Livro de Josué 7

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Os israelitas cometeram uma infidelidade a respeito do interdito. Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zabdi, filho de Zara, da tribo de Judá, reteve para si algumas coisas condenadas, e a cólera do Senhor inflamou-se contra os israelitas.	1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites.
2 Josué enviou de Jericó homens a Hai, situada junto de Bet-Aven, ao oriente de Betel: Subi, disse-lhes ele, e explorai a terra. Eles subiram e exploraram Hai.	2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai.
3 Voltando para junto de Josué, disseram-lhe: É inútil o povo todo subir, mas vão só dois ou três mil homens e apoderem-se da cidade. Não se fatigue todo o povo, porque a população da cidade é muito reduzida.	3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!'
4 Três mil homens aproximadamente se puseram a caminho, mas foram batidos pela gente de Hai,	4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai,
5 caindo mortos trinta e seis homens; os inimigos perseguiram-nos desde a porta da cidade até Sabarim, ainda quando fugiam pela encosta. O povo ficou consternado com isso e perdeu toda a coragem.	5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water.
6 Josué rasgou suas vestes e prostrou-se com a face por terra até a tarde diante da arca do Senhor, tanto ele como os anciãos de Israel, e cobriram de pó as suas cabeças.	6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads.
7 Ah, Senhor Javé, clamou Josué, por que fizestes este povo passar o Jordão, para nos entregardes nas mãos dos amorreus que nos destruirão? Oxalá tivéssemos ficado do outro lado do rio!	7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan!
8 Que direi eu, Senhor, vendo Israel voltar as costas aos seus inimigos?	8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy?
9 Os cananeus e todos os habitantes da terra vão sabê-lo, e nos cercarão e farão desaparecer o nosso nome da face da terra. E que fareis vós ao vosso grande nome?	9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?'
10 Então o Senhor disse a Josué: Levanta-te. Por que estás assim prostrado com a face por terra?	10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this?
11 Israel pecou, a ponto de violar a aliança que eu lhe tinha prescrito, e a ponto de tomar as coisas votadas ao interdito, roubá-las, ocultá-las, escondê-las entre as bagagens.	11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage.
12 Eis por que os israelitas não puderam resistir aos seus inimigos, mas voltaram-lhes as costas, pois caíram sob o interdito. Se não tirardes o interdito do meio de vós, não estarei mais convosco de ora em diante.	12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.'
13 Vai santificar o povo; dize-lhe: purificai-vos para amanhã, porque eis o que diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: o interdito está no meio de ti, Israel. Não poderás resistir aos teus inimigos, enquanto não tiveres tirado o interdito que está no meio de vós.	13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction.
14 Vireis amanhã, tribo por tribo; a tribo que for designada pelo Senhor apresentar-se-á família por família; e a família marcada se apresentará por suas casas; e a casa indicada pelo Senhor se apresentará por pessoas.	14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man.
15 Aquele que for designado como possuidor do interdito será queimado, ele e tudo o que lhe pertence, porque violou o pacto do Senhor e cometeu uma infâmia em Israel.	15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." '
16 No dia seguinte pela manhã, Josué mandou vir o povo, tribo por tribo, e a sorte caiu sobre a tribo de Judá.	16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah.
17 Em seguida, aproximando-se as famílias de Judá, a sorte indicou a família de Zara. Mandou que se aproximasse a família de Zara por casas, e a sorte caiu sobre a de Zabdi,	17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi.
18 a qual se apresentou por pessoas; a sorte caiu sobre Acã, filho de Carmi, filho de Zabdi, filho de Zara, da tribo de Judá.	18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.
19 Josué disse-lhe: Meu filho, dá glória e homenagem ao Senhor, Deus de Israel; confessa-me o que fizeste, sem nada ocultar.	19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.'
20 Acã respondeu a Josué: Sim, fui eu que pequei contra o Senhor, Deus de Israel. Eis o que fiz:	20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done.
21 vi no meio dos despojos um belo manto de Senaar, duzentos siclos de prata e uma barra de ouro de cinqüenta siclos e, cobiçando, tomei-os. Tudo isso se acha escondido na terra no meio de minha tenda e a prata debaixo {do manto}.	21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.'
22 Josué mandou alguns homens que investigassem a tenda, e estes viram que os objetos estavam lá ocultos, e a prata debaixo.	22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath.
23 Tomaram-nos e trouxeram-nos a Josué e a todos os israelitas e puseram-nos diante do Senhor.	23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh.
24 Então Josué, em presença de todo o Israel, pegando em Acã, filho de Zara, com a prata, o manto, a barra de ouro, os filhos e as filhas de Acã, seus bois, seus jumentos, suas ovelhas, sua tenda e tudo o que lhe pertencia, levou-os ao vale de Acor.	24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him.
25 Chegando ali, Josué disse: Por que nos confundiste? O Senhor te confunda hoje! Todos os israelitas o apedrejaram. E foram queimados no fogo depois de terem sido apedrejados.	25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them).
26 E juntaram sobre Acã um grande monte de pedras, o qual subsiste ainda hoje. Com isso aplacou-se o furor do Senhor. É por esse motivo que o lugar traz ainda agora o nome de vale de Acor.	26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today.
