1 Now when Esdras was thus praying, and beseeching, and weeping, and lying before the temple of God, there was gathered to him of Israel an exceeding great assembly of men and women and children, and the people wept with much lamentation.	1 Or mentre Esdra stava prostrato dinanzi al tempio di Dio a pregare, implorare e piangere, si radunò intorno a lui una grandissima moltitudine d'Israele, di uomini, di donne, di fanciulli, e il popolo si mise a piangere dirottamente.
2 And Sechenias the son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam answered, and said to Esdras: We have sinned against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: and now if there be repentance in Israel concerning this,	2 Allora Sechenia figlio di Iehiel, dei figli di Elam, prese a dire a Esdra: « Noi abbiamo prevaricato contro il nostro Dio, prendendo in mogli donne straniere di questi popoli dei paese; ma ora, giacché Israele se ne pente,
3 Let us make a covenant with the Lord our God, to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the will of the Lord, and of them that fear the commandment of the Lord our God: let it be done according to the law.	3 facciamo un patto col Signore Dio nostro: di rimandare tutte queste donne e figli nati da esse, secondo la volontà del Signore, e di tutti quelli che temono il comando del Signore Dio nostro: si faccia secondo la legge.
4 Arise, it is thy part to give orders, and we will be with thee: take courage, and do it.	4 Alzati, sta a te decidere: noi siam con te: fatti animo e agisci ».
5 So Esdras arose, and made the chiefs of the priests and of the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word, and they swore.	5 Allora Esdra, alzatosi, scongiurò i principi dei sacerdoti e dei leviti e tutto Israele a far secondo quanto era stato detto. Ed essi giurarono.
6 And Esdras rose up from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliasib, and entered in thither: he ate no bread, and drank no water: for he mourned for the transgression of them that were come out of the captivity.	6 Poi Esdra, levatosi dinanzi alla casa di Dio, andò alla camera di Iohanan figlio di Eliasib, ed entratovi, non mangiò nè pane nè bevve acqua, perchè piangeva la trasgressione di quelli tornati dalla schiavitù.
7 And proclamation was made in Juda and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should assemble together into Jerusalem.	7 Fu bandito in Giuda e in Gerusalemme a tutti i figli della trasmigrazione, che si adunassero in Gerusalemme,
8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the ancients, all his substance should be taken away, and he should be cast out of the company of them that were returned from captivity.	8 e che chiunque non fosse venuto nel termine di tre giorni, secondo il consiglio dei principi e degli anziani, avrebbe confiscato ogni avere, e sarebbe escluso dall'assemblea della trasmigrazione.
9 Then all the men of Juda, and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within three days, in the ninth month, the twentieth day of the month: and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of the sin, and the rain.	9 Così dentro tre giorni furono adunati in Gerusalemme tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino: ciò avvenne nel nono mese, ai venti del mese. Tutto il popolo stette fermo sulla piazza della casa di Dio, tremante a causa del peccato e delle pioggie.
10 And Esdras the priest stood up, and said to them: You have transgressed, and taken strange wives, to add to the sine of Israel.	10 Allora il sacerdote Esdra si alzò e disse: « Voi avete peccato sposando donne straniere, e aggiunto questo ai delitti d'Israele.
11 And now make confession to the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from your strange wives.	11 Or dunque date gloria al Signore Dio dei padri vostri, fate ciò che gli piace; separatevi dai popoli del paese e dalle mogli straniere ».
12 And all the multitude answered and said with a loud voice: According to thy word unto us, so be it done.	12 Tutta la moltitudine rispose e disse ad alta voce: « Si faccia secondo la tua parola;
13 But as the people are many, and it is time of rain, and me are not able to stand without, and it is not a work of one day or two, (for we have exceedingly sinned in this matter,)	13 ma siccome il popolo è numeroso, è il tempo delle piogge, e non possiamo stare allo scoperto, e l'affare non è d'un giorno o due, avendo noi peccato molto in questa materia,
14 Let rulers be appointed in all the multitude: and in all our cities, let them that have taken strange wives come at the times appointed, and with them the ancients and the judges of every city, until the wrath of our God be turned away from us for this sin.	14 siano stabiliti dei principi in tutta la moltitudine, e tutti quelli che nelle nostre città hanno sposate donne straniere, vengano nei tempi fissati con i giudici e gli anziani di ciascuna città, finché non sia stornata da noi l'ira del nostro Dio per questo peccato ».
