DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,1 While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.
And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.2 He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.
And going into one of the ships that was Simon's, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship.3 Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.4 After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."
And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have labored all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net.5 Simon said in reply, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets."
And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke.6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.
And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking.7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking.
Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."
For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken.9 For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him,
And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.10 and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men."
And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him.11 When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.
And it came to pass, when he was ina certain city, behold a man full of leprosy, who seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.12 Now there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where he was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said, "Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean."
And stretching forth his hand, he touched him, saying: I will. Be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.13 Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, "I do will it. Be made clean." And the leprosy left him immediately.
And he charged him that he should tell no man, but, Go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.14 Then he ordered him not to tell anyone, but "Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them."
But the fame of him went abroad the more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.15 The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments,
And he retired into the desert, and prayed.16 but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them.17 One day as Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with him for healing.
And behold, men brought in a bed a man, who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.18 And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set (him) in his presence.
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus.19 But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus.
Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.20 When he saw their faith, he said, "As for you, your sins are forgiven."
And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?21 Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask themselves, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who but God alone can forgive sins?"
And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts?22 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them in reply, "What are you thinking in your hearts?
Which is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?23 Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?
But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins''--he said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home."
And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.25 He stood up immediately before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God.
And all were astonished; and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things to day.26 Then astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck with awe, they said, "We have seen incredible things today."
And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said to him: Follow me.27 After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me."
And leaving all things, he rose up and followed him.28 And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him.
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house; and there was a great company of publicans, and of others, that were at table with them.29 Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them.
But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?30 The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick.31 Jesus said to them in reply, "Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance.32 I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners."
And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink?33 And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink."
To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast, whilst the bridegroom is with them?34 Jesus answered them, "Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days.35 But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days."
And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old.36 And he also told them a parable. "No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottle: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost.37 Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined.
But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.38 Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.
And no man drinking old, hath presently a mind to new: for he saith, The old is better.39 (And) no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, 'The old is good.'"
