Job 40

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The LORD then said to Job:	1 Alors Yahvé s'adressant à Job lui dit:
2 Will we have arguing with the Almighty by the critic? Let him who would correct God give answer!	2 L'adversaire de Shaddaï cédera-t-il? Le censeur de Dieu va-t-il répondre?
3 Then Job answered the LORD and said:	3 Et Job répondit à Yahvé:
4 Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth.	4 J'ai parlé à la légère: que te répliquerai-je? Je mettrai plutôt ma main sur ma bouche.
5 Though I have spoken once, I will not do so again; though twice, I will do so no more.	5 J'ai parlé une fois, je ne répéterai pas; deux fois, je n'ajouterai rien.
6 Then the LORD addressed Job out of the storm and said:	6 Yahvé répondit à Job du sein de la tempête et dit:
7 Gird up your loins now, like a man. I will question you, and you tell me the answers!	7 Ceins tes reins comme un brave: je vais t'interroger et tu m'instruiras.
8 Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified?	8 Veux-tu vraiment casser mon jugement, me condamner pour assurer ton droit?
9 Have you an arm like that of God, or can you thunder with a voice like his?	9 Ton bras a-t-il une vigueur divine, ta voix peut-elle tonner pareillement?
10 Adorn yourself with grandeur and majesty, and array yourself with glory and splendor.	10 Allons, pare-toi de majesté et de grandeur, revêts-toi de splendeur et de gloire.
11 Let loose the fury of your wrath;	11 Fais éclater les fureurs de ta colère, d'un regard, courbe l'arrogant.
12 tear down the wicked and shatter them. Bring down the haughty with a glance;	12 D'un regard, ravale l'homme superbe, écrase sur place les méchants.
13 bury them in the dust together; in the hidden world imprison them.	13 Enfouis-les ensemble dans le sol, emprisonne-les chacun dans le cachot.
14 Then will I too acknowledge that your own right hand can save you.	14 Et moi-même je te rendrai hommage, car tu peux assurer ton salut par ta droite.
15 See, besides you I made Behemoth, that feeds on grass like an ox.	15 Mais regarde donc Béhémoth, ma créature, tout comme toi! Il se nourrit d'herbe, comme le boeuf.
16 Behold the strength in his loins, and his vigor in the sinews of his belly.	16 Vois, sa force réside dans ses reins, sa vigueur dans les muscles de son ventre.
17 He carries his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are like cables.	17 Il raidit sa queue comme un cèdre, les nerfs de ses cuisses s'entrelacent.
18 His bones are like tubes of bronze; his frame is like iron rods.	18 Ses os sont des tubes d'airain, sa carcasse, comme du fer forgé.
19 He came at the beginning of God's ways, and was made the taskmaster of his fellows;	19 C'est lui la première des oeuvres de Dieu. Son Auteur le menaça de l'épée,
20 For the produce of the mountains is brought to him, and of all wild animals he makes sport.	20 lui interdit la région des montagnes et toutes les bêtes sauvages qui s'y ébattent.
21 Under the lotus trees he lies, in coverts of the reedy swamp.	21 Sous les lotus, il est couché, il se cache dans les roseaux des marécages.
22 The lotus trees cover him with their shade; all about him are the poplars on the bank.	22 Le couvert des lotus lui sert d'ombrage et les saules du torrent le protègent.
23 If the river grows violent, he is not disturbed; he is tranquil though the torrent surges about his mouth.	23 Si le fleuve déborde il ne s'émeut pas; un Jourdain lui jaillirait jusqu'à la gueule sans qu'il bronche.
24 Who can capture him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a trap?	24 Qui donc le saisira par les yeux, lui percera le nez avec des pieux?
25 Can you lead about Leviathan with a hook, or curb his tongue with a bit?	25 Et Léviathan, le pêches-tu à l'hameçon, avec une corde comprimes-tu sa langue?
26 Can you put a rope into his nose, or pierce through his cheek with a gaff?	26 Fais-tu passer un jonc dans ses naseaux, avec un croc perces-tu sa mâchoire?
27 Will he then plead with you, time after time, or address you with tender words?	27 Est-ce lui qui te suppliera longuement, te parlera d'un ton timide?
28 Will he make an agreement with you that you may have him as a slave forever?	28 S'engagera-t-il par contrat envers toi, pour devenir ton serviteur à vie?
29 Can you play with him, as with a bird? Can you put him in leash for your maidens?	29 T'amusera-t-il comme un passereau, l'attacheras-tu pour la joie de tes filles?
30 Will the traders bargain for him? Will the merchants divide him up?	30 Sera-t-il mis en vente par des associés, puis débité entre marchands?
31 Can you fill his hide with barbs, or his head with fish spears?	31 Cribleras-tu sa peau de dards, le harponneras-tu à la tête comme un poisson?
32 Once you but lay a hand upon him, no need to recall any other conflict!	32 Pose seulement la main sur lui: au souvenir de la lutte, tu ne recommenceras plus!
