NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Meanwhile, so many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. He began to speak, first to his disciples, "Beware of the leaven--that is, the hypocrisy--of the Pharisees.1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
"There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more.4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.
"Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the holy Spirit will not be forgiven.10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
When they take you before synagogues and before rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what your defense will be or about what you are to say.11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
For the holy Spirit will teach you at that moment what you should say."12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.
Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me."13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?"14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Then he told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?'17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!"19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God."21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
He said to (his) disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life and what you will eat, or about your body and what you will wear.22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
Notice the ravens: they do not sow or reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn, yet God feeds them. How much more important are you than birds!24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
Can any of you by worrying add a moment to your lifespan?25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
If even the smallest things are beyond your control, why are you anxious about the rest?26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
Notice how the flowers grow. They do not toil or spin. But I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of them.27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
If God so clothes the grass in the field that grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
As for you, do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not worry anymore.29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
All the nations of the world seek for these things, and your Father knows that you need them.30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
Instead, seek his kingdom, and these other things will be given you besides.31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
"Gird your loins and light your lamps35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;
and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.
Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants.38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.
You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.
Then Peter said, "Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?"41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
And the Lord replied, "Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper time?42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk,45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful.46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely;47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I if it be already kindled?
There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three;52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
He also said to the crowds, "When you see (a) cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain--and so it does;54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?
"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.
