| 1 E dopo questo addivenne che avendo udito queste parole Iudit vedova, la qual era figliuola di Merari, figliuolo di Idox, figliuolo di Iosef, figliuolo di Ozia, figliuolo di Elai, figliuolo di Iamnor, figliuolo di Gedeon, figliuolo di Rafaim, figliuolo di Achitob, figliuolo di Melchia, figliuolo di Enan, figliuolo di Natania, figliuolo di Salatiel, figliuolo di Simeon, figliuolo di Ruben; | 1 At that time Judith heard about these things: she was the daughter of Merari the son of Ox, son of Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son of Elijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel. |
| 2 e lo marito di Iudit fu Manasse, lo qual morì nel tempo della mietitura dell' orzo; | 2 Her husband Manasseh, who belonged to her tribe and family, had died during the barley harvest. |
| 3 però ch' egli stava sopra quelli che ligavano li fasci nel campo, e il caldo li percosse lo capo, e per questo morissi nella sua città chiamata Betulia, e ivi fu seppellito con li padri suoi. | 3 For as he stood overseeing the men who were binding sheaves in the field, he was overcome by the burning heat, and took to his bed and died in Bethulia his city. So they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon. |
| 4 Ed era Iudit già stata vedova (e senza marito) tre anni e sei mesi. | 4 Judith had lived at home as a widow for three years and four months. |
| 5 E nella parte di sopra della sua casa si fece una camera secreta, nella quale con le sue fanciulle sì stava chiusa. | 5 She set up a tent for herself on the roof of her house, and girded sackcloth about her loins and wore the garments of her widowhood. |
| 6 E avea sopra li suoi lombi lo cilicio, e digiunava tutti li dì della vita sua, fuori che li sabbati e li primi dì della luna e le feste della casa d' Israel. | 6 She fasted all the days of her widowhood, except the day before the sabbath and the sabbath itself, the day before the new moon and the day of the new moon, and the feasts and days of rejoicing of the house of Israel. |
| 7 Ed era di uno troppo elegante aspetto, alla quale lo marito suo li avea lasciato molte ricchezze, e una grande famiglia, e (molte) possessioni piene di armenti di buoi e di greggie di pecore. | 7 She was beautiful in appearance, and had a very lovely face; and her husband Manasseh had left her gold and silver, and men and women slaves, and cattle, and fields; and she maintained this estate. |
| 8 E questa era sopra tutti famosissima, però che temea molto Iddio, e non si trovava chi dicesse di lei una mala parola. | 8 No one spoke ill of her, for she feared God with great devotion. |
| 9 E avendo udilo (Iudit), che Ozia avea promesso che passato il quinto dì daria la città (allo esercito di Oloferne), mandò alli due principali della terra, cioè Cabri e Carmi. | 9 When Judith heard the wicked words spoken by the people against the ruler, because they were faint for lack of water, and when she heard all that Uzziah said to them, and how he promised them under oath to surrender the city to the Assyrians after five days, |
| 10 E vennero a lei, e disse loro: che cosa è questa, che ha consentito Ozia, di dar la città agli Assirii, se fra spazio di cinque di non verrà a voi adiutorio? | 10 she sent her maid, who was in charge of all she possessed, to summon Chabris and Charmis, the elders of her city. |
| 11 E chi siete voi, i quali tentate lo Signore Iddio? | 11 They came to her, and she said to them, "Listen to me, rulers of the people of Bethulia! What you have said to the people today is not right; you have even sworn and pronounced this oath between God and you, promising to surrender the city to our enemies unless the Lord turns and helps us within so many days. |
| 12 Queste non sono le parole, le quali vi provocheranno la misericordia (di Dio), ma più tosto conciteranno contro a voi ira, e accenderanno lo furore (di Dio). | 12 Who are you, that have put God to the test this day, and are setting yourselves up in the place of God among the sons of men? |
| 13 Voi vi avete posto il tempo della misericordia di Dio, e nel vostro arbitrio gli avete ordinato (e statuto) lo dì. | 13 You are putting the Lord Almighty to the test--but you will never know anything! |
| 14 Ma perchè Iddiò è paziente, in questo istesso pentiamoci, e dimandiamo perdonanza a lui con lacrime. | 14 You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart, nor find out what a man is thinking; how do you expect to search out God, who made all these things, and find out his mind or comprehend his thought? No, my brethren, do not provoke the Lord our God to anger. |
| 15 Però che Iddio non si conduce come l' uomo, nè si infiammerà ad iracondia come lo figliuolo dell' uomo. | 15 For if he does not choose to help us within these five days, he has power to protect us within any time he pleases, or even to destroy us in the presence of our enemies. |
| 16 E però umiliamo l' anime nostre a lui, e nel spirito umiliato e contrito serviamo a lui. | 16 Do not try to bind the purposes of the Lord our God; for God is not like man, to be threatened, nor like a human being, to be won over by pleading. |
| 17 Diciamo piagnendo al Signore, che faccia secondo la sua volontade con noi la misericordia sua; che sì come il cuore nostro è conturbato nella superbia loro, così ci gloriamo della nostra umiltade. | 17 Therefore, while we wait for his deliverance, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our voice, if it pleases him. |
