| 1 Fratelli miei, non vogliate in ricevimento di persone avere la fede del nostro Signor Iesù Cristo di gloria. | 1 My brethren, show no partiality as you hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. |
| 2 Però che s' egli entrerà nella vostra congregazione uomo che abbia anello d'oro con bianco vestimento, e entrerà il poverello col laido vestimento, | 2 For if a man with gold rings and in fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, |
| 3 e intenderete in colui ch' è vestito di belle vestimenta, e direte a lui: tu siedi qui bene, ma al povero direte: tu sta colà, e siedi sotto il scannello de' miei piedi; | 3 and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "Have a seat here, please," while you say to the poor man, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," |
| 4 or non giudicate voi appo voi medesimi, e fatti siete giudici di pensieri iniquitosi? | 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? |
| 5 Udite, fratelli miei molto amati: non chiamò Dio in questo mondo li poveri, ricchi in fede ed eredi di regno, il qual repromise Dio alli amatori di sè? | 5 Listen, my beloved brethren. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him? |
| 6 Ma voi avvergognaste li poveri. Or li ricchi per la potenza non costringono voi, e traggono voi alli giudicii? | 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you, is it not they who drag you into court? |
| 7 Or non biastemiano egli il buon nome, il qual è chiamato sopra voi? | 7 Is it not they who blaspheme that honorable name which was invoked over you? |
| 8 Ma impertanto, se voi osservate la legge reale secondo le Scritture: ama il prossimo tuo si come te medesimo, bene farete. | 8 If you really fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. |
| 9 Ma se voi ricevete le persone, peccato adoperate, ripresi della legge come trapassatori. | 9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. |
| 10 Ma qualunque tutta la legge osserverà, e offenda in uno fatto, è di tutti (i comandamenti) colpevole. | 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. |
| 11 Però che quelli che disse: non adulterare, disse: non uccidere. Che se tu non adulteri, ma uccidi, fatto se' trapassatore della legge. | 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," said also, "Do not kill." If you do not commit adultery but do kill, you have become a transgressor of the law. |
| 12 Così parlate, così fate, sì come per la legge della libertà incominciando a esser giudicati | 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. |
| 13 Imperò che giudicio senza misericordia ha colui che non fa misericordia; ma la misericordia soprasta al giudicio. | 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy; yet mercy triumphs over judgment. |
| 14 Che prode sarà, fratelli miei, s' alcuno dice. avere fede, ma opere non abbia? La fede nol potrà salvare. | 14 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? |
| 15 Ma [se] il fratello e la sorella son ignudi, e bisognosi del mangiare ciascuno dì, | 15 If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, |
| 16 e dica alcuno di voi: (andate voi) andate in pace e scaldatevi e siate saturati, e non darete a lor le cose che (a lor) son mestieri al corpo, che prode fia (a voi)? | 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? |
| 17 E così la fede, s' ella non hae opere, ella è morta in sè medesima. | 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. |
| 18 Ma direbbe alcuno: tu hai la fede, e io abbo l'opere; mostrami la [tua] fede senza l'opere, e io mostrarò a te per le opere la fede mia. | 18 But some one will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. |
| 19 Tu credi che sia un Iddio; ben fai; e le demonia il credono, e triemano. | 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder. |
| 20 Ma vuoli sapere, uomo vano, che la fede senza l'opere è oziosa? | 20 Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren? |
| 21 Abraam, padre nostro, non è egli per l' opere giustificato, offerendo Isaac suo figliuolo sopra l'altare? | 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? |
| 22 Vedi; quello adoperava insieme coll' opere sue; e la fede è per l'opere compiuta. | 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, |
| 23 Ed è empita la Scrittura, dicendo: credette Abraam a Iddio, ed è computato a lui a giustizia, e amico di Dio è chiamato. | 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness"; and he was called the friend of God. |
| 24 Vedete, che per l'opere è l'uomo giustificato, e non tanto per la fede? | 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. |
| 25 Simigliantemente Raab meretrice non è el'a per l'opere giustificata, ricevendo li messi, e per altra via mandandogli? | 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? |
| 26 Però che si come il corpo è morto senza il spirito, così è morta la fede senza l'opere. | 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead. |
