1 Now when Esdras was thus praying, and beseeching, and weeping, and lying before the temple of God, there was gathered to him of Israel an exceeding great assembly of men and women and children, and the people wept with much lamentation.	1 Tout en pleurs et prosterné devant le Temple de Dieu, Esdras faisait cette prière et cette confession; une foule très nombreuse d’Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants, se rassembla autour de lui: le peuple pleurait bruyamment.
2 And Sechenias the son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam answered, and said to Esdras: We have sinned against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: and now if there be repentance in Israel concerning this,	2 Chekanyas fils de Yéhiel, l’un des fils d’Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: “Nous avons trahi notre Dieu en prenant des femmes étrangères parmi les peuples du pays, mais il y a encore de l’espoir pour Israël.
3 Let us make a covenant with the Lord our God, to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the will of the Lord, and of them that fear the commandment of the Lord our God: let it be done according to the law.	3 Nous allons nous engager devant notre Dieu, de façon solennelle, à renvoyer toutes nos femmes étrangères et les enfants qui en sont nés. Ainsi nous obéirons aux conseils de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent le commandement de notre Dieu. Oui, nous agirons selon la Loi!
4 Arise, it is thy part to give orders, and we will be with thee: take courage, and do it.	4 Lève-toi! Car la chose te regarde et nous sommes avec toi. Sois fort et mets-toi au travail.”
5 So Esdras arose, and made the chiefs of the priests and of the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word, and they swore.	5 Esdras se leva et fit jurer les chefs des prêtres et des lévites et tout Israël de faire comme on venait de le dire; ils le jurèrent.
6 And Esdras rose up from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliasib, and entered in thither: he ate no bread, and drank no water: for he mourned for the transgression of them that were come out of the captivity.	6 Esdras quitta le Temple de Dieu et alla dans la chambre de Yohanan, fils d’Élyachib, il passa là toute la nuit sans manger de pain et sans boire d’eau, car il était dans la tristesse à cause de l’infidélité des exilés.
7 And proclamation was made in Juda and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should assemble together into Jerusalem.	7 On proclama un avis dans Juda et dans Jérusalem à l’attention de tous ceux qui avaient été déportés: ils devaient se rassembler à Jérusalem.
8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the ancients, all his substance should be taken away, and he should be cast out of the company of them that were returned from captivity.	8 Si quelqu’un ne venait pas dans les trois jours - c’était l’avis des chefs et des anciens -, tous ses biens seraient voués à l’anathème et lui-même serait rejeté de la communauté des déportés.
9 Then all the men of Juda, and Benjamin gathered themselves together to Jerusalem within three days, in the ninth month, the twentieth day of the month: and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of the sin, and the rain.	9 Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent donc à Jérusalem le troisième jour; c’était le 20 du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple s’assit sur la place devant le Temple de Dieu. Les gens tremblaient à cause des événements, mais aussi parce qu’il pleuvait.
10 And Esdras the priest stood up, and said to them: You have transgressed, and taken strange wives, to add to the sine of Israel.	10 Alors le prêtre Esdras se leva et leur dit: “Vous avez été infidèles, vous avez épousé des femmes étrangères et vous avez augmenté la faute d’Israël.
11 And now make confession to the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from your strange wives.	11 Mais maintenant, confessez la vérité devant Yahvé, le Dieu de vos pères et faites ce qu’il vous demande: séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.”
12 And all the multitude answered and said with a loud voice: According to thy word unto us, so be it done.	12 Toute l’assemblée répondit d’une voix forte: “Tu as bien dit, il ne nous reste qu’à le faire.
13 But as the people are many, and it is time of rain, and me are not able to stand without, and it is not a work of one day or two, (for we have exceedingly sinned in this matter,)	13 Mais le peuple est nombreux et nous sommes à la saison des pluies, nous ne pouvons rester dehors et l’affaire ne se réglera pas en un jour ou deux. Nous sommes en effet nombreux à avoir commis ce péché.
14 Let rulers be appointed in all the multitude: and in all our cities, let them that have taken strange wives come at the times appointed, and with them the ancients and the judges of every city, until the wrath of our God be turned away from us for this sin.	14 Que nos chefs restent là pour toute la durée de l’assemblée: tous ceux qui dans nos villes ont épousé des femmes étrangères, viendront à la date qu’on leur fixera, et avec eux viendront les anciens de chaque ville et les juges, jusqu’à ce que l’on ait écarté de nous la colère de notre Dieu à ce sujet.”
15 Then Jonathan the son of Azahel, and Jaasia the son of Thecua were appointed over this, and Mesollam and Sebethai, Levites, helped them:	15 Seuls Yonathan, fils d’Azaël, et Yahzéyas, fils de Tikva, furent opposés à cette façon de faire; Méchoullam et le lévite Chabtaï les soutenaient.
16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Esdras the priest, and the men heads of the families in the houses of their fathers, and all by their names, went and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.	16 Mais les exilés firent comme on l’avait proposé; le prêtre Esdras choisit pour chaque maison des chefs de famille nommément désignés. Ils commencèrent à siéger le premier jour du dixième mois, pour examiner les cas,
17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.	17 et au premier jour du premier mois ils avaient achevé de régler le problème de ceux qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères.
