EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El Señor dijo a Moisés:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 «Tienes que vengar a Israel de los madianitas, después irás a reunirte con los tuyos».	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 Entonces Moisés dijo al pueblo: «Que algunos de ustedes se equipen para el combate y ataquen a Madián, para ejecutar contra ellos la venganza del Señor.	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Deberán enviar al combate mil hombres por cada una de las tribus de Israel».	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 Entre las divisiones de Israel se reclutaron doce mil hombres equipados para la guerra, a razón de mil hombres por tribu,	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 y Moisés los envió al combate, junto con Pinjás, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, que llevaba consigo los vasos sagrados y las trompetas para lanzar el grito de guerra.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 Ellos pelearon contra Madián, como el Señor lo había ordenado a Moisés, y mataron a todos los varones.	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 Además de otras víctimas, mataron a los cinco reyes de Madián: Eví, Réquem, Sur, Jur y Reba. También pasaron al filo de la espada a Balaam hijo de Beor.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 Los israelitas tomaron cautivas a las mujeres y a los hijos de los madianitas, y se llevaron como botín todos sus animales, sus rebaños y sus bienes.	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 Además incendiaron las ciudades donde ellos habitaban y sus campamentos.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 Luego recogieron todo el botín –tanto hombres como animales–	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 y se lo llevaron a Moisés, al sacerdote Eleazar y a toda la comunidad de los israelitas, que estaban acampados en las estepas de Moab, junto al Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 Cuando Moisés, el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los jefes de la comunidad salieron a recibirlos fuera del campamento,	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 Moisés se irritó contra los comandantes del ejército y contra los oficiales de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados, que volvían de la expedición,	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 y les dijo: «¿Por qué han perdonado la vida a todas las mujeres?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Fueron ellas las que, por instigación de Balaam indujeron a los israelitas a ser infieles al Señor en el incidente de Peor, y por eso la comunidad del Señor fue azotada por la plaga.	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Por lo tanto, maten a todos los niños varones y a todas las mujeres que hayan tenido relaciones con un hombre.	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 Perdonen, en cambio, a las jóvenes que no hayan tenido relaciones con un hombre.	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 En cuanto a ustedes, quédense fuera del campamento durante siete días; y en cualquiera de ustedes o de los cautivos que haya matado a una persona o haya tocado un cadáver, deberá purificarse al tercero y al séptimo día.	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 También deberán purificar todas las prendas de vestir y todos los objetos de piel, de cuero de cabra o de madera».	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Entonces el sacerdote Eleazar dijo a las tropas de habían participado de la batalla: «Esta es una prescripción de la ley que el Señor dictó a Moisés: «Todo lo que resiste al fuego,	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 ya sea oro, plata, bronce, hierro, estaño o plomo,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 lo harán pasar por el fuego para que sea purificado, aunque también deberá ser purificado con agua lustral; en cambio, harán pasar sólo por el agua lo que no puede resistir al fuego.	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 Al séptimo día ustedes lavarán su ropa y quedarán puros. Después podrán entrar en el campamento».	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Luego el Señor dijo a Moisés:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 «Tú, el sacerdote Eleazar y los jefes de familia de la comunidad harán el inventario del botín que ha sido capturado, tanto hombres como animales.	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 Después lo repartirás, por partes iguales, entre los combatientes que participaron de la campaña y el resto de la comunidad.	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 Además, debes separar para el Señor, como tributo de los guerreros que han ido al combate, una vida de cada quinientas, tanto de las personas como del ganado mayor, de los asnos y del ganado menor.	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 Esto lo tomarás de la mitad que les corresponda y se lo entregarás al sacerdote Eleazar como un tributo para el Señor.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 De la mitad que corresponda a los demás israelitas, tanto de las personas como de los animales –del ganado mayor, de los asnos y del ganado menor– tomarás una vida por cada cincuenta y se las entregarás a los levitas que realizan tareas en la Morada del Señor».	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron lo que el Señor había ordenado.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 El total del botín –además de los despojos que habían recogido las tropas– ascendió a 675.000 cabezas de ganado menor,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 72.000 de ganado mayor,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 61.000 asnos,	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 y 32.000 personas, a saber, las jóvenes que no habían tenido relaciones con un hombre.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 Por lo tanto, la mitad correspondiente a los que habían participado de la campaña fueron 337.500 cabezas de ganado menor,	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 y el tributo para el Señor fue de 675;	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 36.000 cabezas de ganado mayor, y el tributo para el Señor, 72;	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 30.500 asnos, y el tributo para el Señor, 61.	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 Las personas fueron 16.000, y el tributo para el Señor, 32.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 Moisés entregó al sacerdote Eleazar el tributo recogido para el Señor, como él se lo había ordenado.	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 La parte correspondiente a los otros israelitas –que Moisés había tomado del botín de los combatientes–	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 sumó 337.500 cabezas de ganado menor,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 36.000 cabezas de ganado mayor,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 30.500 asnos,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 y 16.000 personas.	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 De esta mitad correspondiente a los israelitas, Moisés tomó cada uno de cada cincuenta hombres y animales, y se los entregó a los levitas que realizaban tareas en la Morada del Señor, como el Señor se lo había ordenado.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 Los comandantes de las tropas y los jefes de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados se acercaron a Moisés,	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 y el dijeron: «Hemos hechos el recuento de los soldados que están en nuestras órdenes y no falta ni uno solo.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Por eso hemos traído, como ofrenda al Señor, los objetos de oro que ha recogido cada uno: pulseras, brazaletes, anillos, aros y pendientes. Así se hará en favor nuestro el rito de expiación delante del Señor».	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 Entonces Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron de ellos todo ese oro, todas esas joyas.	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 El oro que los oficiales de los regimientos de mil y cien soldados ofrecieron como tributo al Señor, llegó a un total de dieciséis mil setecientos cincuenta siclos.	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 Entre la tropa, en cambio, cada uno guardó para sí lo que había recogido.	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de los oficiales, y lo llevaron a la Carpa del Encuentro, como memorial de los israelitas delante del Señor.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