| 18 Però che noi non siamo seguitati i peccati de' nosiri padri, i quali abbandonarono il suo Dio, e adorarono i dii d'altri. | 18 "For never in our generation, nor in these present days, has there been any tribe or family or people or city of ours which worshiped gods made with hands, as was done in days gone by-- |
| 19 Per lo qual peccato dati furono in uccisione e in rubamento e in confusione alli nemici loro; ma noi non sappiamo altro Iddio fuori che lui. | 19 and that was why our fathers were handed over to the sword, and to be plundered, and so they suffered a great catastrophe before our enemies. |
| 20 Aspettiamo dunque umilmente la consolazione sua, e cercherà lo sangue nostro nelle afflizioni de' nostri nemici, e umilierà tutte le genti le quali si levano contro a noi, e faralle lo nostro Signore Dio sanza onore. | 20 But we know no other god but him, and therefore we hope that he will not disdain us or any of our nation. |
| 21 E ora, fratelli, i quali siete li maggiori nel popolo di Dio, e da voi dipende l'anima loro, al parlare vostro dirizzate i cuori loro, acciò che si ricordino, che i padri nostri furono tentati, acciò che fossero provati se amavano il suo Iddio veramente. | 21 For if we are captured all Judea will be captured and our sanctuary will be plundered; and he will exact of us the penalty for its desecration. |
| 22 Debbonsi ricordare, come il padre nostro Abraam fu tentato, e provato per molte tribolazioni fu fatto amico di Dio. | 22 And the slaughter of our brethren and the captivity of the land and the desolation of our inheritance--all this he will bring upon our heads among the Gentiles, wherever we serve as slaves; and we shall be an offense and a reproach in the eyes of those who acquire us. |
| 23 Così Isaac, così Iacob, così Moisè, e tutti quelli i quali piacquero a Dio, per molte tribolazioni passarono fedeli. | 23 For our slavery will not bring us into favor, but the Lord our God will turn it to dishonor. |
| 24 Ma quelli, li quali non riceverono le tentazioni con lo timore di Dio, e la impazienza sua e lo impeto della sua mormorazione proferirono contro a Dio, | 24 "Now therefore, brethren, let us set an example to our brethren, for their lives depend upon us, and the sanctuary and the temple and the altar rest upon us. |
| 25 furono esterminati dallo esterminatore, e perirono dalli serpenti. | 25 In spite of everything let us give thanks to the Lord our God, who is putting us to the test as he did our forefathers. |
| 26 E noi non cerchiamo vendetta per quelle cose che noi siamo afflitti. | 26 Remember what he did with Abraham, and how he tested Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in Mesopotamia in Syria, while he was keeping the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother. |
| 27 Ma pensiamo questi esser piccoli supplizii per i peccati nostri, e crediamo che gli flagelli del Signore siano avvenuti a noi, come a servi suoi, per nostra emendazione, e non a nostra perdizione. | 27 For he has not tried us with fire, as he did them, to search their hearts, nor has he taken revenge upon us; but the Lord scourges those who draw near to him, in order to admonish them." |
| 28 E dissero a lei Ozia e quelli altri principali: tutte quelle cose che tu hai parlato sono vere, e nel tuo parlare non v'è reprensione alcuna. | 28 Then Uzziah said to her, "All that you have said has been spoken out of a true heart, and there is no one who can deny your words. |
| 29 Ora adunque priega per noi, però che tu sei una donna santa e che teme Iddio. | 29 Today is not the first time your wisdom has been shown, but from the beginning of your life all the people have recognized your understanding, for your heart's disposition is right. |
| 30 E disse loro Iudit: come voi conoscete esser da Dio quello ch' io ho potuto dire, | 30 But the people were very thirsty, and they compelled us to do for them what we have promised, and made us take an oath which we cannot break. |
| 31 così anco provate, quello ch' io ho deliberato di fare, se è da Dio; e pregate che Iddio facci il mio consiglio stabilire. | 31 So pray for us, since you are a devout woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns and we will no longer be faint." |
| 32 Voi starete alla porta questa notte, e io uscirò con Abra mia serva; e pregate che così come voi avete detto, che in cinque dì Iddio abbi riguardo (e abbi rispetto) al suo popolo d'Israel. | 32 Judith said to them, "Listen to me. I am about to do a thing which will go down through all generations of our descendants. |
| 33 Ma io non voglio che voi sappiate quello ch' io mi voglio fare; e persino ch' io non vi dico altro, non si facci altro se non pregare per me al Signore Iddio nostro. | 33 Stand at the city gate tonight, and I will go out with my maid; and within the days after which you have promised to surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will deliver Israel by my hand. |
| 34 E disse a lei Ozia principe di Giuda: va in pace, e il Signore sia teco in vendetta delli nostri nemici. E partendosi se n'andarono. | 34 Only, do not try to find out what I plan; for I will not tell you until I have finished what I am about to do." |
| 35 Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you, to take revenge upon our enemies." |
| 36 So they returned from the tent and went to their posts. |
