DOUAI-RHEIMSKING JAMES BIBLE
He that seeketh to revenge himself, shall find vengeance from the Lord, and he will surely keep his sins in remembrance.1 He that revengeth shall find vengeance from the Lord, and he will surely keep his sins [in remembrance.]
Forgive thy neighbour if he hath hurl thee: and then shall thy sins be forgiven to thee when thou prayest.2 Forgive thy neighbour the hurt that he hath done unto thee, so shall thy sins also be forgiven when thou prayest.
Man to man reserveth anger, and doth he seek remedy of God?3 One man beareth hatred against another, and doth he seek pardon from the Lord?
He hath no mercy on a man like himself, and doth he entreat for his own sins?4 He sheweth no mercy to a man, which is like himself: and doth he ask forgiveness of his own sins?
He that is but flesh, nourisheth anger, and doth he ask forgiveness of God? who shall obtain pardon for his sins?5 If he that is but flesh nourish hatred, who will intreat for pardon of his sins?
Remember thy last things, and let enmity cease:6 Remember thy end, and let enmity cease; [remember] corruption and death, and abide in the commandments.
For corruption and death hang over in his commandments.7 Remember the commandments, and bear no malice to thy neighbour: [remember] the covenant of the Highest, and wink at ignorance.
Remember the fear of God, and be not angry with thy neighbour.8 Abstain from strife, and thou shalt diminish thy sins: for a furious man will kindle strife,
Remember the covenant of the most High, and overlook the ignorance of thy neighbour.9 A sinful man disquieteth friends, and maketh debate among them that be at peace.
Refrain from strife, and thou shalt diminish thy sine:10 As the matter of the fire is, so it burneth: and as a man's strength is, so is his wrath; and according to his riches his anger riseth; and the stronger they are which contend, the more they will be inflamed.
For a passionate man kindleth strife, and a sinful man will trouble his friends, and bring in debate in the midst of them that are at peace.11 An hasty contention kindleth a fire: and an hasty fighting sheddeth blood.
For as the wood of the forest is, so the fire burneth: and as a man's strength is, so shall his anger be, and according to his riches he shall increase his anger.12 If thou blow the spark, it shall burn: if thou spit upon it, it shall be quenched: and both these come out of thy mouth.
A hasty contention kindleth a fire: and a hasty quarrel sheddeth blood: and a tongue that beareth witness bringeth death.13 Curse the whisperer and doubletongued: for such have destroyed many that were at peace.
If thou blow the spark, it shall burn as a fire: and if thou spit upon it, it shall be quenched: both come out of the mouth.14 A backbiting tongue hath disquieted many, and driven them from nation to nation: strong cities hath it pulled down, and overthrown the houses of great men.
The whisperer and the double tongued is accursed: for he hath troubled many that were at peace.15 A backbiting tongue hath cast out virtuous women, and deprived them of their labours.
The tongue of a third person hath disquieted many, and scattered them from nation to nation.16 Whoso hearkeneth unto it shall never find rest, and never dwell quietly.
It hath destroyed the strong cities of the rich, and hath overthrown the houses of great men.17 The stroke of the whip maketh marks in the flesh: but the stroke of the tongue breaketh the bones.
It hath cut in pieces the forces of people, and undone strong nations.18 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword: but not so many as have fallen by the tongue.
The tongue of a third person hath cast out valiant women, and deprived them of their labours.19 Well is he that is defended through the venom thereof; who hath not drawn the yoke thereof, nor hath been bound in her bands.
He that hearkeneth to it, shall never have rest, neither shall he have a friend in whom he may repose.20 For the yoke thereof is a yoke of iron, and the bands thereof are bands of brass.
The stroke of a whip maketh a blue mark: but the stroke of the tongue will break the bones.21 The death thereof is an evil death, the grave were better than it.
Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not so many as have perished by their own tongue.22 It shall not have rule over them that fear God, neither shall they be burned with the flame thereof.
Blessed is he that is defended from a wicked tongue, that hath not passed into the wrath thereof, and that hath not drawn the yoke thereof, and hath not been bound in its bands.23 Such as forsake the Lord shall fall into it; and it shall burn in them, and not be quenched; it shall be sent upon them as a lion, and devour them as a leopard.
For its yoke is a yoke of iron: and its bands are bands of brass.24 Look that thou hedge thy possession about with thorns, and bind up thy silver and gold,
The death thereof is a most evil death: and hell is preferable to it.25 And weigh thy words in a balance, and make a door and bar for thy mouth.
Its continuance shall not be for a long time, but it shall possess the ways of the unjust: and the just shall not be burnt with its flame.26 Beware thou slide not by it, lest thou fall before him that lieth in wait.
They that forsake God shall fall into it, and it shall burn in them, and shall not be quenched, and it shall be sent upon them as a lion, and as a leopard it shall tear them.
Hedge in thy ears with thorns, hear not a wicked tongue, and make doors and bars to thy mouth.
Melt down thy gold and silver, and make a balance for thy words, and a just bridle for thy mouth:
And take heed lest thou slip with thy tongue, and fall in the sight of thy enemies who lie in wait for thee, and thy fall be incurable unto death.
