1 Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph, had daughters named Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They came forward,	1 Si avvicinarono le figlie di Zelofcad, figlio di Efer, figlio di Galaad, figlio di Machir, figlio di Manasse, delle famiglie di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, che si chiamavano: Macla, Noa, Ogla, Milca, Tirza.
2 and standing in the presence of Moses, the priest Eleazar, the princes, and the whole community at the entrance of the meeting tent, said:	2 Stettero davanti a Mosè, davanti al sacerdote Eleazaro, davanti ai capi e a tutta la comunità, all'ingresso della tenda del convegno e dissero:
3 "Our father died in the desert. Although he did not join those who banded together against the LORD (in Korah's band), he died for his own sin without leaving any sons.	3 "Nostro padre è morto nel deserto: egli non appartenne alla lega che si radunò contro il Signore nella comunità di Core, perché morì nel suo peccato e non ebbe figli.
4 But why should our father's name be withdrawn from his clan merely because he had no son? Let us, therefore, have property among our father's kinsmen."	4 Perché sarebbe sottratto il nome di nostro padre dal mezzo della sua famiglia, per non aver figli? Dateci una proprietà in mezzo ai fratelli di nostro padre".
5 When Moses laid their case before the LORD,	5 Mosè presentò la loro causa davanti al Signore.
6 the LORD said to him,	6 Il Signore disse a Mosè:
7 "The plea of Zelophehad's daughters is just; you shall give them hereditary property among their father's kinsmen, letting their father's heritage pass on to them.	7 "Le figlie di Zelofcad hanno parlato bene: da' loro una proprietà in eredità in mezzo ai fratelli di loro padre e farai passare l'eredità di loro padre a loro.
8 Therefore, tell the Israelites: If a man dies without leaving a son, you shall let his heritage pass on to his daughter;	8 E dirai così ai figli d'Israele: "Se morirà un uomo e non avrà figli, farete passare la sua eredità a sua figlia.
9 if he has no daughter, you shall give his heritage to his brothers;	9 Se non avrà figlia, darete la sua eredità ai suoi fratelli.
10 if he has no brothers, you shall give his heritage to his father's brothers;	10 Se non avrà fratelli, darete la sua eredità ai fratelli di suo padre.
11 if his father had no brothers, you shall give his heritage to his nearest relative in his clan, who shall then take possession of it." This is the legal norm for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.	11 Se suo padre non avrà fratelli, darete la sua eredità a chi gli resta più vicino della sua famiglia e ne entrerà in possesso". Per i figli d'Israele sarà una norma di diritto, come il Signore ha ordinato a Mosè".
12 The LORD said to Moses, "Go up here into the Abarim Mountains and view the land that I am giving to the Israelites.	12 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Sali su questo monte degli Abarim per vedere la terra che ho dato ai figli d'Israele.
13 When you have viewed it, you too shall be taken to your people, as was your brother Aaron,	13 La vedrai e poi ti riunirai al tuo popolo anche tu, come si è riunito Aronne, tuo fratello,
14 because in the rebellion of the community in the desert of Zin you both rebelled against my order to manifest my sanctity to them by means of the water." (This is the water of Meribah of Kadesh in the desert of Zin.)	14 perché trasgrediste l'ordine datovi nel deserto di Zin, nella ribellione della comunità, quando dovevate santificarmi con l'acqua ai loro occhi". E' l'acqua di Meriba di Kades, del deserto di Zin.
15 Then Moses said to the LORD,	15 Mosè disse al Signore:
16 "May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, set over the community a man	16 "Il Signore, Dio degli spiriti di ogni carne, ponga a capo di questa comunità un uomo
17 who shall act as their leader in all things, to guide them in all their actions; that the LORD'S community may not be like sheep without a shepherd."	17 che esca davanti a loro ed entri davanti a loro, li faccia uscire e li faccia entrare, in modo che la comunità del Signore non sia come un gregge che non ha pastore".
18 And the LORD replied to Moses, "Take Joshua, son of Nun, a man of spirit, and lay your hand upon him.	18 Il Signore disse a Mosè: "Prendi Giosuè, figlio di Nun, uomo che ha lo spirito, e imponi la tua mano su di lui.
19 Have him stand in the presence of the priest Eleazar and of the whole community, and commission him before their eyes.	19 Poi lo farai stare davanti al sacerdote Eleazaro e davanti a tutta la comunità e ai loro occhi gli darai gli ordini.
20 Invest him with some of your own dignity, that the whole Israelite community may obey him.	20 Gli comunicherai la tua dignità, perché lo ascolti tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele.
21 He shall present himself to the priest Eleazar, to have him seek out for him the decisions of the Urim in the LORD'S presence; and as he directs, Joshua, all the Israelites with him, and the community as a whole shall perform all their actions."	21 Starà davanti al sacerdote Eleazaro, che consulterà per lui il giudizio degli urim davanti al Signore. Per ordine suo usciranno e per ordine suo entreranno, con lui, tutti i figli d'Israele e tutta la comunità".
22 Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. Taking Joshua and having him stand in the presence of the priest Eleazar and of the whole community,	22 Mosè fece come il Signore gli aveva ordinato: prese Giosuè e lo fece stare davanti al sacerdote Eleazaro e a tutta la comunità;
23 he laid his hands on him and gave him his commission, as the LORD had directed through Moses.	23 impose le sue mani su di lui e gli diede ordini, come il Signore aveva comandato per mezzo di Mosè.
