1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.	1 J’ai pensé de nouveau à tous ceux qu’on opprime sous le soleil. Voici les pleurs des opprimés, et nul ne les console; ils souffrent la violence de leurs oppresseurs, et personne pour leur venir en aide!
2 And I praised the dead rather than the living:	2 Je féliciterais le mort de ce qu’il est mort, plutôt que le vivant pour être encore en vie.
3 And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.	3 Et plus heureux que l’un et l’autre, celui qui n’existe pas encore, car il n’a pas vu tout le mal qui se fait sous le soleil.
4 Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.	4 Si je regarde toute la peine que les hommes se donnent, toute la course au succès, ce n’est que jalousie de l’un envers l’autre. Tout cela est insensé, on court après le vent!
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:	5 Le sot qui se croise les bras, dévore sa propre chair.
6 Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.	6 Mais jouir du repos quand une main est pleine vaut mieux que le tourment pour remplir l’autre main.
7 Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:	7 Car j’ai vu sous le soleil une autre absurdité:
8 There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.	8 Voici un homme seul, il n’a personne, ni fils ni frère, et il n’en finit pas de s’exténuer au travail, jamais il n’est assez riche. Mais pour qui est-ce que je peine, pour qui ces privations? Voilà une mauvaise affaire: on ne tient rien.
9 It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:	9 Il vaut mieux être deux que seul: le travail rendra mieux.
10 If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.	10 Si l’un tombe, son compagnon le relèvera. Celui qui est seul, malheur à lui s’il tombe: personne ne le relèvera.
11 And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?	11 De même, si l’on se couche à deux on se réchauffe; personne ne réchauffe celui qui est seul.
12 And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.	12 Seul, on peut être agressé, à deux on fera face; et si le fil est triple, il ne cèdera pas facilement.
13 Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.	13 Mieux vaut un garçon pauvre et de bon sens qu’un roi vieux et sot, qui ne sait plus se faire conseiller.
14 Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.	14 Et cela, même s’il est passé de la prison au pouvoir, même s’il est né comme le dernier de tous dans le royaume.
15 I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.	15 J’ai vu tous les vivants qui s’agitent sous le soleil prendre parti pour le nouveau, pour le jeune qui prenait la succession.
16 The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.	16 La foule n’en finissait pas, de tous ceux qui venaient lui rendre hommage. Un jour, pourtant, on ne sera plus content de lui. Voilà encore des choses qui ne se tiennent pas: on court après le vent.
17 Keep thy foot, when thou goest into the house of God, and draw nigh to hear. For much better is obedience, than the victims of fools, who know not what evil they do.	17 Prends garde à ta démarche, quand tu vas à la Maison de Dieu. Présente l’offrande comme un homme averti, non comme les sots: ils offrent le sacrifice et ils ne voient pas qu’ils font le mal.
