Primo libro di Esdra 10

1 Così adunque pregando Esdra, e dimandando a Dio, e piagnendo e giacendo dinanzi al tempio di Dio, raunossi a lui grande popolo d' Israel, di uomini e di femine e di fanciulli; e pianse il popolo di grande pianto.	1 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
2 E rispose Sechenia figliuolo di Ieiel de' figliuoli di Elam, e disse ad Esdra: noi abbiamo prevaricato contro al Dio nostro, e abbiamo tolto per nostre mogliere le femine forestiere de' popoli delle terre (a noi proibite); e ora se si trova penitenza in Israel sopra di questo peccato,	2 And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: "We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
3 facciamo patto con lo Signore Iddio nostro, e cacciamo fuori tutte le mogliere nostre, e tutti quelli che sono nati di loro, secondo la volontade del Signore; e facciasi secondo la volontade di quelli che temono il comandamento del nostro Signore Iddio.	3 Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4 Lèvati, a te s' appartiene di (vedere e discernere e) giudicare, e noi saremo teco; confòrtati, e fa (quello che far si debba).	4 Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it."
5 Levossi dunque Esdra, e scongiurò li prìncipi delli sacerdoti e delli Leviti e tutto Israel, che facesse secondo quello che era detto; e giurarono (di osservare).	5 Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.
6 E levossi Esdra dinanzi la casa del Signore, e andò alla casa di Ioanan figliuolo di Eliasib, ed entrò ivi; non mangiò pane, e acqua non bevè; e piagnea per la transgressione di quegli che erano venuti di prigione.	6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water; for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.
7 E fu fatto uno comandamento in Giuda e in Ierusalem a tutti i figliuoli della transmigrazione (cioè che furono menati prigione), acciò che si congregassero in Ierusalem.	7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
8 E tutti quelli che non verranno per ispazio di tre giorni, secondo lo consiglio de' principi e degli antichi, saragli tolta tutta la sua sostanza, e fia cacciato della compagnia di quelli che furono tradotti.	8 and that if any one did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.
9 Vennero dunque tutti gli uomini di Giuda c di Beniamin in Ierusalem per ispazio di tre dì, questo è il mese nono, a' venti dì del mese; e sedè tutto [il popolo] nella piazza della casa di Dio, tremando per cagione dello peccato suo, e per la pioggia.	9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.
10 E levossi Esdra sacerdote, e disse a loro: voi avete preterito il comandamento di Dio, e avete condotto mogliere della gente proibita, e avete aggiunto peccato sopra lo peccato d'Israel.	10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have trespassed and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel.
11 E ora promettete al Signore Iddio de' padri vostri, e fate quelle cose che gli è in piacere, e siate separati dalli popoli delle terre, e dalle mogliere che avete tolte dalli popoli delle terre.	11 Now then make confession to the LORD the God of your fathers, and do his will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
12 E tutta la moltitudine rispose, e disse con grande voce: secondo quello che tu hai detto a noi, così si facci.	12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, "It is so; we must do as you have said.
13 Ma perchè lo popolo è molto grande, ed è tempo di pioggia, e non si puote stare di fuori al discoperto, e questo non si può fare in uno ovvero due dì (ma bisogno è di più giorni); e certamente abbiamo peccato grandemente in questo;	13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a work for one day or for two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
14 siano constituiti principi in tutta la moltitudine; e tutti nelle nostre cittadi, i quali abbiano tolto moglie delle genti d' altrui, venghino alli tempi (statuti e) ordinati, e con loro li antichi per caduna città, e li suoi giudici, persino che l'ira di Dio sia tolta da noi sopra di questo peccato.	14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly; let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, till the fierce wrath of our God over this matter be averted from us."
15 Adunque Ionata figliuolo di Azael, e Iaasia figliuolo di Tecue, furono instituiti sopra di questo, e Mesollam e Sebetai Leviti aiutavano loro;	15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullum and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
16 e fecero così li figliuoli della transmigrazione. E andossene Esdra sacerdote, e gli uomini prìncipi delle famiglie, nelle case delli padri loro, e tutti per li nomi suoi; e sederono nel primo dì del mese decimo per (cercare e) investigare questo fatto.	16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of fathers' houses, according to their fathers' houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter;
17 E furono (discussi, terminati e) conosciuti tutti quelli uomini, i quali aveano tolto mogliere della gente d'altrui, persino al dì primo del primo mese.	17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.
18 E furono trovati delli figliuoli delli sacerdoti, i quali aveano condotto mogliere estranee. Dei figliuoli di Iosue i figliuoli di Iosedec, e li suoi fratelli: Maasia ed Eliezer e Iarib e Godolia.	18 Of the sons of the priests who had married foreign women were found Ma-aseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren.
19 E tutti questi diedero le mani sue, promettendo di licenziare le sue mogliere, e che debbino offerire per lo peccato suo uno montone delle pecore.	19 They pledged themselves to put away their wives, and their guilt offering was a ram of the flock for their guilt.
20 E de' figliuoli di Emmer: Anani e Zebedia.	20 Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.
21 E de' figliuoli di Arim: Maasia ed Elia e Semeia e Ieiel e Ozia.	21 Of the sons of Harim: Ma-aseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.
22 E de' figliuoli di Fesur: Elioenai, Maasia e Ismael, Natanael, Iozabed ed Elasa.	22 Of the sons of Pashhur: Eli-o-enai, Ma-aseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 E de' figliuoli de' Leviti: Iozabed e Semei e Celaia, esso è Calita, Fataia, Iuda ed Eliezer.	23 Of the Levites: Jozabad, Shime-i, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Petha-hiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

26 E de' figliuoli di Elam: Matania, Zacaria e Ieiel e Abdi e Ierimot ed Elia.	26 Of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah.
27 E de' figliuoli di Zetua: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matania e Ierimut e Zabad e Aziza.	27 Of the sons of Zattu: Eli-o-enai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza.

44 Tutti questi aveano tolte mogliere forestiere; e furono di queste femine che aveano partorito figliuoli.	44 All these had married foreign women, and they put them away with their children.
