1 When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.	1 Après avoir dit ces choses, Jésus alla avec ses disciples au-delà du torrent de Cédron, où il y avait un jardin, dans lequel il entra, lui et ses disciples.
2 And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.	2 Judas, qui le trahissait, connaissait aussi ce lieu, parce que Jésus y était souvent venu avec ses disciples.
3 Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 Judas, ayant donc pris la cohorte, et des gardes fournis par les princes des prêtres et les pharisiens, vint là avec des lanternes, des flambeaux et des armes.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?	4 Jésus, sachant tout ce qui devait lui arriver, vint au-devant d'eux, et leur dit : Qui cherchez-vous ?
5 They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.	5 Ils lui répondirent : Jésus de Nazareth. Jésus leur dit : C'est moi. Or Judas, qui le trahissait, se tenait là aussi avec eux.
6 As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground.	6 Lors donc que Jésus leur eut dit : C'est moi, ils reculèrent et tombèrent par terre.
7 Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.	7 Il leur demanda (donc) de nouveau : Qui cherchez-vous ? Et ils dirent : Jésus de Nazareth.
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way.	8 Jésus répondit : Je vous ai dit que c'est moi ; si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci.
9 That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.	9 Il dit cela, afin que s'accomplit cette parole qu'il avait dite : De ceux que vous m'avez donnés, je n'en ai perdu aucun.
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.	10 Alors Simon-Pierre, qui avait une épée, la tira, frappa le serviteur du grand prêtre, et lui coupa l'oreille droite. Ce serviteur s'appelait Malchus.
11 Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?	11 Mais Jésus dit à Pierre : Remets ton épée dans le fourreau. Ne boirai-je (donc) pas le calice que mon Père m'a donné ?
12 Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:	12 La cohorte, et le tribun, et les satellites des Juifs prirent donc Jésus et le lièrent.
13 And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.	13 Et ils l'emmenèrent d'abord chez Anne ; car il était le beau-père de Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là.
14 Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.	14 Caïphe était celui qui avait donné ce conseil aux Juifs : Il vaut mieux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple.
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.	15 Cependant, Simon-Pierre suivait Jésus, avec un autre disciple. Ce disciple était connu du grand prêtre, et il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du grand prêtre ;
16 But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter.	16 mais Pierre se tenait dehors, près de la porte. L'autre disciple, qui était connu du grand prêtre, sortit donc, et parla à la portière, et fit entrer Pierre.
17 The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not.	17 Cette servante, qui gardait la porte, dit à Pierre : N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cet homme ? Il dit : Je n'en suis pas.
18 Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.	18 Les serviteurs et les satellites se tenaient auprès du feu, parce qu'il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient. Pierre était aussi avec eux, et se chauffait.
19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.	19 Cependant, le grand prêtre interrogea Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.	20 Jésus lui répondit : J'ai parlé ouvertement au monde ; j'ai toujours enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le temple, où tous les Juifs s'assemblent, et je n'ai rien dit en secret.
21 Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said.	21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu ? Demande à ceux qui m'ont entendu ce que je leur ai dit ; eux, ils savent ce que j'ai dit.
22 And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?	22 Lorsqu'il eut dit cela, un des satellites, qui se trouvait là, donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant : Est-ce ainsi que tu réponds au grand prêtre ?
23 Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?	23 Jésus lui répondit : Si j'ai mal parlé, montre ce que j'ai dit de mal ; mais, si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu ?
24 And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.	24 Anne l'envoya lié à Caïphe, le grand prêtre.
25 And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.	25 Or Simon-Pierre était là debout, et se chauffait. On lui dit donc : N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples ? Il le nia, en disant : Je n'en suis pas.
26 One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?	26 Alors un des serviteurs du grand prêtre, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, lui dit : Est-ce que je ne t'ai pas vu dans le jardin avec lui ?
27 Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.	27 Pierre le nia de nouveau ; et aussitôt le coq chanta.
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.	28 Ils conduisirent donc Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire. C'était le matin, et ils n'entrèrent pas eux-mêmes dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller, et de pouvoir manger la pâque.
29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?	29 Pilate vint donc à eux dehors, et dit : Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme ?
30 They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.	30 Ils lui répondirent : Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré.
31 Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;	31 Pilate leur dit : Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et jugez-le selon votre loi. Mais les Juifs lui dirent : Il ne nous est pas permis de mettre personne à mort.
32 That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.	32 C'était afin que s'accomplît la parole que Jésus avait dite, lorsqu'il avait marqué de quelle mort il devait mourir.
33 Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?	33 Pilate entra donc de nouveau dans le prétoire, et appela Jésus ; et il lui dit : Es-tu le roi des Juifs ?
34 Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?	34 Jésus répondit : Dis-tu cela de toi-même, ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi ?
35 Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?	35 Pilate répondit : Est-ce que je suis Juif, moi ? Ta nation et les princes des prêtres t'ont livré à moi ; qu'as-tu fait ?
36 Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.	36 Jésus répondit : Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde. Si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes serviteurs auraient combattu, pour que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs ; mais (je l'assure, note) mon royaume n'est pas d'ici.
37 Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.	37 Pilate lui dit alors : Tu es donc roi ? Jésus répondit : Tu le dis, je suis Roi. Voici pourquoi je suis né, et pourquoi je suis venu dans le monde : pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est de la vérité, écoute ma voix.
38 Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him.	38 Pilate lui dit : Qu'est-ce que la vérité ? Et ayant dit cela, il sortit de nouveau, pour aller auprès des Juifs. Et il leur dit : Je ne trouve en lui aucune cause de condamnation (mort).
39 But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?	39 Mais, c'est la coutume que je vous délivre quelqu'un à la fête de Pâque ; voulez-vous donc que je vous délivre le roi des Juifs ?
40 Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.	40 Alors, de nouveau, ils crièrent tous en disant : Pas celui-ci, mais Barabbas. Or Barabbas était un brigand.
