Job 4

DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?2 If we say something to you, wil you bear with us? Who in any case could refrain from speaking now?
Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:3 You have schooled many others, giving strength to feeble hands;
Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:4 your words supported any who wavered and strengthened every failing knee.
But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.5 And now your turn has come, and you lose patience, at the first touch on yourself you are overwhelmed!
Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?6 Does not your piety give you confidence, and your integrity of life give you hope?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?7 Can you recal anyone guiltless that perished? Where then have the honest been wiped out?
On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,8 I speak from experience: those who plough iniquity and sow disaster, reap just that.
Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.9 Under the breath of God, they perish: a blast of his anger, and they are destroyed;
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:10 the lion's roars, his savage growls, like the fangs of a lion cub, are broken off.
The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.11 The lion dies for lack of prey and the lioness's whelps are dispersed.
Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.12 I have received a secret revelation, a whisper has come to my ears;
In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,13 by night when dreams confuse the mind and slumber lies heavy on everyone,
Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:14 a shiver of horror ran through me and fil ed al my bones with fright.
And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.15 A breath slid over my face, the hairs of my body bristled.
There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:16 Someone stood there -- I did not know his face, but the form stayed there before my eyes. Silence --then I heard a voice,
Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?17 'Can a mortal seem upright to God, would anybody seem pure in the presence of his Maker?
Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:18 God cannot rely even on his own servants, even with his angels he finds fault.
How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?19 What then of those who live in houses of clay, who are founded on dust?
From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.20 They are crushed as easily as a moth, between morning and evening they are ground to powder. Theyvanish for ever, with no one to bring them back.
And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.21 Their tent-peg is snatched from them, and they die devoid of wisdom.'
