| 1 E queste novelle incontinente furono sparte e nunziate agli apostoli, e agli altri cristiani che erano in Iudea (e in Galilea). | 1 Now the apostles and the brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. |
| 2 Ritornato Pietro poi in Ierusalem, incominciorono a mormorare contra a lui li giudei convertiti. | 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, |
| 3 E dissonli: or come andasti a stare con uomini (pagani e) non circoncisi, e mangiasti con loro? | 3 saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" |
| 4 Allora Pietro incominciò per ordine a rendere loro ragione (per sua scusa e per sua chiarezza), e disse loro | 4 But Peter began and explained to them in order: |
| 5 la visione, che avea veduta in Ioppe, orando (in sul mezzodì in casa di Simone coriario), essendo rapito in eccesso di mente, cioè del lenzuolo, | 5 "I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, something descending, like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came down to me. |
| 6 che vide pieno d'animali e di serpenti e d' uccelli; | 6 Looking at it closely I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. |
| 7 e (ciò che li fu detto e ciò ch' elli rispose secondo che di sopra è detto) che udì una voce che gli disse: stà su, e uccidi e mangia (di queste cose). | 7 And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.' |
| 8 Alla qual voce rispose e disse: Messere, Iddio me ne cessi, chè io mai non mangiai alcuna cosa comune e immonda. | 8 But I said, 'No, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' |
| 9 Allora la voce gli rispose, e disse: quello che Iddio hae purificato, non dir tu che sia immondo. | 9 But the voice answered a second time from heaven, 'What God has cleansed you must not call common.' |
| 10 E così vide e udi tre volte; e poi incontanente lo predetto lenzuolo e vaso con gli predetti animali fu ricolto in cielo. | 10 This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. |
| 11 E come poi gli uomini vennero per lui da parte di Cornelio. | 11 At that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. |
| 12 E come il Spirito Santo gli comandò ch' egli andasse con loro, e non dubitasse. | 12 And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brethren also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. |
| 13 E così narrò per ordine come andò, e ciò che Cornelio li disse della visione che avea avuta e dell' ammonimento di mandare per lui; | 13 And he told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon called Peter; |
| 14 il quale gli dirà quello che abbia a fare per essere salvo; | 14 he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.' |
| 15 e come, parlando elli, venne sopra di loro il Spirito Santo, secondo ch' egli udito avevano. | 15 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. |
| 16 E allora disse: io mi arricordai di quelio detto di Cristo, quando disse: Giovanni battezzò in acqua, ma voi sarete battezzati di Spirito Santo. | 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' |
| 17 (E poi conchiuse Pietro e disse:) se adunque Iddio ha vogliuto dare a loro quella medesima grazia che a noi, chi era (o chi son) io, che la dovessi proibire? | 17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?" |
| 18 Le quali parole quelli udendo, tacettero; e glorificarono Dio, dicendo che avea dato la sua grazia a' pagani, e chiamatili a penitenza. | 18 When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life." |
| 19 E quelli ch' erano dispersi dopo la tribulazione (e dopo il martirio) di Stefano andarono insino a Fenice e in Cipro e in Antiochia, non parlando e non predicando se non a' giudei. | 19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. |
| 20 Ma alquanti di loro ch' erano (nati) alcuni di Cipro, alcuni di Cirene, venendo in Antiochia, parlavano [anche] a quelli di Grecia, e predicavano loro la fede di Cristo. | 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. |
| 21 E la mano (cioè la virtù) di Dio era con loro, sì [che] molti se ne convertirono a Cristo. | 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. |
| 22 La quale cosa udendo i cristiani ch' erano rimasi in Ierusalem, mandaronvi Barnaba insino ad Antiochia. | 22 News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. |
| 23 Il quale pervenendovi, e vedendovi (moltiplicati li fedeli per) la divina grazia, allegravasi molto; e confortolli tutti di perseverare di cuore nella fede. | 23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; |
| 24 Però ch' era buono uomo, pieno di Spirito Santo e di fede; onde (per il suo predicare non solamente si confermavano quelli ch' erano convertiti, ma) eziandio molti altri se ne convertivano. | 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. |
| 25 E poi (quindi si partì e) andò in Tarso per trovare Saulo; il quale trovando, andorono insieme in Antiochia. | 25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; |
| 26 E quivi stettero per spazio d'uno anno, ammaestrando la turba; e (tanti ne convertirono che) quivi in prima li discepoli si cominciarono a chiamare (pubblicamente) Cristiani. | 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. |
| 27 E in quelli di sopravennero di Ierusalem certi profeti (cristiani). | 27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. |
| 28 Fra' quali v'era uno chiamato Agabo, il quale (pubblicamente diceva e) prenunziava che grande fame e carestia doveva tosto sopravenire in tutto il mondo; e così (poi tosto) venne al tempo di Claudio (imperatore). | 28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. |
| 29 Allora li discepoli (cristiani), secondo che ciascuno poteva, procurarono di mandare alcuna elimosina alli cristiani che abitavano in Iudea. | 29 And the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea; |
| 30 E così facendo (tra loro certa côlta), mandorono loro (certa) elemosina per mano di Saulo e di Barnaba. | 30 and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. |