18 And there were found among the sons of the priests that had taken strange wives: Of the sons of Josue the son of Josedec, and his brethren, Maasia, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Godolia.	18 Voici pour les prêtres la liste de ceux qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères: parmi les fils de Josué, fils de Yosadak et parmi ses frères: Maaséyas, Éliézer, Yarib et Guédalyas.
19 And they gave their hands to put away their wives, and to offer for their offence a ram of the flock.	19 Ils firent le serment de renvoyer leurs femmes et d’offrir un bélier en sacrifice de réparation pour leur péché;
20 And of the sons of Emmer, Hanani, and Zebedia.	20 parmi les fils d’Immer: Hanani et Zébadya;
21 And of the sons of Harim, Maasia, and Elia, and Semeia, and Jehiel, and Ozias.	21 parmi les fils de Harim: Maaséyas, Éliya, Chémayas, Yéhiel et Ouziya;
22 And of the sons of Pheshur, Elioenai, Maasia, Ismael, Nathanael, Jozabed, and Elasa.	22 parmi les fils de Pachéhour: Élyoénaï, Maaséyas, Ismaël, Nétanéel, Yozabad et Éléasa;
23 And of the sons of the Levites, Jozabed, and Semei, and Celaia, the same is Calita, Phataia, Juda, and Eliezer.	23 parmi les lévites: Yozabad, Chiméï, Kélaya - le même que Kélita -, Petahya, Yéhouda et Éliézer;
24 And of the singing men, Elisiab: and of the porters, Sellum, and Telem, and	24 parmi les chantres: Élyachib et Zakour; parmi les portiers: Challoum, Télem et Ouri;
25 And of Israel, of the sons of Pharos, Remeia, and Jezia, and Melchia, and Miamin, and Eliezer, and Melchia, and Banea.	25 et parmi les Israélites: des fils de Paréoch: Ramyas, Yiziyas, Malkiyas, Miyamin, Éléazar, Malkiyas et Bénayas;
26 And of the sons of Elam, Mathania, Zacharias, annd Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jerimoth, and Elia.	26 des fils d’Élam: Mattanyas, Zékaryas, Yehiel, Abdi, Yérémot et Éliya;
27 And of the sons of Zethua, Elioenai, Eliasib, Mathania, Jerimuth, and Zabad, and Aziaza.	27 des fils de Zattou: Élyoénaï, Élyachib, Mattanyas, Yérémot, Zabad et Aziza;
28 And of the sons of Babai, Johanan, Hanania, Zabbai, Athalai:	28 des fils de Bébaï: Yohanan, Hananyas, Zabaï, Atlaï;
29 And of the sons of Bani, Mosollam, and Melluch, and Adaia, Jasub, and Seal, and Ramoth.	29 des fils de Bigvaï: Méchoullam, Malouk, Yédaya, Yachoub, Yichal, Yérémot;
30 And of the sons of Phahath, Moab, Edna, and Chalal, Banaias, and Maasias, Mathanias, Beseleel, Bennui, and Manasse.	30 des fils de Pahat-Moab: Adna, Kelal, Bénayas, Maaséyas, Mattanyas, Besaléel, Binnouï et Menassé;
31 And of the sons of Herem, Eliezer, Josue, Melchias, Semeias, Simeon,	31 des fils de Harim: Éliézer, Yichiya, Malkiyas, Chémayas, Chiméon,
32 Benjamin, Maloch, Samarias.	32 Binyamin, Malouk, Chémarya;
33 And of the sons of Hasom, Mathanai, Mathatha, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jermai, Manasse, Semei.	33 des fils de Hachoum: Mattenaï, Mattatyas, Zabad, Élifélèt, Yerémaï, Menassé, Chiméï;
34 Of the sons of Bani, Maaddi, Amran, and Uel,	34 des fils de Bani: Maadaï, Amram, Yoël,
35 Baneas, and Badaias, Cheliau,	35 Bénayas, Bédyas, Kélayas,
36 Vania, Marimuth, and Eliasib,	36 Vanyas, Mérémot, Élyachib,
37 Mathanias, Mathania, and Jasi,	37 Mattanyas, Mattenaï et Yaasaï;
38 And Bani, and Bennui, Semei,	38 des fils de Binnouï: Chiméï,
39 And Salmias, and Nathan, and Adaias,	39 Chélémyas, Natan et Adayas;
40 And Mechnedebai, Sisai, Sarai,	40 des fils de Zakaï: Chachaï, Charaï,
41 Ezrel, and Selemiau, Semeria,	41 Azaréel, Chélémyas, Chémarya,
42 Sellum, Amaria, Joseph.	42 Challoum, Amarya, Yosef;
43 Of the sons of Nebo, Jehiel, Mathathias, Zabad, Zabina, Jeddu, and Joel, and Banaia.	43 des fils de Nébo: Yeïel, Mattityas, Zabad, Zebina, Yaddaï, Yoël, Bénayas.
44 All these had taken strange wives, and there were among them women that had borne children.	44 Tous ceux-là avaient épousé des femmes étrangères, ils les renvoyèrent avec leurs enfants.
