EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 ¡Miren cómo nos amó el Padre! Quiso que nos llamáramos hijos de Dios, y nosotros lo somos realmente. Si el mundo no nos reconoce, es porque no lo ha reconocido a él.	1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we would be called, and would become, the sons of God. Because of this, the world does not know us, for it did not know him.
2 Queridos míos, desde ahora somos hijos de Dios, y lo que seremos no se ha manifestado todavía. Sabemos que cuando se manifieste, seremos semejantes a él, porque lo veremos tal cual es.	2 Most beloved, we are now the sons of God. But what we shall be then has not yet appeared. We know that when he does appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
3 El que tiene esta esperanza en él, se purifica, así como él es puro.	3 And everyone who holds this hope in him, keeps himself holy, just as he also is holy.
4 El que comete el pecado comete también la iniquidad, porque el pecado es la iniquidad.	4 Everyone who commits a sin, also commits iniquity. For sin is iniquity.
5 Pero ustedes saben que él se manifestó para quitar el pecado, y que él no tiene pecado.	5 And you know that he appeared in order that he might take away our sins. For in him there is no sin.
6 El que permanece en él, no peca, y el que peca no lo ha visto ni lo ha conocido.	6 Everyone who abides in him does not sin. For whoever sins has not seen him, and has not known him.
7 Hijos míos, que nadie los engañe: el que practica la justicia es justo, como él mismo es justo.	7 Little sons, let no one deceive you. Whoever does justice is just, even as he also is just.
8 Pero el que peca procede del demonio, porque el demonio es pecador desde el principio. Y el Hijo de Dios se manifestó para destruir las obras del demonio.	8 Whoever commits sin is of the devil. For the devil sins from the beginning. For this reason, the Son of God appeared, so that he might eradicate the works of the devil.
9 El que ha nacido de Dios no peca, porque el germen de Dios permanece en él; y no puede pecar, porque ha nacido de Dios.	9 All those who have been born of God do not commit sin. For the offspring of God abides in them, and he is not able to sin, because he was born of God.
10 Los hijos de Dios y los hijos del demonio se manifiestan en esto: el que no practica la justicia no es de Dios, ni tampoco el que no ama a su hermano.	10 In this way, the sons of God are made manifest, and also the sons of the devil. Everyone who is not just, is not of God, as also anyone who does not love his brother.
11 La noticia que oyeron desde el principio es esta: que nos amemos los unos a los otros.	11 For this is the announcement that you heard from the beginning: that you should love one another.
12 No hagamos como Caín, que era del Maligno y mató a su hermano. ¿Y por qué lo mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, y las de su hermano, en cambio, eran justas.	12 Do not be like Cain, who was of the evil one, and who killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked, but his brother’s works were just.
13 No se extrañen, hermanos, si el mundo los aborrece.	13 If the world hates you, brothers, do not be surprised.
14 Nosotros sabemos que hemos pasado de la muerte a la Vida, porque amamos a nuestros hermanos. El que no ama permanece en la muerte.	14 We know that we have passed from death to life. For we love as brothers. Whoever does not love, abides in death.
15 El que odia a su hermano es un homicida, y ustedes saben que ningún homicida posee la Vida eterna.	15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding within him.
16 En esto hemos conocido el amor: en que él entregó su vida por nosotros. Por eso, también nosotros debemos dar la vida por nuestros hermanos.	16 We know the love of God in this way: because he laid down his life for us. And so, we must lay down our lives for our brothers.
17 Si alguien vive en la abundancia, y viendo a su hermano en la necesidad, le cierra su corazón, ¿cómo permanecerá en él el amor de Dios?	17 Whoever possesses the goods of this world, and sees his brother to be in need, and yet closes his heart to him: in what way does the love of God abide in him?
18 Hijitos míos, no amemos solamente con la lengua y de palabra, sino con obras y de verdad.	18 My little sons, let us not love in words only, but in works and in truth.
19 En esto conoceremos que somos de la verdad, y estaremos tranquilos delante de Dios	19 In this way, we will know that we are of the truth, and we will commend our hearts in his sight.
20 aunque nuestra conciencia nos reproche algo, porque Dios es más grande que nuestra conciencia y conoce todas las cosas.	20 For even if our heart reproaches us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows all things.
21 Queridos míos, si nuestro corazón no nos hace ningún reproche, podemos acercarnos a Dios con plena confianza,	21 Most beloved, if our heart does not reproach us, we can have confidence toward God;
22 y él nos concederá todo cuanto le pidamos, porque cumplimos sus mandamientos y hacemos lo que le agrada.	22 and whatever we shall request of him, we shall receive from him. For we keep his commandments, and we do the things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 Su mandamiento es este: que creamos en el nombre de su Hijo Jesucristo, y nos amemos los unos a los otros como él nos ordenó.	23 And this is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
24 El que cumple sus mandamientos permanece en Dios, y Dios permanece en él; y sabemos que él permanece en nosotros, por el Espíritu que nos ha dado.	24 And those who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And we know that he abides in us by this: by the Spirit, whom he has given to us.
