Sirach 38

1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.	1 Onora il medico per le sue prestazioni, perché il Signore ha creato anche lui;
2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.	2 l'arte di guarire viene dall'Altissimo, e chi guarisce riceve doni pure dal re.
3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.	3 La sua scienza fa camminare il medico a testa alta, egli riscuote ammirazione davanti ai grandi.
4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;	4 Il Signore ha creato le medicine dalla terra, l'uomo di senno non le detesta.
5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?	5 L'acqua non si addolcì con il legno, che rivelava così una sua peculiarità?
6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,	6 Il Signore ha dato la scienza agli uomini, perché fosse glorificato con questi poteri meravigliosi.
7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;	7 Con essi il medico guarisce e vince la sofferenza e il farmacista fa la sua mistura.
8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.	8 Ma non finiscono qui le opere del Signore che dà la pace sulla faccia della terra.
9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:	9 Figlio, nella tua malattia non disprezzare ciò, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.
10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;	10 Ripudia l'errore, correggi l'opera delle tue mani, purifica il cuore da ogni peccato.
11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.	11 Offri soave odore e un memoriale di fior di farina, offri pingui sacrifici secondo le tue possibilità.
12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.	12 E ricorri pure al medico; il Signore ha creato anche lui, non ti abbandoni, perché è necessario.
13 There are times that give him an advantage,	13 C'è il momento in cui la guarigione è nelle loro mani.
14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.	14 Anch'essi pregano il Signore perché conceda loro di dare conforto e guarigione ai loro pazienti.
15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.	15 Chi pecca davanti al suo Creatore cada nelle mani del medico.
16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:	16 Figlio, versa lacrime sul morto e con sincero dolore intona il lamento; avvolgi il cadavere come è stabilito e non trascurare la sua sepoltura.
17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,	17 Sii amaro nel gemito e caldo nel lamento, celebra il lutto secondo la sua dignità, un giorno o due per evitare le maldicenze, ma poi consólati dopo il dolore.
18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,	18 Dal dolore infatti esce la morte, e il dolore del cuore fiacca il vigore.
19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.	19 Il dolore resti solo nella disgrazia, ma poi una vita afflitta fa male al cuore.
20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.	20 Non abbandonare il tuo cuore al dolore, lìberatene, ricordando la tua fine.
21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.	21 Ben sapendo che non c'è ritorno, il tuo dolore a lui non giova e a te nuoce.
22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.	22 Ricòrdati che la sua sorte sarà pure tua, ieri a me domani a te.
23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.	23 Nel riposo del morto fa' riposare la sua memoria, consólati di lui, per la dipartita del suo spirito.
24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.	24 La sapienza dello scriba viene dal tempo speso nella riflessione, si diventa sapienti trascurando l'attività pratica.
25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?	25 Come penserà alla sapienza chi tiene l'aratro? La sua preoccupazione è quella di un buon pungolo, conduce i buoi e pensa al loro lavoro, i suoi discorsi riguardano i figli delle vacche.
26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.	26 Applica il suo cuore a far solchi, rimane insonne per il fieno delle giovenche.
27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.	27 Così è per ogni artigiano e costruttore, sempre occupato, di giorno e di notte: chi esegue l'intaglio dei sigilli mette tanta pazienza nel cambiare le forme; applica il suo cuore per raffigurare le immagini, finirà la sua opera perdendo il sonno.
28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.	28 Così il fabbro, posto vicino all'incudine, è intento al lavoro del ferro. Il vapore del fuoco liquefà le sue carni, mentre egli si accanisce al caldo del camino. Il colpo del martello ribatte nel suo orecchio, i suoi occhi sono fissi sul modello; applicherà il suo cuore per finire le sue opere, sarà insonne per realizzare un ornamento perfetto.
29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.	29 Così il ceramista, seduto al suo lavoro, gira con i suoi piedi la ruota, si trova sempre preoccupato per la sua opera, perché tutto il suo lavoro è soggetto al calcolo.
30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.	30 Col suo braccio modella l'argilla e con i piedi ne rammollisce la durezza, applica il suo cuore per finire la lucidatura e perde il sonno per pulire il forno.
31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;	31 Tutti costoro confidano nelle loro mani e ciascuno è abile nel suo mestiere.
32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.	32 Senza di loro la città non può essere costruita, nessuno può abitarvi o circolarvi.
33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;	33 Ma essi non sono ricercati per il consiglio del popolo, e nell'assemblea non emergono; sul seggio del giudice non siedono e la disposizione della legge non comprendono.
34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.	34 Non dimostrano né cultura né conoscenza della legge, e non sono perspicaci nei proverbi. Ma essi assicurano il funzionamento del mondo e nell'esercizio della loro arte c'è la loro preghiera.
