NEW AMERICAN BIBLESAGRADA BIBLIA
The LORD then said to Job:1 O Senhor, dirigindo-se a Jó, lhe disse:
Will we have arguing with the Almighty by the critic? Let him who would correct God give answer!2 Aquele que disputa com o Todo-poderoso apresente suas críticas! Aquele que discute com Deus responda!
Then Job answered the LORD and said:3 Jó respondeu ao Senhor nestes termos:
Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth.4 Leviano como sou, que posso responder-te? Ponho minha mão na boca;
Though I have spoken once, I will not do so again; though twice, I will do so no more.5 falei uma vez, não repetirei, duas vezes... nada acrescentarei.
Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:6 Então, do seio da tempestade, o Senhor deu a Jó esta resposta:
Gird up your loins now, like a man. I will question you, and you tell me the answers!7 Cinge os teus rins como um homem; vou interrogar-te, tu me responderás.
Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified?8 Queres reduzir a nada a minha justiça, e condenar-me antes de ter razão?
Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his?9 Tens um braço semelhante ao de Deus, e uma voz troante como a dele?
Adorn yourself with grandeur and majesty, and array yourself with glory and splendor.10 Orna-te então de grandeza e majestade, reveste-te de esplendor e glória!
Let loose the fury of your wrath;11 Espalha as ondas de tua cólera. Com um olhar, abaixa todo o orgulho;
tear down the wicked and shatter them. Bring down the haughty with a glance;12 com um olhar, humilha o soberbo, esmaga os maus no mesmo lugar em que eles estão.
bury them in the dust together; in the hidden world imprison them.13 Mete-os todos juntos debaixo da terra, amarra-lhes os rostos num lugar escondido.
Then will I too acknowledge that your own right hand can save you.14 Então eu também te louvarei por triunfares pela força de tua mão.
See, besides you I made Behemoth, that feeds on grass like an ox.15 Vê Beemot, que criei contigo, nutre-se de erva como o boi.
Behold the strength in his loins, and his vigor in the sinews of his belly.16 Sua força reside nos rins, e seu vigor nos músculos do ventre.
He carries his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are like cables.17 Levanta sua cauda como {um ramo} de cedro, os nervos de suas coxas são entrelaçados.
His bones are like tubes of bronze; his frame is like iron rods.18 Seus ossos são tubos de bronze, sua estrutura é feita de barras de ferro.
He came at the beginning of God's ways, and was made the taskmaster of his fellows;19 É obra-prima de Deus, foi criado como o soberano de seus companheiros.
For the produce of the mountains is brought to him, and of all wild animals he makes sport.20 As montanhas fornecem-lhe a pastagem, os animais dos campos divertem-se em volta dele.
Under the lotus trees he lies, in coverts of the reedy swamp.21 Deita-se sob os lótus, no segredo dos caniços e dos brejos;
The lotus trees cover him with their shade; all about him are the poplars on the bank.22 os lótus cobrem-no com sua sombra, os salgueiros da margem o cercam.
If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed; he is tranquil though the torrent surges about his mouth.23 Quando o rio transborda, ele não se assusta; mesmo que o Jordão levantasse até a sua boca, ele ficaria tranqüilo.
Who can capture him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a trap?24 Quem o seguraria pela frente, e lhe furaria as ventas para nelas passar cordas?
Can you lead about Leviathan with a hook, or curb his tongue with a bit?
Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce through his cheek with a gaff?
Will he then plead with you, time after time, or address you with tender words?
Will he make an agreement with you that you may have him as a slave forever?
Can you play with him, as with a bird? Can you put him in leash for your maidens?
Will the traders bargain for him? Will the merchants divide him up?
Can you fill his hide with barbs, or his head with fish spears?
Once you but lay a hand upon him, no need to recall any other conflict!
