Sirach 38

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.	1 Honra al médico por sus servicios, como corresponde, porque también a él lo ha creado el Señor.
2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.	2 La curación procede del Altísimo, y el médico recibe presentes del rey.
3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.	3 La ciencia del médico afianza su prestigio y él se gana la admiración de los grandes.
4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;	4 El Señor hizo brotar las plantas medicinales, y el hombre prudente no las desprecia.
5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?	5 ¿Acaso una rama no endulzó el agua, a fin de que se conocieran sus propiedades?
6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,	6 El Señor dio a los hombres la ciencia, para ser glorificado por sus maravillas.
7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;	7 Con esos remedios el médico cura y quita el dolor, y el farmacéutico prepara sus ungüentos.
8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.	8 Así, las obras del Señor no tienen fin, y de él viene la salud a la superficie de la tierra.
9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:	9 Si estás enfermo, hijo mío, no seas negligentes, ruega al Señor, y él te sanará.
10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;	10 No incurras en falta, enmienda tu conducta y purifica tu corazón de todo pecado.
11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.	11 Ofrece el suave aroma y el memorial de harina, presenta una rica ofrenda, como si fuera la última.
12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.	12 Después, deja actuar al médico, porque el Señor lo creó; que no se aparte de ti, porque lo necesitas.
13 There are times that give him an advantage,	13 En algunos casos, tu mejoría está en sus manos,
14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.	14 y ellos mismos rogarán al Señor que les permita dar un alivio y curar al enfermo, para que se restablezca.
15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.	15 El hombre que peca delante de su Creador, ¡que caiga en manos del médico!
16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:	16 Hijo mío, por un muerto, derrama lágrimas, y entona un lamento, como quien sufre terriblemente. Entierra su cadáver en la forma establecida y no descuides su sepultura.
17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,	17 Llora amargamente, golpéate el pecho, y observa el duelo que él se merece, uno o dos días, para evitar comentarios, y luego consuélate de tu tristeza.
18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,	18 Porque la tristeza lleva a la muerte y un corazón abatido quita las fuerzas.
19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.	19 En la desgracia la tristeza es permanente, y el corazón maldice una vida miserable.
20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.	20 No te dejes llevar por la tristeza, aléjala, acordándote de tu fin.
21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.	21 Nunca lo olvides: ¡no hay camino de retorno! Al muerto, no podrás serle útil y te harás mal a ti.
22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.	22 «Recuerda mi destino, que será también el tuyo: ayer a mí y hoy a ti».
23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.	23 Ya que el muerto descansa, deja en paz su memoria, y trata de consolarte, porque ha partido su espíritu.
24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.	24 La sabiduría del escriba exige tiempo y dedicación, y el que no está absorbido por otras tareas, se hará sabio.
25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?	25 ¿Cómo se hará sabio el que maneja el arado y se enorgullece de empuñar la picana, el que guía los bueyes, trabaja con ellos, y no sabe hablar más que de novillos?
26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.	26 El pone todo su empeño en abrir los surcos y se desvela por dar forraje a las terneras.
27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.	27 Lo mismo pasa con el artesano y el constructor, que trabajan día y noche; con los que graban las efigies de los sellos y modifican pacientemente los diseños: ellos se dedican a reproducir el modelo y trabajan hasta tarde para acabar la obra.
28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.	28 Lo mismo pasa con el herrero, sentado junto al yunque, con la atención fija en el hierro que forja: el vaho del fuego derrite su carne y él se debate con el calor de la fragua; el ruido del martillo ensordece sus oídos y sus ojos están fijos en el modelo del objeto; pone todo su empeño en acabar sus obras y se desvela por dejarlas bien terminadas.
29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.	29 Lo mismo pasa con el alfarero, sentado junto a su obra, mientras hace girar el torno con sus pies: está concentrado exclusivamente en su tarea y apremiado por completar la cantidad;
30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.	30 con su brazo modela la arcilla y con los pies vence su resistencia; pone todo su empeño en acabar el barnizado y se desvela por limpiar el horno.
31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;	31 Todos ellos confían en sus manos, y cada uno se muestra sabio en su oficio.
32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.	32 Sin ellos no se levantaría ninguna ciudad, nadie la habitaría ni circularía por ella.
33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;	33 Pero no se los buscará para el consejo del pueblo ni tendrán preeminencia en la asamblea; no se sentarán en el tribunal del juez ni estarán versados en los decretos de la Alianza.
34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.	34 No harán brillar la instrucción ni el derecho, ni se los encontrará entre los autores de proverbios. Sin embargo, ellos afianzan la creación eterna y el objeto de su plegaria son los trabajos de su oficio.
