| 1 Poi si levò per lui il suo figliuolo Giuda, che era chiamato Maccabeo. | 1 Then Judas his son, who was called Maccabeus, took command in his place. |
| 2 E lui aiutavano tutti li suoi fratelli, e tutti quelli che s'erano accostati al suo padre, e combattevano in battaglia per lo popolo d' Israel allegramente. | 2 All his brothers and all who had joined his father helped him; they gladly fought for Israel. |
| 3 Ed egli amplificòe gloria alla sua gente, vestissi di lorica (cioè di panziera) a guisa d'uno gigante, e armossi delle sue battaglieresche armi; e (in battaglia egli) difendeva il suo esercito colla sua spada. | 3 He extended the glory of his people. Like a giant he put on his breastplate; he girded on his armor of war and waged battles, protecting the host by his sword. |
| 4 Egli fu simigliante allo leone nelle sue operazioni, e fue sì come il giovane lioncello nella caccia. | 4 He was like a lion in his deeds, like a lion's cub roaring for prey. |
| 5 Egli perseguitòe li malvagi, perseguitando loro aspramente; e mise a fuoco e a fiamma quegli che ingiuriavano il popolo suo. | 5 He searched out and pursued the lawless; he burned those who troubled his people. |
| 6 E per la paura sua furono iscacciati li suoi nimici, e tutti (li malifattori e) li operatori di iniquità per lui furono ispaventati; e nelle sue mani si dirizzò la salute (della sua gente). | 6 Lawless men shrank back for fear of him; all the evildoers were confounded; and deliverance prospered by his hand. |
| 7 E molto faceva isgomentare i regni (de' suoi nemici), e (per questo) faceva lieto (il lignaggio di) Iacob nelle sue gloriose opere; sì che in secolo è la sua memoria in benedizione. | 7 He embittered many kings, but he made Jacob glad by his deeds, and his memory is blessed for ever. |
| 8 Adunque (Giuda) ricercava le cittadi de'Giudei; e distrusse la mala gente per tutto il paese, e cacciò l'ira del popolo d' Israel. | 8 He went through the cities of Judah; he destroyed the ungodly out of the land; * thus he turned away wrath from Israel. |
| 9 E la sua fama si sparse infino agli ultimi confini della terra; e radunòe i fuggitivi e gli scacciati. | 9 He was renowned to the ends of the earth; he gathered in those who were perishing. |
| 10 Allora Apollonio (intendendo la magnificenza di Giuda) radunòe gente di Samaria, e grande potenza e assai combattitori, per fare battaglia col popolo d'Israel. | 10 But Apollonius gathered together Gentiles and a large force from Samaria to fight against Israel. |
| 11 E quando Giuda il seppe, sì gli uscì incontro, e sconfisselo e ucciselo; e molti della sua gente ne furono feriti e abbattuti, e gli altri fuggirono. | 11 When Judas learned of it, he went out to meet him, and he defeated and killed him. Many were wounded and fell, and the rest fled. |
| 12 E presono le loro spoglie; e la spada di Apollonio la guadagnò Giuda, e poi sempre la usava nelle sue battaglie. | 12 Then they seized their spoils; and Judas took the sword of Apollonius, and used it in battle the rest of his life. |
| 13 Ma quando Seron, principe dell' oste di Siria, intese come Giuda (vittorioso) avea radunato gente e tutta la congregazione de' fedeli, | 13 Now when Seron, the commander of the Syrian army, heard that Judas had gathered a large company, including a body of faithful men who stayed with him and went out to battle, |
| 14 e' disse ch' egli acquisterebbe a sè grande nome, dicendo: io sarò glorioso nello reame, e sconfiggerò Giuda e tutti quelli che lui sèguitano, sì come dispregiatori del comandamento del re. | 14 he said, "I will make a name for myself and win honor in the kingdom. I will make war on Judas and his companions, who scorn the king's command." |
| 15 E allora s' apparecchiò collo suo oste; e con lui vennono uomini malvagi, e forti e battagliereschi, per fare vendetta de' figliuoli d' Israel. | 15 And again a strong army of ungodly men went up with him to help him, to take vengeance on the sons of Israel. |
| 16 E così s' appressarono insino a Betoron; e Giuda uscì loro incontro con poca gente. | 16 When he approached the ascent of Beth-horon, Judas went out to meet him with a small company. |
