1 When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.	1 Detto questo, Gesù andò con i suoi discepoli oltre il torrente Cedron, dov'era un orto, in cui entrò con essi.
2 And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.	2 Or anche Giuda che lo tradiva conosceva quel luogo, perchè spesso Gesù vi si ritirava coi suoi discepoli.
3 Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.	3 Giuda pertanto, avuta la coorte e delle guardie dai principi dei sacerdoti e dai Farisei, andò là con lanterne e torce e armi.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?	4 Ma Gesù che sapeva tutto quel che doveva accadere, si fece avanti e chiese loro: Chi cercate?
5 They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.	5 Gli risposero: Gesù Nazareno. E Gesù a loro: Son io. Ed era con essi anche Giuda, il traditore.
6 As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground.	6 Ma appena Gesù ebbe detto loro: Son io, diedero indietro e stramazzarono per terra.
7 Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.	7 Di nuovo adunque domandò loro: Chi cercate? E quelli: Gesù Nazareno.
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way.	8 Rispose Gesù: Ve l'ho detto che son io; se dunque cercate me, lasciate che questi se ne vadano.
9 That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.	9 Affinchè s'adempisse la parola detta da lui: Di quelli che mi hai affidati non ho perduto nessuno.
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.	10 Ma Simon Pietro, avendo in mano una spada, la sfoderò e colpì un servo del pontefice e gli portò via l'orecchio destro. Quel servo si chiamava Malco.
11 Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?	11 Allora Gesù disse a Pietro: Rimetti la tua spada nel fodero, rifiuterò io di bere il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?
12 Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:	12 Pertanto la coorte, il tribuno e le guardie dei Giudei afferrarono Gesù e, legatolo,
13 And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.	13 lo menarono prima da Anna, perchè era suocero di Caifa, il quale era Pontefice di quell'anno.
14 Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.	14 Caifa poi era quello che aveva dato ai Giudei il consiglio: Torna conto che un l'uomo solo muoia pel popolo.
15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.	15 Teneva dietro a Gesù Simon Pietro ed un altro discepolo. E quell'altro discepolo, essendo noto al Pontefice, entrò con Gesù nell'atrio del Pontefice.
16 But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter.	16 Pietro invece restò fuori della porta. Ma uscì l'altro discepolo, noto al Pontefice, e, parlato con la portinaia, fece entrar Pietro.
17 The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not.	17 Disse però la serva portinaia a Pietro: Forse anche tu sei dei discepoli di quell'uomo? Egli rispose: Non lo sono.
18 Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.	18 Ora i servi o le guardie stavano al fuoco a scaldarsi, perchè era freddo, ed anche Pietro stava con loro a scaldarsi.
19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.	19 Il Pontefice adunque interrogò Gesù riguardo ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina.
20 Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.	20 Gesù gli rispose: Io ho parlato, in pubblico, al mondo, io ho sempre insegnato nelle sinagoghe, e nel tempio, dove s'adunan tutti i Giudei, e niente ho detto in segreto.
21 Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said.	21 Perchè interroghi me? Interroga quelli che mi hanno udito, su quel che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno cosa abbia detto.
22 And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?	22 Appena egli ebbe pronunziate queste parole, una delle guardie che gli stava accanto diede uno schiaffo a Gesù dicendo: Così rispondi al Pontefice?
23 Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?	23 Gesù gli replicò: Se ho parlato male, dimostramelo, e se bene, perchè mi percuoti?
24 And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.	24 Anna lo mandò legato a Caifa sommo sacerdote.
25 And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.	25 Frattanto Simon Pietro stava a riscaldarsi. E gli dissero: Non sei dei suoi discepoli anche tu? Egli negò dicendo: No.
26 One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?	26 Ma uno dei servi del gran sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva tagliato l'orecchio, gli disse: Non t'ho visto io con lui nell'orto?
27 Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.	27 Pietro però negò di nuovo e subito cantò il gallo.
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.	28 Poi menarono Gesù dalla casa di Caifa al pretorio. Era di mattina presto, ed essi non entrarono nel pretorio per non contaminarsi e poter mangiare la Pasqua.
29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?	29 Uscì adunque Pilato fuori, davanti a loro e disse: Che accusa portate contro quest'uomo?
30 They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.	30 Gli risposero: Se non fosse un malfattore non te lo avremmo consegnato.
31 Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;	31 Replicò loro Pilato: Pigliatelo voi, e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge. Ma i Giudei risposero: Non abbiamo diritto di dar morte ad alcuno.
32 That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.	32 Affinchè s'adempissero le parole di Gesù colle quali significò di qual morte doveva morire.
33 Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?	33 Pertanto Pilato rientrò nel pretorio e chiamato Gesù gli disse: Sei tu il re dei Giudei?
34 Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?	34 Gesù gli rispose: Questo lo dici da te stesso, o altri te l'hanno detto di me?
35 Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?	35 Disse Pilato: Son forse Giudeo? la tua nazione ed i capi dei sacerdoti ti han messo nelle mie mani, che hai fatto?
36 Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.	36 Rispose Gesù: Il mio regno non è di questo mondo: se fosse di questo mondo il mio regno, i miei ministri, certo, l'otterebbero perché non fossi dato in mano dei Giudei; ma il regno mio non è di quaggiù.
37 Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.	37 Dunque sei re? gli disse Pilato. Gesù rispose: Tu lo dici, io son re. Son nato per questo, e per questo son venuto al mondo a rendere testimonianza alla verità. Chi è per la verità ascolta la mia voce.
38 Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him.	38 Gli domandò Pilato: Che cos'è la verità? E detto questo uscì di nuovo davanti ai Giudei a dir loro: Io non trovo in lui colpa alcuna.
39 But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?	39 Ma siccome è uso che vi liberi uno per la Pasqua, volete dunque che vi metta in libertà il re dei Giudei?
40 Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.	40 Ma tutti di nuovo gridarono, dicendo: Non lui, ma Barabba. E Barabba era un assassino.
