1 On his arrival in Jerusalem Rehoboam gathered together the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand seasoned warriors, to have them fight against Israel and restore the kingdom to him.	1 Roboam, étant arrivé à Jérusalem, rassembla toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de guerre choisis, pour combattre contre Israël et pour le remettre sous sa domination.
2 However, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, a man of God:	2 Mais le Seigneur adressa la parole à Séméias, homme de Dieu, et lui dit:
3 "Say to Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin:	3 Parlez à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, et à tout le peuple d'Israël qui est dans Juda et dans Benjamin.
4 'Thus says the LORD: You must not march out to fight against your brothers. Let every man return home, for what has occurred I have brought about.'" They obeyed this message of the LORD and gave up the expedition against Jeroboam.	4 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Vous ne vous mettrez pas en campagne, et vous ne combattrez pas contre vos frères. Que chacun s'en retourne en sa maison; car cela s'est fait par Ma volonté. Après qu'ils eurent entendu la parole du Seigneur, ils s'en retournèrent et ne marchèrent pas contre Jéroboam.
5 Rehoboam took up residence in Jerusalem and built fortified cities in Judah.	5 Or Roboam établit sa demeure à Jérusalem, et bâtit des villes fortes dans Juda.
6 He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,	6 Il bâtit Bethléem, et Etam, et Thécué,
7 Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,	7 et Bethsur, Socho, Odollam,
8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,	8 et Geth, Marésa, et Ziph,
9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,	9 et aussi Aduram, Lachis et Azécha,
10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron; these were fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.	10 Saraa, Aïalon, Hébron, qui étaient dans Juda et Benjamin, et il en fit des places très fortes.
11 Then he strengthened the fortifications and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil and wine.	11 Et quand il les eut fermées de murailles, il y mit des gouverneurs et y fit des magasins de vivres, c'est-à-dire d'huile et de vin.
12 In every city were shields and spears, and he made them very strong. Thus Judah and Benjamin remained his.	12 Il établit dans chaque ville un arsenal qu'il remplit de boucliers et de piques, et il fortifia ces places avec grand soin. Ainsi, il régna sur Juda et sur Benjamin.
13 Now the priests and Levites throughout Israel presented themselves to him from all parts of their land,	13 Les prêtres et les lévites qui étaient dans tout Israël quittèrent leurs demeures, et vinrent auprès de lui.
14 for the Levites left their assigned pasture lands and their holdings and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons repudiated them as priests of the LORD.	14 Ils abandonnèrent leurs banlieues et leurs propriétés, et se retirèrent dans Juda et à Jérusalem, parce que Jéroboam et ses fils les avaient chassés, pour qu'ils n'exerçassent aucune fonction du sacerdoce du Seigneur.
15 In their place, he himself appointed priests for the high places and satyrs and calves he had made.	15 Il se fit lui-même des prêtres pour les hauts lieux, pour les démons et pour les veaux d'or qu'il avait faits.
16 After them, all those of the Israelite tribes who firmly desired to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their fathers.	16 Ceux de toutes les tribus d'Israël qui s'étaient appliqués de tout leur coeur à chercher le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, vinrent aussi à Jérusalem pour immoler leurs victimes en présence du Seigneur, le Dieu de leurs pères.
17 Thus they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam, son of Solomon, prevail for three years; for they walked in the way of David and Solomon three years.	17 Ainsi ils affermirent le royaume de Juda, et ils soutinrent Roboam, fils de Salomon, durant trois ans. Car ils ne marchèrent dans les voies de David et de Salomon que durant trois ans.
18 Rehoboam took to himself as wife Mahalath, daughter of Jerimoth, son of David and of Abihail, daughter of Eliab, son of Jesse.	18 Or Roboam épousa Mahalath, fille de Jérimoth, fils de David; et aussi Abihaïl, fille d'Eliab, fils d'Isaï,
19 She bore him sons: Jehush, Shemariah and Zaham.	19 de laquelle il eut Jéhus, et Somoria, et Zoom.
20 After her, he married Maacah, daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.	20 Après celle-ci, il épousa encore Maacha, fille d'Absalom, dont il eut Abia, Ethaï, Ziza et Salomith.
21 Rehoboam loved Maacah, daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines; he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.	21 Or Roboam aima Maacha, fille d'Absalom, plus que toutes ses autres femmes et concubines. Car il eut dix-huit femmes et soixante concubines, et il engendra vingt-huit fils et soixante filles.
22 Rehoboam constituted Abijah, son of Maacah, commander among his brothers, for he intended to make him king.	22 Il éleva Abia, fils de Maacha, au-dessus de tous ses frères, car il voulait le faire régner après lui,
23 He acted prudently, distributing various of his sons throughout all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, in all the fortified cities; and he furnished them with copious provisions and sought an abundance of wives for them.	23 parce qu'il était plus sage et plus puissant que tous ses autres fils dans toute l'étendue de Juda et de Benjamin, et dans toutes les villes murées; il leur fournit des vivres en abondance, et obtint pour eux des femmes nombreuses.