| 17 E quando la gente di Giuda viddono loro venire adosso lo grande oste, dissono a Giuda: or come potremo noi, così pochi, combattere contro a tanta moltitudine, così forte? Noi siamo ancora molto affaticati per lo digiuno d' oggi. | 17 But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas, "How can we, few as we are, fight against so great and strong a multitude? And we are faint, for we have eaten nothing today." |
| 18 Rispose loro Giuda: agevole cosa è che li molti sieno vinti da' pochi; imperò che non è differenza, nel conspetto di Dio del cielo, di liberare e' suoi da molti, o da quelli che sieno pochi. | 18 Judas replied, "It is easy for many to be hemmed in by few, for in the sight of Heaven there is no difference between saving by many or by few. |
| 19 Certo la vittoria della battaglia non è nella moltitudine dell' oste, ma la fortezza viene dal cielo. | 19 It is not on the size of the army that victory in battle depends, but strength comes from Heaven. |
| 20 Loro vengono a noi con superbia e con rigogliosa moltitudine, per disertarci insieme colle nostre donne e con le nostre famiglie e figliuoli, per tòrre il nostro. | 20 They come against us in great pride and lawlessness to destroy us and our wives and our children, and to despoil us; |
| 21 Ma noi combattiamo per le nostre persone difendere, e per mantenere le nostre leggi. | 21 but we fight for our lives and our laws. |
| 22 E (però siate d' auimi forti, chè) Iddio gli attriterà dinanzi dalla nostra faccia; imperò non dubitate niente di loro. | 22 He himself will crush them before us; as for you, do not be afraid of them." |
| 23 E fatto fine alle sue parole, subitamente gli assalì; e (incontanente) fue isconfitto Seron e tutta la sua oste. | 23 When he finished speaking, he rushed suddenly against Seron and his army, and they were crushed before him. |
| 24 E Giuda il perseguitòe insino alla scesa di Betoron per sino quando si viene in campo, (e morti ne furono assai), e caddono de' nemici ottocento; e gli altri uomini sì fuggirono nelle terre de' Filistei. | 24 They pursued them * down the descent of Beth-horon to the plain; eight hundred of them fell, and the rest fled into the land of the Philistines. |
| 25 Allora si isparse il pauroso nome di Giuda e de' suoi fratelli sopra tutte le genti delle terre (vicine e) dintorno. | 25 Then Judas and his brothers began to be feared, and terror fell upon the Gentiles round about them. |
| 26 E la sua fama pervenne allo re (Antioco), e tutte le genti incominciarono a ragionare delle sue battaglie. | 26 His fame reached the king, and the Gentiles talked of the battles of Judas. |
| 27 E (veramente) quando lo re Antioco udì queste novelle, molto s' adirò nell' animo suo; e mandò a radunare tutta l'oste del suo reame di gente forte a combattere. | 27 When king Antiochus heard these reports, he was greatly angered; and he sent and gathered all the forces of his kingdom, a very strong army. |
| 28 E aperse la camera del suo tesoro, e diede all' oste suo soldo per uno anno; e comandò loro che fussono apparecchiati d' ogni cosa (che si richiedeva. ad oste). | 28 And he opened his coffers and gave a year's pay to his forces, and ordered them to be ready for any need. |
| 29 Ma (avvenne ch' egli) s' avvidde che la pecunia gli era mancata de' suoi tesori, e che gli tributi delle regioni erano rari per le discordie, e per le divisioni e per le gravezze che loro aveano avute pagando le legittime, per le usanze ch' erano state fatte per li antichi tempi. | 29 Then he saw that the money in the treasury was exhausted, and that the revenues from the country were small because of the dissension and disaster which he had caused in the land by abolishing the laws that had existed from the earliest days. |
| 30 Di che dubitòe (lo re Antioco), che non gli mancasse la pecunia per le grandi spese, e per fare i ricchi doni i quali per addietro avea usati con larga mano; conciosia cosa che n' era stato divizioso sopra gli altri re ch' erano stati innanzi a lui. | 30 He feared that he might not have such funds as he had before for his expenses and for the gifts which he used to give more lavishly than preceding kings. |
| 31 E per questa cagione era molto invilito nell'animo suo; donde egli pensò d'andare in Persia, e di ricevere li tributi delle contrade, e di radunare molto argento. | 31 He was greatly perplexed in mind, and determined to go to Persia and collect the revenues from those regions and raise a large fund. |
