| 1 Dopo queste cose e questa verità, venne Sennacherib re degli Assirii; ed entrando in Giuda, assediò cittadi fornite, volendole prendere. | 1 After these things and these acts of faithfulness Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. |
| 2 La quale cosa udita Ezechia, cioè che Sennacherib era venuto, e che tutto lo impeto della battaglia si convertia inverso Ierusalem, | 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, |
| 3 tenuto consiglio coi principi suoi, e uomini fortissimi, di otturare il capo delle fonti, le quali erano di fuori della città, ed essendo questo confermato per sentenza di tutti, | 3 he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him. |
| 4 congregoe grande moltitudine, e otturarono tutte le fonti, e il rivo il quale correa per lo mezzo della terra, dicendo: acciò che non vengano i re degli Assirii, e non trovino abbondanza d' acqua. | 4 A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the brook that flowed through the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water?" |
| 5 E industriosamente edificò tutto il muro il quale era istato disfatto, e fecevi disopra torri, e di fuori uno altro muro; e racconciò Mello nella città di David, e fece armatura di diverse generazioni, e scuda. | 5 He set to work resolutely and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised towers upon it, and outside it he built another wall; and he strengthened the Millo in the city of David. He also made weapons and shields in abundance. |
| 6 E ordinò i prìncipi de' combattitori nello esercito; e convocogli tutti nella piazza della porta della città, e favelloe al cuore di loro, dicendo: | 6 And he set combat commanders over the people, and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, |
| 7 valentemente fate, e confortatevi e non abbiate paura, e non temete il re degli Assirii, nè tutta la moltitudine la quale è con esso lui; però che molto più ne sono con esso noi, che con loro. | 7 "Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him; for there is one greater with us than with him. |
| 8 Con loro si è braccio di carne; e con esso noi si è il nostro Signore Iddio, il quale è nostro aiutatore, e combatterà per noi. E tutto il popolo si confortò per queste parole di Ezechia re di Giuda. | 8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. |
| 9 E dopo che queste cose furono fatte, mandò Sennacherib re degli Assirii i suoi servi in Ierusalem; ed egli con tutto il suo esercito assediavano Lachis; ad Ezechia re di Giuda, e a tutto il popolo il quale era nella città, dicendo: | 9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria, who was besieging Lachish with all his forces, sent his servants to Jerusalem to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people of Judah that were in Jerusalem, saying, |
| 10 Questo dice Sennacherib re degli Assirii: in chi avendo fidanza sedete assediati in Ierusalem? | 10 "Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, 'On what are you relying, that you stand siege in Jerusalem? |
| 11 E ingànnavi Ezechia per conducervi alla morte di fame e di sete, affermando che il vostro Signore vi libererà delle mani del re degli Assirii? | 11 Is not Hezekiah misleading you, that he may give you over to die by famine and by thirst, when he tells you, "The LORD our God will deliver us from the hand of the king of Assyria"? |
| 12 Non è egli questo Ezechia, il quale disfece i luoghi alti suoi e' suoi altari, e comandò a Ginda e a Ierusalem, dicendo: voi adorerete dinanzi ad uno altare, e in quello voi arderete lo incenso? | 12 Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, "Before one altar you shall worship, and upon it you shall burn your sacrifices"? |
| 13 E non sapete voi quello ch' io e i miei padri avemo fatto ai popoli di tutte le terre? Hanno egli potuto, tutti gli dii delle terre e delle genti, liberare i suoi reami della mia mano? | 13 Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliver their lands out of my hand? |
| 14 Chi è di tutti gli dii delle genti, le quali i miei padri hanno disfatte, che abbia potuto liberare il suo popolo della mia mano, che possa il vostro Iddio liberare voi della mia mano? | 14 Who among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand? |
| 15 Onde non v' inganni Ezechia, nè con vana suasione vi beffi, e non gli credete. S' egli non fu veruno Dio di tutte le genti, il quale potesse liberare il suo popolo della mia mano e della mano dei padri miei, sèguita anco, che il vostro Iddio non potrà (anco) liberare voi di questa mano. | 15 Now therefore do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!'" |
| 16 E anche molte cose gli servi di Sennacherib dissono contro a Dio, e contro al suo servo Ezechia. | 16 And his servants said still more against the Lord GOD and against his servant Hezekiah. |
