1 Wherefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest. For wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself. For thou dost the same things which thou judgest.1 Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of you who passes judgment. For by the standard by which you judge another you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very same things.
2 For we know that the judgment of God is, according to truth, against them that do such things.2 We know that the judgment of God on those who do such things is true.
3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them who do such things, and dost the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?3 Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?
4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and patience, and longsuffering? Knowest thou not, that the benignity of God leadeth thee to penance?4 Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would lead you to repentance?
5 But according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, thou treasurest up to thyself wrath, against the day of wrath, and revelation of the just judgment of God.5 By your stubbornness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God,
6 Who will render to every man according to his works.6 who will repay everyone according to his works:
7 To them indeed, who according to patience in good work, seek glory and honour and incorruption, eternal life:7 eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works,
8 But to them that are contentious, and who obey not the truth, but give credit to iniquity, wrath and indignation.8 but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness.
9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek.9 Yes, affliction and distress will come upon every human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek.
10 But glory, and honour, and peace to every one that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.10 But there will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, Jew first and then Greek.
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.11 There is no partiality with God.
12 For whosoever have sinned without the law, shall perish without the law; and whosoever have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law.12 All who sin outside the law will also perish without reference to it, and all who sin under the law will be judged in accordance with it.
13 For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.13 For it is not those who hear the law who are just in the sight of God; rather, those who observe the law will be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature those things that are of the law; these having not the law are a law to themselves:14 For when the Gentiles who do not have the law by nature observe the prescriptions of the law, they are a law for themselves even though they do not have the law.
15 Who shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness to them, and their thoughts between themselves accusing, or also defending one another,15 They show that the demands of the law are written in their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even defend them
16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge people's hidden works through Christ Jesus.
17 But if thou art called a Jew and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,17 Now if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast of God
18 And knowest his will, and approvest the more profitable things, being instructed by the law,18 and know his will and are able to discern what is important since you are instructed from the law,
19 Art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them that are in darkness,19 and if you are confident that you are a guide for the blind and a light for those in darkness,
20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having the form of knowledge and of truth in the law.20 that you are a trainer of the foolish and teacher of the simple, because in the law you have the formulation of knowledge and truth--
21 Thou therefore that teachest another, teachest not thyself: thou that preachest that men should not steal, stealest:21 then you who teach another, are you failing to teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
22 Thou that sayest, men should not commit adultery, committest adultery: thou that abhorrest idols, committest sacrilege:22 You who forbid adultery, do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob temples?
23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, by transgression of the law dishonourest God.23 You who boast of the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
24 (For the name of God through you is blasphemed among the Gentiles, as it is written.)24 For, as it is written, "Because of you the name of God is reviled among the Gentiles."
25 Circumcision profiteth indeed, if thou keep the law; but if thou be a transgressor of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.25 Circumcision, to be sure, has value if you observe the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
26 If, then, the uncircumcised keep the justices of the law, shall not this uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?26 Again, if an uncircumcised man keeps the precepts of the law, will he not be considered circumcised?
27 And shall not that which by nature is uncircumcision, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision art a transgressor of the law?27 Indeed, those who are physically uncircumcised but carry out the law will pass judgment on you, with your written law and circumcision, who break the law.
28 For it is not he is a Jew, who is so outwardly; nor is that circumcision which is outwardly in the flesh:28 One is not a Jew outwardly. True circumcision is not outward, in the flesh.
29 But he is a Jew, that is one inwardly; and the circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.29 Rather, one is a Jew inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart, in the spirit, not the letter; his praise is not from human beings but from God.