| 32 E lasciò sopra i fatti del reame Lisia, uomo nobile della schiatta regale, facendo lui signore dal fiume di Eufrate insino al fiume d' Egitto. | 32 He left Lysias, a distinguished man of royal lineage, in charge of the king's affairs from the river Euphrates to the borders of Egypt. |
| 33 E raccomandògli Antioco suo figliuolo, che lo allevasse insino alla sua ritornata. | 33 Lysias * was also to take care of Antiochus his son until he returned. |
| 34 E diedegli la metà dell' oste sua, e diedegli elefanti; e imposegli di ciò ch' egli voleva facesse; e degli abitanti di Giudea e di Gerusalemme, | 34 And he turned over to Lysias half of his troops and the elephants, and gave him orders about all that he wanted done. As for the residents of Judea and Jerusalem, |
| 35 ch' egli mandasse contro a loro oste, e distruggesse e disertasse il popolo della terra d' Israel, e ispergesse l'avanzo di Ierusalem; e la loro memoria tòrre dal detto luogo, | 35 Lysias was to send a force against them to wipe out and destroy the strength of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem; he was to banish the memory of them from the place, |
| 36 e spogliare la contrada de' suoi figliuoli, e mettervi gente nuova e istrana, che abitassono per tutti i loro confini; e che per sorte dividesse la loro terra. | 36 settle aliens in all their territory, and distribute their land. |
| 37 E allora si partì lo re (Antioco) con parte dell' avanzo della sua oste, movendosi di Antiochia, la città del suo regno, nell' anno CXLVII (del regno de' Greci); e passando il fiume di Eufrate, camminando ricercòe la regione di sopra. | 37 Then the king took the remaining half of his troops and departed from Antioch his capital in the one hundred and forty-seventh year. * He crossed the Euphrates river and went through the upper provinces. |
| 38 E (intanto) Lisia elesse suoi principi, che l'uno fu Tolomeo figliuolo di Dorimino, e Nicanore e Gorgia, uomini potenti e amici del re. | 38 Lysias chose Ptolemy the son of Dorymenes, and Nicanor and Gorgias, mighty men among the friends of the king, |
| 39 E mandògli in Giudea con XL milia uomini pedoni, e VII milia cavalieri, acciò che distruggessono il paese (e la gente che vi abitava) secondo il comandamento del re. | 39 and sent with them forty thousand infantry and seven thousand cavalry to go into the land of Judah and destroy it, as the king had commanded. |
| 40 E così si misono in cammino con tutta la loro potenza, e capitarono nella cittade di Emmaum nella pianura. | 40 so they departed with their entire force, and when they arrived they encamped near Emmaus in the plain. |
| 41 E quando i mercatanti della contrada udirono la grande nominanza delli detti principi (e del loro grande oste), sì vennono nel campo con molto oro e ariento, con molti servi, comperare de' figliuoli d' Israel per ischiavi (e per servi); ancora l'oste di Siria e d'altre genti strane si radunarono con loro. | 41 When the traders of the region heard what was said to them, they took silver and gold in immense amounts, and fetters, * and went to the camp to get the sons of Israel for slaves. And forces from Syria and the land of the Philistines joined with them. |
| 42 E Giuda (Maccabeo) e li suoi fratelli (savi) avvedendosi che li mali erano multiplicati (sopra la terra), e che l'oste era accampata nelli confini della loro terra, seppono come lo re (Antioco) avea comandato che la gente Giudea fosse consumata e morta. | 42 Now Judas and his brothers saw that misfortunes had increased and that the forces were encamped in their territory. They also learned what the king had commanded to do to the people to cause their final destruction. |
| 43 Allora (radunò la sua gente a parlamento loro) Giuda e loro con grande concordia si dispuosono di volere battagliare, dicendo; combattiamo, e non lasciamo abbattere la nostra franchigia; prendiamo l'arme per lo popolo nostro, e per gli nostri santi. | 43 But they said to one another, "Let us repair the destruction of our people, and fight for our people and the sanctuary." |
| 44 E così radunarono grande popolo (e grande esercito della gente Giudea), che loro fussono apparecchiati alla battaglia, e per addomandare a Dio aiuto e misericordia. | 44 And the congregation assembled to be ready for battle, and to pray and ask for mercy and compassion. |
