Josué 23

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Cuando ya hacía mucho tiempo que el Señor había concedido la paz a Israel, librándolo de todos los enemigos que tenía a su alrededor, Josué –que era un anciano de edad muy avanzada–	1 Many years later, after the LORD had given the Israelites rest from all their enemies round about them, and when Joshua was old and advanced in years,
2 convocó a todo Israel, a sus ancianos, a sus jefes, a sus jueces y a sus escribas, y les dijo: «Yo estoy viejo; ya tengo muchos años.	2 he summoned all Israel (including their elders, leaders, judges and officers) and said to them: "I am old and advanced in years.
3 Ustedes han visto cómo trató el Señor, su Dios, a todos esos pueblos a causa de ustedes, porque era el Señor, su Dios, el que combatía por ustedes.	3 You have seen all that the LORD, your God, has done for you against all these nations; for it has been the LORD, your God, himself who fought for you.
4 Ahora miren bien: yo les he sorteado como herencia para cada tribu tanto a las naciones que todavía quedan como a las que yo mismo exterminé, desde el Jordán hasta el gran mar Occidental.	4 Bear in mind that I have apportioned among your tribes as their heritage the nations that survive (as well as those I destroyed) between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west.
5 El Señor, su Dios, las dispersará delante de ustedes y las desposeerá de sus dominios, para que ustedes puedan tomar posesión de su tierra, conforme a la promesa que les hizo el Señor, su Dios.	5 The LORD, your God, will drive them out and dislodge them at your approach, so that you will take possession of their land as the LORD, your God, promised you.
6 Por eso, sean cada vez más constantes en observar y en cumplir todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés, sin desviarse de él ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda,	6 Therefore strive hard to observe and carry out all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, not straying from it in any way,
7 y sin mezclarse con esos pueblos que todavía quedan con ustedes. No invoquen el nombre de sus dioses ni juren por ellos; no los sirvan ni se postren ante ellos.	7 or mingling with these nations while they survive among you. You must not invoke their gods, or swear by them, or serve them, or worship them,
8 Por el contrario, manténganse fieles al Señor, su Dios, como lo han hecho hasta el día de hoy.	8 but you must remain loyal to the LORD, your God, as you have been to this day.
9 El Señor desposeyó delante de ustedes a naciones numerosas y fuertes; y hasta el presente, nadie ha podido resistirles.	9 At your approach the LORD has driven out large and strong nations, and to this day no one has withstood you.
10 Bastaba uno solo para perseguir a mil, porque el Señor, su Dios, era el que combatía por ustedes, como él mismo les había prometido.	10 One of you puts to flight a thousand, because it is the LORD, your God, himself who fights for you, as he promised you.
11 Por eso, pongan sumo cuidado en amar al Señor, su Dios.	11 Take great care, however, to love the LORD, your God.
12 Pero si se vuelven atrás y se unen al resto de esos pueblos que todavía quedan con ustedes; si establecen con ellos lazos de parentesco, mezclándose ustedes con ellos y ellos con ustedes,	12 For if you ever abandon him and ally yourselves with the remnant of these nations while they survive among you, by intermarrying and intermingling with them,
13 entonces, tengan la plena seguridad de que el Señor, su Dios, no seguirá desposeyendo a esas naciones delante de ustedes, y ellos serán para ustedes una red, un lazo, un látigo sobre sus costados, y aguijones en sus ojos, hasta que por fin desaparecerán de esta hermosa tierra que les dio el Señor, su Dios.	13 know for certain that the LORD, your God, will no longer drive these nations out of your way. Instead they will be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge for your sides and thorns for your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the LORD, your God, has given you.
14 Ya estoy a punto de irme por el camino que les toca recorrer a todos. Reconozcan entonces con todo su corazón y con toda su alma, que ni una sola de todas esas admirables promesas que les hizo el Señor, ha caído en el vacío: todas se han cumplido, y no falló ni una sola.	14 "Today, as you see, I am going the way of all men. So now acknowledge with your whole heart and soul that not one of all the promises the LORD, your God, made to you has remained unfulfilled. Every promise has been fulfilled for you, with not one single exception.
15 Pero así como se han cumplido todas las admirables promesas que les hizo el Señor, su Dios, también él atraerá sobre ustedes todas las amenazas, hasta exterminarlos de esta hermosa tierra que les dio el Señor, su Dios.	15 But just as every promise the LORD, your God, made to you has been fulfilled for you, so will he fulfill every threat, even so far as to exterminate you from this good land which the LORD, your God, has given you.
16 Si quebrantan la alianza del Señor, su Dios, la que él les impuso, y van a servir a otros dioses y a postrarse delante de ellos, la ira del Señor arderá contra ustedes, y desaparecerán muy pronto de la hermosa tierra que él les dio».	16 If you transgress the covenant of the LORD, your God, which he enjoined on you, serve other gods and worship them, the anger of the LORD will flare up against you and you will quickly perish from the good land which he has given you."
