| 1 Ponete mente quale carità diede a noi il Padre, che semo chiamati [e semo] figliuoli di Dio. Per questo non ci conosce il mondo che non conobbe lui. | 1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. |
| 2 Carissimi, ora semo figliuoli di Dio; e ancora non apparisce quello che saremo, ma sapemo che quando apparirà, saremo assimigliati a lui; però che il vederemo sì come egli è. | 2 Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. |
| 3 E ogni uomo che ha questa speranza in lui, santifica sè medesimo, sì come è santo egli. | 3 And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. |
| 4 Ogni uomo che fa peccato, fa iniquità; e il peccato è iniquità. | 4 Every one who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. |
| 5 E sappiate ch' egli apparitte per togliere le peccata; e in lui non è peccato. | 5 You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. |
| 6 Ogni uomo che permane in lui, non pecca; e ogni uomo che pecca, non vide lui e nollo conobbe. | 6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. |
| 7 Figliuoli, niuno uomo v' inganni. Quello che fa la giustizia giusto è, [sì come è giusto egli]. | 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, as he is righteous. |
| 8 E quello che fa il peccato, è del diavolo, [però che il diavolo] dal cominciamento fece peccato. Per questo apparve il figliuolo di Dio, per distruggere l'opera del diavolo. | 8 He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. |
| 9 Ogni uomo ch' è nato da Dio, non fa peccato; però che il seme suo permane in lui, e non può peccare, però ch' è nato da Dio. | 9 No one born of God commits sin; for God's nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. |
| 10 In questo son manifesti li figliuoli di Dio, e quelli del diavolo. (Ogni uomo che fa giustizia è giusto com' egli); ogni uomo che non è giusto, non è da Dio, e quelli che non ama il suo fratello. | 10 By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. |
| 11 Però che questo è l'annunziamento, il quale udiste dal principio: che amiate l'uno l'altro. | 11 For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, |
| 12 Non come Cain, il quale era dal maligno, e uccise il suo [fratello. E perchè l' uccise? Imperò che le sue opere erano maligne; ma quelle del fratello erano giuste. | 12 and not be like Cain who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. |
| 13 Non vi maravigliate, fratelli, se il mondo v' ha in odio. | 13 Do not wonder, brethren, that the world hates you. |
| 14 Noi semo trasportati da morte a vita, però che amiamo li fratelli. Quelli che non ama, sta in morte. | 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. |
| 15 Ogni uomo che odia il fratello suo, è omicidiale. E sappiate che ogni omicidiale non ha vita eterna permanente in sè. | 15 Any one who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. |
| 16 In questo conosciamo la carità di Dio, però ch' egli puose per noi l'anima sua; e noi la dovemo porre per li nostri fratelli. | 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. |
| 17 Quel che averà la sostanza di questo mondo, e vederà il fratello suo patire necessità, e chiuderà le sue interiora da lui, come è in lui la carità di Dio? | 17 But if any one has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? |
| 18 Figliuoli miei, non ci amiamo con parole e con lingua, ma con fatti e verità. | 18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth. |
| 19 In questo conoscemo che siamo della verità; e nel conspetto suo confortiamo li nostri cuori. | 19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him |
| 20 Imperò che se il cuore nostro averà ripresi noi, Iddio il quale conosce ogni cosa è maggiore del cuore nostro. | 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. |
| 21 Carissimi, se il nostro cuore non ci ripiglierà, fidanza avemo a Iddio. | 21 Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; |
| 22 E ciò che addimandaremo, da lui riceveremo; però che osserviamo li suoi comandamenti, e facciamo quelle cose che son piacevoli dinanzi da lui. | 22 and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. |
| 23 E questo è il suo comandamento: che noi crediamo nel nome del Figliuolo [suo] Iesù Cristo, e amiamo l'uno l'altro, sì come diede comandamento a noi. | 23 And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. |
| 24 E quelli che osserva li comandamenti suoi in lui permane, ed egli è in lui; e in questo sapemo che permane in noi, però che il Spirito suo diede a noi. | 24 All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us. |
