| 2 E venne Anani, uno de' miei fratelli, lui e alcuni uomini di Giuda; e dimanda'gli de' Giudei i quali erano rimasti di quelli che furono presi, e di Ierusalem. | 2 that Hanani, one of my brethren, came with certain men out of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that survived, who had escaped exile, and concerning Jerusalem. |
| 3 E dissero a me: quelli li quali sono rimasti e sono restati, di quelli che furono presi ivi nella provincia, sono in grande afflizione e obbrobrio; e il muro di Ierusalem si è dissipato, e le porte sue sono combuste al fuoco. | 3 And they said to me, "The survivors there in the province who escaped exile are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire." |
| 4 E con ciò sia cosa ch' io udissi queste parole, sedei e piansi molti dì; e digiunava e orava nel cospetto di Dio del cielo. | 4 When I heard these words I sat down and wept, and mourned for days; and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. |
| 5 E dissi: io ti priego, Signore Iddio del cielo, forte, grande e terribile, lo quale osservi il patto e la misericordia con quelli che ti amano, e servano. li comandamenti tuoi, | 5 And I said, "O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments; |
| 6 sia fatta la tua orecchia ascoltante, e gli occhii tuoi aperti, acciò che tu odi la orazione del servo tuo, con la quale io orerò dinanzi a te oggi, notte e dì, per i figliuoli d' Israel tuoi servi; e confesso per li peccati [de' figliuoli] d' Israel, per li quali peccarono a te; e io e la casa del padre mio peccammo. | 6 let thy ear be attentive, and thy eyes open, to hear the prayer of thy servant which I now pray before thee day and night for the people of Israel thy servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against thee. Yea, I and my father's house have sinned. |
| 7 Vanamente siamo sedotti, e non osservammo lo comandamento e le cerimonie e li giudicii, li quali comandasti a Moisè servo tuo. | 7 We have acted very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances which thou didst command thy servant Moses. |
| 8 Ricòrdati di quello che tu notificasti a Moisè tuo servo, dicendo: quando voi avrete trapassati i miei comandamenti, io vi disperderò nelli popoli. | 8 Remember the word which thou didst command thy servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples; |
| 9 E se voi ritornerete a me, e osserverete li miei comandamenti, facendo l'opere; anco se voi sarete menati alle estremità del cielo, di quelli luoghi vi congregherò, e indurrovvi nel luogo ch' io ho eletto, dove debbe abitare il mio nome. | 9 but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your dispersed be under the farthest skies, I will gather them thence and bring them to the place which I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.' |
| 10 E loro saranno tuoi servi, e tuo popolo, li quali redimesti nella tua grande fortezza, e nella mano valida. | 10 They are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power and by thy strong hand. |
| 11 Priegoti, Signore; sia la tua orecchia attenta alla orazione del servo tuo, e alla orazione de' servi tuoi, i quali voleno temere lo nome tuo; e dirizza il servo tuo oggi, e dàlli misericordia dinanzi a questo uomo. Io certamente era servitore del re a darli a bere. | 11 O Lord, let thy ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants who delight to fear thy name; and give success to thy servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man." Now I was cupbearer to the king. |