| 45 Imperciò che (in tanta paura era la provincia e il paese, che) in Ierusalem non abitava, anzi era come uno deserto; e non vi era alcuno (de' figliuoli d' Israel nè alcuno) suo cittadino, che vi entrasse nè uscisse, e la terra santa sì era (abitata e) conculcata da gente fiera e strana e peccatrice, li quali guardavano la sua bella ròcca; onde ogni allegrezza era fuggita da' figliuoli d' Israel, e aveano abbandonato ogni dolcezza, come è di trombe e di stromenti. | 45 Jerusalem was uninhabited like a wilderness; not one of her children went in or out. The sanctuary was trampled down, and the sons of aliens held the citadel; it was a lodging place for the Gentiles. Joy was taken from Jacob; the flute and the harp ceased to play. |
| 46 E così radunati se ne vennono dinanzi da Ierusalem in (un luogo chiamato) Masfa; però che era luogo di orazione in Masfa dinanzi a Israel. | 46 So they assembled and went to Mizpah, opposite Jerusalem, because Israel formerly had a place of prayer in Mizpah. |
| 47 E (il popolo d' Israel) digiunarono quel dì, e vestironsi di cilicii, e puosonsi cenere in capo, e istracciarono (per dolore) le loro vestimenta. | 47 They fasted that day, put on sackcloth and sprinkled ashes on their heads, and rent their clothes. |
| 48 E feciono venire i libri della legge, de' quali libri i pagani cavarono la similitudine del loro idolo. | 48 And they opened the book of the law to inquire into those matters about which the Gentiles were consulting the images of their idols. |
| 49 E trassono fuori gli ornamenti sacerdotali, e recarono le primizie e le decime; e suscitarono li Nazarei, i quali aveano già adempiuti li giorni. | 49 They also brought the garments of the priesthood and the first fruits and the tithes, and they stirred up the Nazirites who had completed their days; |
| 50 E con alta voce chiamarono Iddio del cielo, dicendo or come faremo noi di costoro? or dove gli meneremo noi? | 50 and they cried aloud to Heaven, saying, "What shall we do with these? Where shall we take them? |
| 51 Certo i tuoi santi luoghi sono conculcati e contaminati, e li tuoi sacerdoti son convertiti a pianto e a miseria. | 51 Thy sanctuary is trampled down and profaned, and thy priests mourn in humiliation. |
| 52 Ed ecco che le genti strane sono radunate per combatterci e consumarci; tu sai quello che loro hanno ordinato contro a noi. | 52 And behold, the Gentiles are assembled against us to destroy us; thou knowest what they plot against us. |
| 53 Or come potremo noi difenderci dalla loro potenza, se tu non ci aiuti? | 53 How will we be able to withstand them, if thou dost not help us?" |
| 54 E (avendo compiute di dire queste parole, allora ordinarono la battaglia e) venneno incontro a loro, sonando le trombe altamente. | 54 Then they sounded the trumpets and gave a loud shout. |
| 55 E Giuda ordinòe i guidatori del popolo, fece tribuni e centurioni, e quinquagenarii e decani. | 55 After this Judas appointed leaders of the people, in charge of thousands and hundreds and fifties and tens. |
| 56 E adempiendo la legge, rimandò a dietro a casa loro li edificatori delle case, e li piantatori delle vigne, e quelli che aveano menato le novelle mogli, e tutti i paurosi. | 56 And he said to those who were building houses, or were betrothed, or were planting vineyards, or were fainthearted, that each should return to his home, according to the law. |
| 57 E poi mosse il campo, e puosesi dal lato di mezzogiorno di Emmaum. | 57 Then the army marched out and encamped to the south of Emmaus. |
| 58 E allora gli confortò Giuda, dicendo: apparecchiate, e siate figliuoli della fortezza, potenti e arditi, sì che domattina combattiate contro alle nazioni che sono venute a distruggere noi e li santi luoghi. | 58 And Judas said, "Gird yourselves and be valiant. Be ready early in the morning to fight with these Gentiles who have assembled against us to destroy us and our sanctuary. |
| 59 (Dicendo loro:) meglio ci è di morire in battaglia, che di vedere strazio (di noi e) delle nostre genti e de' santi luoghi. | 59 It is better for us to die in battle than to see the misfortunes of our nation and of the sanctuary. |
| 60 E poi sia quello che piace a Dio del cielo. | 60 But as his will in heaven may be, so he will do." |