15 Then Jonathan the son of Azahel, and Jaasia the son of Thecua were appointed over this, and Mesollam and Sebethai, Levites, helped them:	15 Furon costituiti sopra tale affare Ionatan figlio di Azahel e Iaasia figlio di Tecue, aiutati dai leviti Mesollam e Sebetai.
16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Esdras the priest, and the men heads of the families in the houses of their fathers, and all by their names, went and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.	16 E i figli della trasmigrazione così fecero. Andarono il sacerdote Esdra e i principi delle famiglie, secondo le casate dei padri, tutti designati per nome, e s'assisero al primo del decimo mese, per informarsi della cosa.
17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.	17 Finirono di numerare tutti quelli che avevano sposato donne straniere, il primo del primo mese.
18 And there were found among the sons of the priests that had taken strange wives: Of the sons of Josue the son of Josedec, and his brethren, Maasia, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Godolia.	18 Dei figli dei sacerdoti si trovarono questi che avevano sposate donne straniere. Dei figli di Giosuè: i figli di Iosedec e i suoi fratelli Maasia. Eliezer, Iarib e Godolia.
19 And they gave their hands to put away their wives, and to offer for their offence a ram of the flock.	19 Questi diedero la mano per mandar via le loro mogli, ed offrirono un montone del gregge per il loro delitto.
20 And of the sons of Emmer, Hanani, and Zebedia.	20 Dei figli di Emmer: Anani e Zebedia.
21 And of the sons of Harim, Maasia, and Elia, and Semeia, and Jehiel, and Ozias.	21 Dei figli di Arim: Maasia, Elia, Semola, lehiel, Ozia.
22 And of the sons of Pheshur, Elioenai, Maasia, Ismael, Nathanael, Jozabed, and Elasa.	22 Dei figli di Fesur: Elioena, Maasia, Ismaele. Natanaele, Iozabed, Elasa.
23 And of the sons of the Levites, Jozabed, and Semei, and Celaia, the same is Calita, Phataia, Juda, and Eliezer.	23 Dei figli dei leviti: Iozabed, Semei, Ceìaia, detto anche Calita, Fataia, Giuda, Eliezer.
24 And of the singing men, Elisiab: and of the porters, Sellum, and Telem, and	24 Dei cantori: Eliasib. Dei portinai: Sellum, Telem, Uri.
25 And of Israel, of the sons of Pharos, Remeia, and Jezia, and Melchia, and Miamin, and Eliezer, and Melchia, and Banea.	25 D'Israele: dei figli di Faros: Kemeia, Iezia, Melchia, Miamin, Eliezer, Melchia, Banca.
26 And of the sons of Elam, Mathania, Zacharias, annd Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jerimoth, and Elia.	26 Dei figli di Elam: Matania, Zaccaria, Iehiel, Abdi, Ierimot, Elia.
27 And of the sons of Zethua, Elioenai, Eliasib, Mathania, Jerimuth, and Zabad, and Aziaza.	27 Dei figli di Zetua: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matania, Ierimut, Zabad, Aziza.
28 And of the sons of Babai, Johanan, Hanania, Zabbai, Athalai:	28 Dei figli di Bebai: Iohanan, Anania, Zabbai, Atalai.
29 And of the sons of Bani, Mosollam, and Melluch, and Adaia, Jasub, and Seal, and Ramoth.	29 Dei figli di Bani: Mosollam, Meline, Adaia, Iasub, Saal, Ramot.
30 And of the sons of Phahath, Moab, Edna, and Chalal, Banaias, and Maasias, Mathanias, Beseleel, Bennui, and Manasse.	30 Dei figli di Faat Moab: Edna, Calai, Banaia Maasia, Matania, Bese Ieel, Bennui, Manasse.
31 And of the sons of Herem, Eliezer, Josue, Melchias, Semeias, Simeon,	31 Dei figli di Erem: Eliezer, Giosuè, Melchia, Semeia, Simeone,
32 Benjamin, Maloch, Samarias.	32 Beniamino, Maloc, Samarias.
33 And of the sons of Hasom, Mathanai, Mathatha, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jermai, Manasse, Semei.	33 Dei figli di Asom: Matanai, Malata, Zabad, Elifelet, fermai, Manasse, Semei.
34 Of the sons of Bani, Maaddi, Amran, and Uel,	34 Dei figli di Bani: Maad di, Amram, Vel,

44 All these had taken strange wives, and there were among them women that had borne children.	44 Tutti questi avevano sposate donne straniere, fra le quali ve ne furono di quelle che avevano partorito dei figli.
