hundred thousand men whocould wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.	5 Joab fournit à David le chiffre obtenu pour le recensement du peuple; tout Israël comptait1.100.000 hommes tirant l'épée, et Juda 470.000 hommes tirant l'épée.
6 Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.	6 L'ordre du roi avait tant répugné à Joab qu'il n'avait recensé ni Lévi ni Benjamin.
7 God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.	7 Dieu vit avec déplaisir cette affaire et il frappa Israël.
8 David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive yourservant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	8 David dit alors à Dieu: "C'est un grand péché que j'ai commis en cette affaire! Maintenant,veuille pardonner cette faute à ton serviteur, car j'ai commis une grande folie."
9 Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,	9 Yahvé dit alors à Gad, le voyant de David:
10 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	10 "Va dire à David: Ainsi parle Yahvé. Je te propose trois choses: choisis-en une et jel'exécuterai pour toi."
11 So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,	11 Donc Gad se rendit chez David et lui dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé. Il te faut accepter
12 "Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of yourenemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country,while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel." Now decide how I am to answer himwho sends me.'	12 soit trois années de famine, soit un désastre de trois mois devant tes ennemis, l'épée de tesadversaires dans les reins, soit l'épée de Yahvé et trois jours de peste dans le pays, l'ange de Yahvé ravageanttout le territoire d'Israël! Vois maintenant ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie."
13 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fal into Yahweh's hand, since hismercies are very great, than for me to fal into the hands of human enemies.'	13 David répondit à Gad: "Je suis dans une grande anxiété... Ah! que je tombe entre les mainsde Yahvé, car sa miséricorde est immense, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!"
14 So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.	14 Yahvé envoya donc la peste en Israël et, parmi les Israélites, 70.000 hommes tombèrent.
15 Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahwehlooked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold yourhand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	15 Puis Dieu envoya l'ange vers Jérusalem pour l'exterminer; mais au moment de l'exterminer,Yahvé regarda et se repentit de ce mal; et il dit à l'ange exterminateur: "Assez! Retire ta main." L'ange de Yahvése tenait alors près de l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen.
16 David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawnsword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fel on theirfaces,	16 Levant les yeux, David vit l'ange de Yahvé qui se tenait entre terre et ciel, l'épée dégainée àla main, tendue vers Jérusalem. Revêtus de sacs, David et les anciens tombèrent alors face contre terre,
17 and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned andactual y committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lieheavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'	17 et David dit à Dieu: "N'est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné de recenser le peuple? N'est-ce pasmoi qui ai péché et qui ai commis le mal? Mais ceux-là, c'est le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Yahvé, mon Dieu, queta main s'appesantisse donc sur moi et sur ma famille, mais que ton peuple échappe au fléau!"
18 The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tel David that David should go up and erect an altar toYahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	18 L'ange de Yahvé dit alors à Gad: "Que David monte et élève un autel à Yahvé sur l'aired'Ornân le Jébuséen."
19 So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.	19 David monta donc selon la parole que Gad lui avait dite au nom de Yahvé.
20 Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.	20 Or, en se retournant, Ornân avait vu l'ange et il se cachait avec ses quatre fils. Ornân était entrain de battre le froment
21 When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off thethreshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.	21 lorsque David se rendit auprès de lui. Ornân regarda, vit David, sortit de l'aire, et seprosterna devant David, la face contre terre.
22 David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar toYahweh on it; let me have it at the ful price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said toDavid,	22 David dit alors à Ornân: "Cède-moi l'emplacement de cette aire afin que j'y construise unautel pour Yahvé. Cède-le-moi pour sa pleine valeur en argent. Ainsi le fléau s'écartera du peuple."
23 'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shal give you the oxen for burntofferings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shal give everything.'	23 Ornân dit alors à David: "Prends, et que Monseigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semble bon!Vois: je donne les boeufs pour les holocaustes, le traîneau pour le bois et le grain pour l'oblation. Je donne letout."
24 'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the ful price. I wil not offer Yahweh whatbelongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'	24 Le roi David répondit à Ornân: "Non pas! je veux l'acheter pour sa pleine valeur en argent;car je ne veux pas prendre pour Yahvé ce qui t'appartient et offrir ainsi des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien."
25 So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.	25 David donna à Ornân pour ce lieu le poids de 600 sicles d'or.
26 There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called onYahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.	26 David construisit là un autel pour Yahvé, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices decommunion. Il invoqua Yahvé; Yahvé lui répondit en faisant tomber du ciel le feu sur l'autel des holocaustes
27 Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.	27 et il ordonna à l'ange de remettre l'épée au fourreau.
28 Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,David offered sacrifice there.	28 A cette époque, voyant que Yahvé lui avait répondu sur l'aire d'Ornân le Jébuséen, David yfit un sacrifice.
29 The Dwel ing which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time onthe high place at Gibeon,	29 La Demeure que Moïse avait faite dans le désert et l'autel des holocaustes se trouvaient àcette époque sur le haut lieu de Gabaôn,
30 but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.	30 mais David n'avait pu y aller devant Dieu pour s'adresser à lui, tant l'épée de l'ange deYahvé lui avait fait peur.