| 17 E scrisse anche lettere, piene di blasfemie contro al Signore Iddio d' Israel, e favelloe contra di lui: sì come gli dii di tutte l'altre genti non hanno potuto liberare i suoi popoli della mia mano, così il Dio di Ezechia non potrà liberare il popolo suo di questa mano. | 17 And he wrote letters to cast contempt on the LORD the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, "Like the gods of the nations of the lands who have not delivered their people from my hands, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand." |
| 18 E sopra questo, con grande rumore, in lingua Giudea gridavano al popolo il quale sedea sopra le mura di Ierusalem, per isbigottirgli, e per prendere la città. | 18 And they shouted it with a loud voice in the language of Judah to the people of Jerusalem who were upon the wall, to frighten and terrify them, in order that they might take the city. |
| 19 E favelloe contro lo Iddio di Ierusalem, si come [contro] gli dii de' popoli e delle terre, li quali sono opere di mano d' uomini. | 19 And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands. |
| 20 E orarono Ezechia re, e Isaia figliuolo di Amos profeta, per quella blasfemia; e gridarono insino al cielo. | 20 Then Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, prayed because of this and cried to heaven. |
| 21 E il Signore mandò l'angiolo, il quale percosse ogni uomo robusto e combattitore e 'l principe [dello esercito] del re degli Assirii; e ritornò con vergogna nella terra sua. Ed entrato lui nella casa del suo iddio, i suoi figliuoli, i quali erano usciti del suo ventre, sì l'uccisero di coltello. | 21 And the LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword. |
| 22 E salvò il Signore Ezechia e gli abitatori di Ierusalem delle mani di Sennacherib re degli Assirii, e delle mani di tutti (i suoi nemici), e diede loro pace dintorno. | 22 So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all his enemies; and he gave them rest on every side. |
| 23 E molti portavano ostie e sacrificii al Signore in Ierusalem, e presenti ad Ezechia re di Giuda; il quale fu esaltato, dopo questo, nel cospetto di tutte le genti. | 23 And many brought gifts to the LORD to Jerusalem and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah, so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from that time onward. |
| 24 E in quello tempo infermò Ezechia insino alla morte, e oroe al Signore; ed esaudillo, e diedegli segnale. | 24 In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death, and he prayed to the LORD; and he answered him and gave him a sign. |
| 25 Ma egli non rendeo secondo i beneficii i quali avea ricevuti, però che il suo cuore si levoe; e fu fatta l'ira [contra lui, e] contra Giuda e Ierusalem. | 25 But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and Judah and Jerusalem. |
| 26 Ma umiliossi poi, però che [il suo cuore] s'era levato, così lui come tutti gli abitatori di Ierusalem; e però non venne sopra loro l'ira del Signore nel tempo di Ezechia. | 26 But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah. |
| 27 Ed Ezechia fu ricco e nobile molto, e congregò a sè molti tesori d' oro e d'ariento e pietre preziose, di spezie e d'armi di diverse generazioni, e di vasa di grande pregio. | 27 And Hezekiah had very great riches and honor; and he made for himself treasuries for silver, for gold, for precious stones, for spices, for shields, and for all kinds of costly vessels; |
| 28 E canove di grano e di vino e d' olio, e mangiatoje d' ogni generazione di giumenti, e mandrie di pecore, | 28 storehouses also for the yield of grain, wine, and oil; and stalls for all kinds of cattle, and sheepfolds. |
| 29 ed edificoe a sè città; però ch' egli avea armenti, e greggie di pecore innumerabili, però che il Signore gli avea data molta sostanza. | 29 He likewise provided cities for himself, and flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very great possessions. |
| 30 E questo è Ezechia, il quale otturò la fonte di sopra dell' acqua di Gion, e mandolla di sotto alla parte occidentale della città di David; in tutte le sue opere fece prosperevolmente quello che volse. | 30 This same Hezekiah closed the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and directed them down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works. |
| 31 Ma nell' ambasciata de' prìncipi di Babilonia, li quali furono mandati a lui [per] domandarlo d'uno miracolo il qual era intervenuto sopra la terra, il Signore il lasciò, acciò che fosse tentato, e fossero fatte manifeste tutte le cose le quali erano nel suo cuore. | 31 And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to try him and to know all that was in his heart. |
| 32 Tutte l'altre cose de' fatti di Ezechia, e delle sue misericordie, sono scritte nella visione d'Isaia figliuolo d' Amos profeta, e nel libro de' re di Giuda e d' Israel. | 32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. |
| 33 Dormio Ezechia coi padri suoi, e seppellironlo nelle sepolture de' figliuoli di David; e tutto Giuda celebroe le sue esequie, e tutti gli abitatori di Ierusalem; e regnò per lui il suo figliuolo Manasse. | 33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. |
