1 And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Ezechias, that Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came up against all the fenced cities of Juda, and took them.	1 Im vierzehnten Jahre des Königs Hiskia zog Sanherib, der König von Assur, gegen alle befestigten Städte Judas und nahm sie ein.
2 And the king of the Assyrians sent Rabsaces from Lachis to Jerusalem, to king Ezechias with a great army, and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the way of the fuller's held.	2 Der König von Assur sandte von Lachis aus den Obermundschenk mit einer großen Streitmacht zum König Hiskia nach Jerusalem. Er nahm Aufstellung an der Wasserleitung des oberen Teiches, an der Straße des Walkerfeldes.
3 And there went out to him Eliacim the son of Helcias, who was over the house, and Sobna the scribe, and Joahe the son of Asaph the recorder.	3 Da gingen der Palastvorsteher Eljakim, der Sohn des Hiskia, der Staatsschreiber Sebna und der Kanzler Joach, der Sohn des Asaph, zu ihm hinaus.
4 And Rabsaces said to them: Tell Ezechias: Thus saith the great king, the king of the Assyrians: What is this confidence wherein thou trustest?	4 Der Obermundschenk aber sprach zu ihnen: "Sagt doch Hiskia: So spricht der Großkönig, der König von Assur: Was ist das für ein Vertrauen, das du hegst?
5 Or with what counsel or strength dost thou prepare for war? on whom dost thou trust, that thou art revolted from me?	5 Du denkst wohl, bloßes Lippengerede sei schon Rat und Stärke für den Krieg; nun, wem vertraust du denn eigentlich, daß du dich wider mich empört hast?
6 Lo thou trustest upon this broken staff of a reed, upon Egypt: upon which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharao king or Egypt to all that trust in him.	6 Siehe, du vertrautest auf jenen zerknickten Rohrstab, auf Ägypten, der jedem, der sich darauf stützt, in die Hand eindringt und sie durchbohrt. So handelt Pharao, der Ägypterkönig, an allen, die sich auf ihn verlassen.
7 But if thou wilt answer me: We trust in the Lord our God: is it not he whose high places and altars Ezechias hath taken away, and hath said to Juda and Jerusalem: You shall worship before this altar?	7 Falls ihr mir nun aber erwidert: "Auf den Herrn, unsern Gott, vertrauen wir", dann erwägt: Ist nicht gerade er es, dessen Höhenheiligtümer und Altäre Hiskia entfernt hat? Er befahl Juda und Jerusalem: "Nur vor diesem Altar sollt ihr anbeten!"
8 And now deliver thyself up to my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give thee two thousand horses, and thou wilt not be able on thy part to find riders for them.	8 Nun aber, geht doch mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assur, eine Wette ein: zweitausend Pferde gebe ich dir, wenn du nur die Reiter dazu stellen kannst.
9 And how wilt thou stand against the face of the judge of one place, of the least of my master's servants? But if thou trust in Egypt, in chariots and in horsemen:	9 Wie wolltest du auch nur einen einzigen Anführer von den geringsten Knechten meines Gebieters in die Flucht schlagen? Doch du vertraust ja auf Ägypten wegen der Kriegswagen und deren Besatzung!
10 And am I now come up without the Lord against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me: Go up against this land, and destroy it.	10 Und außerdem, bin ich etwa ohne Zutun des Herrn wider dieses Land gezogen? Der Herr hat es mir vielmehr gesagt: Ziehe hinauf gegen dieses Land, und verwüste es!"
11 And Eliacim, and Sobna, and Joahe said to Rabsaces: Speak to thy servants in the Syrian tongue: for we understand it: speak not to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people, that are upon the wall.	11 Da baten Eljakim, Sebna und Joach den Obermundschenk: "Rede doch mit deinen Knechten aramäisch, denn wir verstehen es! Rede aber nicht judäisch mit uns vor den Ohren des Volkes, das auf der Mauer steht!"
12 And Rabsaces said to them: Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee, to speak all these words; and not rather to the men that sit on the wall; that they may eat their own dung, and drink their urine with you?	12 Der Obermundschenk aber erwiderte ihnen: "Hat mich mein Gebieter nur zu deinem Herrn und zu dir geschickt, um dieses zu sagen, und nicht auch zu den Männern, die auf der Mauer sitzen und schließlich mit euch zusammen ihren eigenen Kot essen und ihren Harn trinken müssen?"
13 Then Rabsaces stood, and cried out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said: Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians.	13 Da trat der Obermundschenk vor, rief mit lauter Stimme auf judäisch und sprach: "Höret die Worte des Großkönigs, des Königs von Assur!
14 Thus saith the king: Let not Ezechias deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you.	14 So spricht der König: Hiskia soll euch nicht betören; denn er kann euch nicht retten!
15 And let not Ezechias make you trust in the Lord, saying: The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.	15 Hiskia soll euer Vertrauen nicht auf den Herrn lenken mit den Worten: "Ganz sicher wird der Herr uns erretten; diese Stadt wird nicht in die Gewalt des Königs von Assur überliefert werden."
16 Do not hearken to Ezechias: for thus said the king of the Assyrians: Do with me that which is for your advantage, and come out to me, and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his dg tree, and drink ye every one the water of his cistern,	16 Hört nicht auf Hiskia; denn so spricht der König von Assur: Trefft doch mit mir eine Vereinbarung, lauft zu mir über! Jeder kann sich dann von seinem Weinstock und von seinem Feigenbaum ernähren und von seinem eigenen Zisternenwasser trinken,
17 Till I come and take you away to a land, like to your own, a land of corn and of wine, a land of bread and vineyards.	17 bis daß ich komme und euch in ein Land herübernehme, das eurem Lande gleichwertig ist, in ein Land voll Getreide und Most, ein Land voll Brot und Weinbergen.
18 Neither let Ezechias trouble you, saying: The Lord will deliver us. Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians?	18 Hiskia soll euch nicht betrügen, indem er spricht: "Der Herr wird uns erretten!" Haben denn etwa die einzelnen Götter der Völker ihr Land aus der Gewalt des Königs von Assur errettet?
19 Where is the god of Emath and of Arphad? where is the god of Sepharvaim? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?	19 Wo blieben denn die Götter von Hamat und Arpad? Wo die Götter von Sepharwajim? Haben sie etwa Samaria aus meiner Gewalt errettet?
20 Who is there among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered his country out of my hand, that the Lord may deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?	20 Wer unter allen Göttern jener Länder hat denn sein Land aus meiner Gewalt errettet? Und da soll der Herr Jerusalem aus meiner Gewalt erretten?"
21 And they held their peace, and answered him not a word. For the king had commanded, saying: answer him not.	21 Da schwieg man und antwortete ihm kein Wort; denn so lautete der Befehl des Königs: "Ihr sollt ihm nichts entgegnen!"
22 And Eliacim the son of Helcias, that was over the house, and Sobna the scribe, and Joahe the son of Asaph the recorder, went in to Ezechias with their garments rent, and told him the words of Rabsaces.	22 Dann begaben sich der Palastvorsteher Eljakim, der Sohn des Hilkia, der Staatsschreiber Sebna und der Kanzler Joach, der Sohn Asaphs, zu Hiskia. Ihre Kleider hatten sie zerrissen, und sie berichteten ihm von den Reden des Obermundschenken.
