1 S'elli ti feciono loro rettore, non insuperbire; sia con coloro sì come uno di loro.	1 Have they appointed you as a leader? Do not be willing to be extolled. Be among them as one of them.
2 ... in tal guisa considera, e con ogni sollecitudine ti sforza di fare,	2 Have concern for them, and in this way sit down with them, and when you have explained all your concerns, sit back.
3 che tu allegri con loro, e in presenza ricevi l'ornamento della grazia, e acquisti la dignitade della congregazione.	3 Then you may rejoice because of them, and you may receive a crown as an adornment of grace, and so obtain the dignity of the assembly.
4 Tu, più antico di loro, favella; elli si conviene a te	4 Speak, you who are greater by birth. For it is fitting for you
5 lo primo sermone d'uomo che ami iscienza; e non impedire il loro cantare.	5 to speak the first word with careful knowledge. But you should not hinder the music.
6 Dove non è udienza, non impacciare la tua parola; e non ti esaltare importunamente nella tua sapienza.	6 Where no one is listening, you should not pour out words. And do not choose to be extolled improperly for your wisdom.
7 La gemma del carbonculo nell' ornamento dell' oro è l'agguagliezza delli stromenti musici nel convito del vino.	7 A gemstone of garnet is set amid an ornament of gold, and a concert of music is set amid a banquet of wine.
8 Così come nella fabbricazione dell' oro è il segno dello smeraglio, così è il numero della musica nel gaudente e temperato vino.	8 Just as a signet of emerald is set amid a work of gold, so is a melody of music set amid delightful and moderate wine.
9 Odi, tacendo; per la riverenza (che porterai agli altri) ti verrà buona grazia.	9 Listen silently, and for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.
10 Tu, giovane, appena quando sarà necessario favella nella tua questione.	10 Young man, speak in your own case only reluctantly.
11 Se tu sarai due volte domandato, abbia fine la tua risposta.	11 If you have been asked twice, let your response be concise.
12 Intra molti sii sì come non saputo, e odi tacendo e domandando.	12 In many matters, be as if you lack knowledge, and listen silently as well as intently.
13 E non presumere (di parlare) in mezzo delli grandi uomini; e dove sono li vecchi, non parlare molto.	13 In the midst of great men, you should not be presumptuous. And where the elders are present, you should not speak much.
14 Il lampeggiare va inanzi alla gragnuola, e la grazia vae dinanzi al vergognarsi, e per la tua riverenza ti verrà buona grazia.	14 Lightning goes before a hailstorm, and grace goes before modesty. And so, for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.
15 E nell' ora del (dì allo) levare non ti tristare; tu primo anticorri nella casa tua, e prima chiama gli altri, e quivi ti sollazza.	15 And at the hour for rising, you should not be lax. Later, be the first to run ahead to your house, and there withdraw, and there take your pastime.
16 E opera li concetti del tuo animo, ma non in peccati nè in parole superbe.	16 And act according to your intentions, but not in sin and not in arrogant speech.
17 Sopra queste cose tutte sarae la benedizione di Dio, il quale (Dio) ti fece, e che empie te di tutti li suoi beni.	17 And for all these things, bless the Lord, who made you, and who fills you to overflowing with all his good things.
18 Colui che teme Iddio, riceverà la dottrina sua; e chi veglierae con lui, troverae la benedizione (sua).	18 Whoever fears the Lord will accept his doctrine. And whoever watches for him diligently will find a blessing.
19 Chi cerca la legge, sarà ripieno di quella; e chi ingannevolmente adopererae (la legge), si iscandalizzerà in lei.	19 Whoever seeks the law will be filled from the law. But whoever acts with treachery will be scandalized by treachery.
20 Chi teme Iddio, troverà giusta sentenza; e apprenderanno le giustizie (in lui), sì come uno lume.	20 Those who fear the Lord will find just judgment, and they will kindle justice like a light.
21 L'uomo peccatore schiferà la correzione, e a sua volontà troverà somiglianza.	21 A sinful man will shun correction, and he will find a rationalization in accord with his own will.
22 L'uomo savio non dispregerà la intelligenza; lo matto e il superbo non temerà il timore,	22 A man of counsel will not reject understanding. A strange and arrogant man will not be disturbed by fear.
23 eziandio poi che averà fatto con esso sanza consiglio, e poi ch' ello fia ripreso in quelle cose ch' elli seguirà.	23 Even so, after he has acted out of fear and without counsel, he will be rebuked by his own criticism.
24 Figliuolo, nulla fare sanza consiglio, e dopo il fatto non te ne pentirai.	24 Son, you should do nothing without counsel, and then you will not regret what you have done.
25 Non andare nella via della ruina, e non percuotere li piedi nelle pietre; non ti commettere alla faticosa via; non porre all' anima tua scandalo.	25 You should not go into the way of ruin, and you then will not stumble on stones. You should not commit yourself to a laborious way; otherwise, you may set up a scandal against your own soul.
26 E guàrdati da' tuoi figliuoli, e da quelli che ti saranno familiari.	26 And be cautious concerning your own sons. And be attentive to those of your own household.
27 In ogni tua opera credi all' anima tua di fede; però che questa si è la conservazione de' comandamenti.	27 In all of your works, trust your soul to faith. For this is the keeping of the commandments.
28 E chi crede a Dio, attende alli comandamenti; e chi si fida in lui, non dibasserae.	28 Whoever believes God attends to the commandments. And whoever trusts in him will not be diminished.
