1 The LORD then said to Job:	1 Il Signore riprese e disse a Giobbe:
2 Will we have arguing with the Almighty by the critic? Let him who would correct God give answer!	2 Il censore vorrà ancora contendere con l'Onnipotente? L'accusatore di Dio risponda!
3 Then Job answered the LORD and said:	3 Giobbe rivolto al Signore disse:
4 Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth.	4 Ecco, sono ben meschino: che ti posso rispondere? Mi metto la mano sulla bocca.
5 Though I have spoken once, I will not do so again; though twice, I will do so no more.	5 Ho parlato una volta, ma non replicherò. ho parlato due volte, ma non continuerò.
6 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	6 Allora il Signore rispose a Giobbe di mezzo al turbine e disse:
7 Gird up your loins now, like a man. I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	7 Cingiti i fianchi come un prode: io t'interrogherò e tu mi istruirai.
8 Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified?	8 Oseresti proprio cancellare il mio giudizio e farmi torto per avere tu ragione?
9 Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his?	9 Hai tu un braccio come quello di Dio e puoi tuonare con voce pari alla sua?
10 Adorn yourself with grandeur and majesty, and array yourself with glory and splendor.	10 Ornati pure di maestà e di sublimità, rivestiti di splendore e di gloria;
11 Let loose the fury of your wrath;	11 diffondi i furori della tua collera, mira ogni superbo e abbattilo,
12 tear down the wicked and shatter them. Bring down the haughty with a glance;	12 mira ogni superbo e umilialo, schiaccia i malvagi ovunque si trovino;
13 bury them in the dust together; in the hidden world imprison them.	13 nascondili nella polvere tutti insieme, rinchiudili nella polvere tutti insieme,
14 Then will I too acknowledge that your own right hand can save you.	14 anch'io ti loderò, perché hai trionfato con la destra.
15 See, besides you I made Behemoth, that feeds on grass like an ox.	15 Ecco, l'ippopotamo, che io ho creato al pari di te, mangia l'erba come il bue.
16 Behold the strength in his loins, and his vigor in the sinews of his belly.	16 Guarda, la sua forza è nei fianchi e il suo vigore nel ventre.
17 He carries his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are like cables.	17 Rizza la coda come un cedro, i nervi delle sue cosce s'intrecciano saldi,
18 His bones are like tubes of bronze; his frame is like iron rods.	18 le sue vertebre, tubi di bronzo, le sue ossa come spranghe di ferro.
19 He came at the beginning of God's ways, and was made the taskmaster of his fellows;	19 Esso è la prima delle opere di Dio; il suo creatore lo ha fornito di difesa.
20 For the produce of the mountains is brought to him, and of all wild animals he makes sport.	20 I monti gli offrono i loro prodotti e là tutte le bestie della campagna si trastullano.
21 Under the lotus trees he lies, in coverts of the reedy swamp.	21 Sotto le piante di loto si sdraia, nel folto del canneto della palude.
22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade; all about him are the poplars on the bank.	22 Lo ricoprono d'ombra i loti selvatici, lo circondano i salici del torrente.
23 If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed; he is tranquil though the torrent surges about his mouth.	23 Ecco, si gonfi pure il fiume: egli non trema, è calmo, anche se il Giordano gli salisse fino alla bocca.
24 Who can capture him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a trap?	24 Chi potrà afferrarlo per gli occhi, prenderlo con lacci e forargli le narici?
25 Can you lead about Leviathan with a hook, or curb his tongue with a bit?	25 Puoi tu pescare il Leviatan con l'amo e tener ferma la sua lingua con una corda,
26 Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce through his cheek with a gaff?	26 ficcargli un giunco nelle narici e forargli la mascella con un uncino?
27 Will he then plead with you, time after time, or address you with tender words?	27 Ti farà forse molte suppliche e ti rivolgerà dolci parole?
28 Will he make an agreement with you that you may have him as a slave forever?	28 Stipulerà forse con te un'alleanza, perché tu lo prenda come servo per sempre?
29 Can you play with him, as with a bird? Can you put him in leash for your maidens?	29 Scherzerai con lui come un passero, legandolo per le tue fanciulle?
30 Will the traders bargain for him? Will the merchants divide him up?	30 Lo metteranno in vendita le compagnie di pesca, se lo divideranno i commercianti?
31 Can you fill his hide with barbs, or his head with fish spears?	31 Crivellerai di dardi la sua pelle e con la fiocina la sua testa?
32 Once you but lay a hand upon him, no need to recall any other conflict!	32 Metti su di lui la mano: al ricordo della lotta, non rimproverai!
