Sirach 18

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 El que vive eternamente lo creó todo por igual,
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 sólo el Señor será llamado justo.
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 A nadie dio poder de proclamar sus obras, pues ¿quién podrá rastrear sus maravillas?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 El poder de su majestad, ¿quién lo calculará? ¿quién pretenderá contar sus misericordias?
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 Nada hay que quitar, nada que añadir, y no se pueden rastrear las maravillas del Señor.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Cuando el hombre cree acabar, comienza entonces, cuando se para, se queda perplejo.
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 ¿Qué es el hombre? ¿para qué sirve? ¿cuál es su bien y cuál su mal?
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 El número de los días del hombre mucho será si llega a los cien años.
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Como gota de agua del mar, como grano de arena, tan pocos son sus años frente a la eternidad.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 Por eso el Señor es paciente con ellos, y derrama sobre ellos su misericordia.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 El ve y sabe que su fin es miserable, por eso multiplica su perdón.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 La misericordia del hombre sólo alcanza a su prójimo, la misericorida del Señor abarca a todo el mundo. El reprende, adoctrina y enseña, y hace volver, como un pastor, a su rebaño.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Tiene piedad de los que acogen la instrucción, y de los que se afanan por sus juicios.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Hijo, con tus beneficios no mezcles el reproche ni a tus regalos juntes palabras tristes.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 ¿No aplaca el rocío el viento ardiente? Así vale más la palabra que el regalo.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 ¿No ves que la palabra es más que un buen presente? Pues el hombre dadivoso une los dos.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 El necio aun sin dar hace afrenta, quema los ojos el don del envidioso.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Antes de hablar infórmate, cuídate antes de estar enfermo.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Antes de juzgar examínate a ti mismo, y en el día de la visita encontrarás perdón.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Antes de estar enfermo humíllate, cuando peques muestra arrepentimiento.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Nada te impida cumplir tu voto en el momento dado, no aguardes hasta la muerte para justificarte.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Antes de hacer un voto prepárate; no seas como el hombre que tienta al Señor.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Acuérdate de la ira de los últimos días, y del momento del castigo, cuando Dios vuelva su rostro.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 En tiempo de abundancia recuerda el tiempo de hambre, la pobreza y la penuria en días de riqueza.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 De la mañana a la tarde corre el tiempo, todo pasa presto delante del Señor.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 El hombre sabio es precavido en todo, en la ocasión de pecar se anda con cuidado.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Todo hombre prudente conoce la sabiduría, al que la encuentra le da su parabién.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Los prudentes en palabras hacen sabiduría y prodigan los proverbios acertados.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 No vayas detrás de tus pasiones, tus deseos refrena.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Si te consientes en todos los deseos, te harás la irrisión de tus enemigos.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 No te complazcas en la buena vida, no te avengas a asociarte con ella.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 No te empobrezcas festejando con dinero prestado, cuando nada tienes en tu bolsa.
