| 1 E dopo che cessarono di parlare, rimase Oloferne molto indignato, e disse ad Achior: | 1 When the disturbance made by the men outside the council died down, Holofernes, the commander of the Assyrian army, said to Achior and all the Moabites in the presence of all the foreign contingents: |
| 2 Però che tu ci hai profetato, dicendo che la gente d' Israel sarà difesa dal suo Iddio, acciò ch' io ti dimostri che non è Iddio in terra, se non Nabucodonosor, | 2 "And who are you, Achior, and you hirelings of Ephraim, to prophesy among us as you have done today and tell us not to make war against the people of Israel because their God will defend them? Who is God except Nebuchadnezzar? |
| 3 quando noi avremo percossi tutti loro, come se percuotessimo uno uomo, allora e tu con loro perirai di coltello degli Assirii, e tutto Israel insieme con te sarà posto in perdizione; | 3 He will send his forces and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them--we the king's servants will destroy them as one man. They cannot resist the might of our cavalry. |
| 4 e proverai che Nabucodonosor sia signore di tutta la terra; e allora il coltello del mio esercito passerà per li lati del corpo tuo, e perforato cadrai fra li feriti (e uccisi) d' Israel, e non respirerai più, persino che tu sii esterminato con loro. | 4 We will burn them up, and their mountains will be drunk with their blood, and their fields will be full of their dead. They cannot withstand us, but will utterly perish. So says King Nebuchadnezzar, the lord of the whole earth. For he has spoken; none of his words shall be in vain. |
| 5 Ma se tu pensi che la tua profezia sia vera, non s'attristi il tuo viso; e non rimanga più la faccia tua pallida, se tu pensi che il mio parlare non abbi effetto. | 5 "But you, Achior, you Ammonite hireling, who have said these words on the day of your iniquity, you shall not see my face again from this day until I take revenge on this race that came out of Egypt. |
| 6 E acciò che tu conoschi che tu insieme con loro abbi a provare per esperienza questo ch' io ho detto, ecco ch' io in quest' ora ti voglio mandare a quello popolo, e accompagnarti con loro, acciò che quando loro riceveranno le pene degne del mio coltello, tu rimanghi sottoposto a questa vendetta. | 6 Then the sword of my army and the spear of my servants shall pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their wounded, when I return. |
| 7 Allora Oloferne comandò alli servi suoi, che pigliassero Achior, e che lo menassero in Betulia e desserlo nelle mani de' figliuoli d' Israel. | 7 Now my slaves are going to take you back into the hill country and put you in one of the cities beside the passes, |
| 8 E pigliato che l'ebbono i servi di Oloferne, andarono per i campi (verso Betulia); e quando furono prossimi alli monti, uscirono fuori contro a loro gli uomini che gettavano le pietre con le fionde. | 8 and you will not die until you perish along with them. |
| 9 Loro, vedendo questo, declinarono a lato ai monti, e legorono Achior ad uno arbore con le mani e con i piedi; e così legato con le funi lo lasciorono, e ritornarono al suo signore. | 9 If you really hope in your heart that they will not be taken, do not look downcast! I have spoken and none of my words shall fail." |
| 10 E (veduto questo) i figliuoli d'Israel scesero di Betulia, e vennero a lui. Lo qual isciolto, lo menarono in Betulia; e posto nel mezzo del popolo, addimandarono quale fosse la cagione di questo, che gli Assirii l'avessono lasciato a questo modo legato. | 10 Then Holofernes ordered his slaves, who waited on him in his tent, to seize Achior and take him to Bethulia and hand him over to the men of Israel. |
| 11 In quel tempo erano in quello luogo prìncipi Ozia figliuolo di Mica della tribù di Simeon e Carmi il qual anco si chiamava Gotoniel. | 11 So the slaves took him and led him out of the camp into the plain, and from the plain they went up into the hill country and came to the springs below Bethulia. |
| 12 E Achior, istando nel mezzo degli antichi e nel cospetto di tutti, disse tutte quelle cose che lui avea detto essendo dimandato da Oloferne, e come il popolo di Oloferne lo avea voluto uccidere per cagione di questa risposta; | 12 When the men of the city saw them, they caught up their weapons and ran out of the city to the top of the hill, and all the slingers kept them from coming up by casting stones at them. |
| 13 e a che modo Oloferne si era turbato, e che per questo comandò che lui vi fosse dato nelle mani, acciò che quando lui vincerà i figliuoli d' Israel, che anco Achior sia per suo comandamento con diversi supplizii ucciso, per questo che lui disse che il Dio del cielo sarà difensore d' Israel. | 13 However, they got under the shelter of the hill and they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the hill, and returned to their master. |
| 14 E avendo Achior esposto tutte queste cose, tutto il popolo si chinò con la faccia sua, adorando il Signore; e tutti, di una volontà, con una universal lamentazione e pianto pregavano, | 14 Then the men of Israel came down from their city and found him; and they untied him and brought him into Bethulia and placed him before the magistrates of their city, |
| 15 dicendo: Signore Iddio del cielo e della terra, riguarda alla superbia di questa gente e alla nostra umiltà, e considera alla faccia de' tuoi servi, e dimostra che tu non abbandoni quelli che si confidano di te; e quelli che presumono di sè, e confidansi di gloriarsi nella sua virtù, tu gli umillii. | 15 who in those days were Uzziah the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel. |
| 16 E compiuto il pianto, e compiuta la orazione del popolo per tutto il dì, consolorono Achior, | 16 They called together all the elders of the city, and all their young men and their women ran to the assembly; and they set Achior in the midst of all their people, and Uzziah asked him what had happened. |
| 17 dicendo: lo Dio de' padri nostri, la virtù del quale tu hai predicato, lui ti darà questa retribuzione, che tu piuttosto vederai la sua distruzione. | 17 He answered and told them what had taken place at the council of Holofernes, and all that he had said in the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and all that Holofernes had said so boastfully against the house of Israel. |
| 18 E conciosia cosa che Iddio abbi dato questa libertà ai servi suoi, sia anco Dio teco nel mezzo di noi; chè sì come a te piacerà, così tu conversi [nosco] con tutti i tuoi. | 18 Then the people fell down and worshiped God, and cried out to him, and said, |
| 19 Allora Ozia, finito lo consiglio, lo ricevè in casa sua, e fece una grande cena. | 19 "O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and have pity on the humiliation of our people, and look this day upon the faces of those who are consecrated to thee." |
| 20 E chiamati tutti li principali e onorati insieme, compiuto lo digiuno, cenorono. | 20 Then they consoled Achior, and praised him greatly. |
| 21 E dopo questo, chiamato tutto il popolo, per tutta la notte stettero nella chiesa in orazione, dimandando adiutorio da Dio d' Israel. | 21 And Uzziah took him from the assembly to his own house and gave a banquet for the elders; and all that night they called on the God of Israel for help. |
