1 W trzecim roku panowania króla judzkiego Jojakima przybył król babiloński Nabuchodonozor pod Jerozolimę i oblegał ją.	1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came and laid siege to Jerusalem.
2 Pan wydał w jego ręce króla judzkiego Jojakima oraz część naczyń domu Bożego, które zabrał do ziemi Szinear do domu swego boga, umieszczając naczynia w skarbcu swego boga.	2 The Lord handed over to him Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and some of the vessels of the temple of God, which he carried off to the land of Shinar, and placed in the temple treasury of his god.
3 Król polecił następnie Aszfenazowi, przełożonemu swoich dworzan, sprowadzić spośród Izraelitów z rodu królewskiego oraz z możnowładców	3 The king told Ashpenaz, his chief chamberlain, to bring in some of the Israelites of royal blood and of the nobility,
4 młodzieńców bez jakiejkolwiek skazy, o pięknym wyglądzie, obeznanych z wszelką mądrością, posiadających wiedzę i obdarzonych rozumem, zdatnych do służby w królewskim pałacu. Zamierzał ich nauczyć pisma i języka chaldejskiego.	4 young men without any defect, handsome, intelligent and wise, quick to learn, and prudent in judgment, such as could take their place in the king's palace; they were to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans;
5 Król przydzielił im codzienną porcję potraw królewskich i wina, które pijał. Mieli być wychowywani przez trzy lata, by po ich upływie rozpocząć służbę przy królu.	5 after three years' training they were to enter the king's service. The king allotted them a daily portion of food and wine from the royal table.
6 Spośród synów judzkich byli wśród nich Daniel, Chananiasz, Miszael i Azariasz.	6 Among these were men of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
7 Nadzorca służby dworskiej nadał im imiona, Danielowi - Belteszassar, Chananiaszowi - Szadrak, Miszaelowi - Meszak, Azariaszowi zaś Abed-Nego.	7 The chief chamberlain changed their names: Daniel to Belteshazzar, Hananiah to Shadrach, Mishael to Meshach, and Azariah to Abednego.
8 Daniel powziął postanowienie, by się nie kalać potrawami królewskimi ani winem, które król pijał. Poprosił więc nadzorcę służby dworskiej, by nie musiał się kalać.	8 But Daniel was resolved not to defile himself with the king's food or wine; so he begged the chief chamberlain to spare him this defilement.
9 Bóg zaś obdarzył Daniela przychylnością i miłosierdziem nadzorcy służby dworskiej.	9 Though God had given Daniel the favor and sympathy of the chief chamberlain,
10 Nadzorca służby dworskiej powiedział do Daniela: Obawiam się, by mój pan, król, który przydzielił wam pożywienie i napoje, nie ujrzał, że wasze twarze są chudsze niż twarze młodzieńców w waszym wieku i byście nie narazili mojej głowy na niebezpieczeństwo u króla.	10 he nevertheless said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king; it is he who allotted your food and drink. If he sees that you look wretched by comparison with the other young men of your age, you will endanger my life with the king."
11 Daniel zaś powiedział do strażnika, którego ustanowił nadzorca służby dworskiej nad Danielem, Chananiaszem, Miszaelem i Azariaszem:	11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 Poddaj sługi twoje dziesięciodniowej próbie: niech nam dają jarzyny do jedzenia i wodę do picia.	12 "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13 Wtedy zobaczysz, jak my wyglądamy, a jak wyglądają młodzieńcy jedzący potrawy królewskie i postąpisz ze swoimi sługami według tego, co widziałeś.	13 Then see how we look in comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table, and treat your servants according to what you see."
14 Przystał na to żądanie i poddał ich dziesięciodniowej próbie.	14 He acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days;
15 A po upływie dziesięciu dni wygląd ich był lepszy i zdrowszy niż innych młodzieńców, którzy spożywali potrawy królewskie.	15 after ten days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young men who ate from the royal table.
16 Strażnik zabierał więc ich potrawy i wino do picia, a podawał im jarzyny.	16 So the steward continued to take away the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them vegetables.
17 Dał zaś Bóg tym czterem młodzieńcom wiedzę i umiejętność wszelkiego pisma oraz mądrość. Daniel posiadał rozeznanie wszelkich widzeń i snów.	17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and proficiency in all literature and science, and to Daniel the understanding of all visions and dreams.
18 Gdy minął okres ustalony przez króla, by ich przedstawić, nadzorca służby dworskiej wprowadził ich przed Nabuchodonozora.	18 At the end of the time the king had specified for their preparation, the chief chamberlain brought them before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Król rozmawiał z nimi, i nie można było znaleźć pośród nich wszystkich nikogo równego Danielowi, Chananiaszowi, Miszaelowi i Azariaszowi. Zaczęli więc sprawować służbę przy królu.	19 When the king had spoken with all of them, none was found equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and so they entered the king's service.
20 We wszystkich sprawach wymagających mądrości i roztropności, jakie przedkładał im król, okazywali się dziesięciokrotnie lepsi niż wszyscy wykładacze snów i wróżbici w całym jego królestwie.	20 In any question of wisdom or prudence which the king put to them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his kingdom.
21 Przebywał tam Daniel aż do pierwszego roku Cyrusa.	21 Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
