JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Cinq jours plus tard, le grand prêtre Ananie descendit avec quelques anciens et un avocat, un certainTertullus, et, devant le gouverneur, ils se constituèrent accusateurs de Paul.	1 Five days later the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders and an advocate namedTertul us, and they laid information against Paul before the governor.
2 Celui-ci fut appelé, et Tertullus entama l'accusation en ces termes: "La paix profonde dont nousjouissons grâce à toi et les réformes dont cette nation est redevable à ta providence,	2 Paul was called, and Tertullus opened for the prosecution, 'Your Excel ency, Felix, the unbroken peacewe enjoy and the reforms this nation owes to your foresight
3 en tout et partout nous les accueillons, très excellent Félix, avec toutes sortes d'actions de grâces.	3 are matters we accept, always and everywhere, with al gratitude.
4 Mais pour ne pas t'importuner davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un instant avec la bienveillancequi te caractérise.	4 I do not want to take up too much of your time, but I urge you in your graciousness to give us a briefhearing.
5 Cet homme, nous l'avons constaté, est une peste: il suscite des désordres chez tous les Juifs dumonde entier, et c'est un meneur du parti des Nazôréens.	5 We have found this man a perfect pest; he stirs up trouble among Jews the world over and is aringleader of the Nazarene sect.
6 Il a même tenté de profaner le Temple, et nous l'avons alors arrêté.	6 He has even attempted to profane the Temple. We placed him under arrest.
	7 'I know that you have administered justice over this nation for many years, and I can therefore speakwith confidence in my defence.
8 C'est par lui que tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, t'assurer du bien-fondé de toutes nosaccusations contre lui."	8 If you ask him you can find out for yourself the truth of al our accusations against this man.'
9 Les Juifs l'appuyèrent, assurant qu'il en était bien ainsi.	9 The Jews supported him, asserting that these were the facts.
10 Alors, le gouverneur lui ayant fait signe de parler, Paul répondit: "Voilà, je le sais, de nombreusesannées que tu as cette nation sous ta juridiction; aussi est-ce avec confiance que je plaiderai ma cause.	10 When the governor motioned him to speak, Paul answered:
11 Tu peux t'en assurer: il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté en pèlerinage à Jérusalem,	11 As you can verify for yourself, it is no more than twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem onpilgrimage,
12 et, ni dans le Temple, ni dans les synagogues, ni par la ville, on ne m'a trouvé en discussion avecquelqu'un ou en train d'ameuter la foule.	12 and it is not true that they ever found me arguing with anyone or stirring up the mob, either in theTemple, in the synagogues, or about the town;
13 Ils ne peuvent pas davantage te prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.	13 neither can they give you any proof of the accusations they are making against me now.
14 "Je t'avoue pourtant ceci: c'est suivant la Voie, qualifiée par eux de parti, que je sers le Dieu de mespères, gardant ma foi à tout ce qu'il y a dans la Loi et à ce qui est écrit dans les Prophètes,	14 'What I do admit to you is this: it is according to the Way, which they describe as a sect, that I worshipthe God of my ancestors, retaining my belief in al points of the Law and in what is written in the prophets;
15 ayant en Dieu l'espérance, comme ceux-ci l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justeset des pécheurs.	15 and I hold the same hope in God as they do that there will be a resurrection of the upright and thewicked alike.
16 C'est pourquoi, moi aussi, je m'applique à avoir sans cesse une conscience irréprochable devantDieu et devant les hommes.	16 In these things, I, as much as they, do my best to keep a clear conscience at al times before God andeveryone.
17 "Au bout de bien des années, je suis venu apporter des aumônes à ma nation et présenter desoffrandes:	17 'After several years I came to bring relief-money to my nation and to make offerings;
18 c'est ainsi qu'ils m'ont trouvé dans le Temple; je m'étais purifié et ne provoquais ni attroupement nitumulte.	18 it was in connection with these that they found me in the Temple; I had been purified, and there wasno crowd involved, and no disturbance.
19 Mais quelques Juifs d'Asie... c'est eux qui auraient dû se présenter devant toi et m'accuser, s'ilsavaient quelque chose contre moi!	19 But some Jews from Asia -- these are the ones who should have appeared before you and accusedme of whatever they had against me.
20 Que ceux-ci du moins disent, eux, de quel délit ils m'ont trouvé coupable lorsque j'ai comparudevant le Sanhédrin!	20 At least let those who are present say what crime they held against me when I stood before theSanhedrin,
21 A moins qu'il ne s'agisse de cette seule parole que j'ai criée, debout au milieu d'eux: C'est à cause dela résurrection des morts que je suis mis aujourd'hui en jugement devant vous."	21 unless it were to do with this single claim, when I stood up among them and cal ed out, "It is about theresurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today." '
22 Félix, qui était fort exactement informé de ce qui concerne la Voie, les ajourna en disant: "Dès quele tribun Lysias sera descendu, je statuerai sur votre affaire."	22 At this, Felix, who was fairly well informed about the Way, adjourned the case, saying, 'When Lysiasthe tribune comes down I will give judgement about your case.'
23 Il prescrivit au centurion de garder Paul prisonnier, mais de lui laisser quelques facilités et den'empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre service.	23 He then gave orders to the centurion that Paul should be kept under arrest but free from restriction,and that none of his own people should be prevented from seeing to his needs.
24 Quelques jours plus tard, Félix vint avec sa femme Drusille, qui était juive. Il envoya chercher Paulet l'écouta parler de la foi au Christ Jésus.	24 Some days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and gave him ahearing on the subject of faith in Christ Jesus.
25 Mais comme il se mettait à discourir sur la justice, la continence, le jugement à venir, Félix pritpeur et répondit: "Pour le moment, tu peux aller. Je te rappellerai à la première occasion."	25 But when Paul began to treat of uprightness, self-control and the coming Judgement, Felix took frightand said, 'You may go for the present; I wil send for you when I find it convenient.'
26 Il espérait par ailleurs que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent; aussi l'envoyait-il assez souvent chercherpour converser avec lui.	26 At the same time he had hopes of receiving money from Paul, and for this reason he sent for himfrequently and had talks with him.
27 Après deux années révolues, Félix reçut pour successeur Porcius Festus. Voulant faire plaisir auxJuifs, Félix laissa Paul en captivité.	27 When two years came to an end, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus and, being anxious to gainfavour with the Jews, Felix left Paul in custody.
