SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Contudo, para vossos santos havia uma luz brilhantíssima. Sem verem seus semblantes, os outros ouviam-lhes a voz, e julgavam-nos felizes por não sofrerem os mesmos tormentos.	1 For your holy ones, however, there was a very great light. The Egyptians, who could hear them but notsee them, cal ed them fortunate because they had not suffered too;
2 Davam-lhes graças, porque não se vingavam dos maus tratos suportados, e pediam-lhes perdão de sua inimizade.	2 they thanked them for doing no injury in return for previous wrongs and asked forgiveness for theirpast il -wil .
3 Pelo contrário, vós destes uma coluna luminosa para guiá-los na sua marcha para o desconhecido, como um sol que sem incomodá-los alumiava seu glorioso êxodo.	3 In contrast to the darkness, you gave your people a pil ar of blazing fire to guide them on theirunknown journey, a mild sun for their ambitious migration.
4 Mas eles bem mereciam ser privados da luz e aprisionados nas trevas, eles, que tinham encerrado em	4 But well those others deserved to be deprived of light and imprisoned in darkness, for they had kept incaptivity your children, by whom the incorruptible light of the Law was to be given to the world.
5 Também tinham resolvido levar à morte os filhos dos santos, mas um deles foi exposto e salvo, e para puni-los fizestes perecer em multidão os seus filhos, e, todos juntos, vós os aniquilastes na profundeza das águas.	5 As they had resolved to kill the infants of the holy ones, and as of those exposed only one child hadbeen saved, you punished them by carrying off their horde of children and by destroying them al in the wildwater.
6 Esta mesma noite tinha sido conhecida de antemão por nossos pais, para que, conhecendo bem em que juramentos confiavam, ficassem cheios de coragem.	6 That night had been known in advance to our ancestors, so that, wel knowing him in whom they hadput their trust, they would be sure of his promises.
7 Assim vosso povo esperava tanto a salvação dos justos como a perdição dos ímpios,	7 Your people thus were waiting both for the rescue of the upright and for the ruin of the enemy;
8 e pelo mesmo fato de terdes destruído nossos inimigos, vós nos convidastes a ser vossos e nos honrastes.	8 for by the very vengeance that you exacted on our adversaries, you glorified us by calling us to you.
9 Por isso, os santos filhos dos justos ofereciam secretamente um sacrifício; de comum acordo estabeleciam o pacto divino: que os santos participariam dos mesmos bens e correriam os mesmos perigos; e entoavam já os hinos de seus pais,	9 So the holy children of the good offered sacrifice in secret and with one accord enacted this holy law:that the holy ones should share good things and dangers alike; and forthwith they chanted the hymns of theancestors.
10 quando se elevaram os gritos confusos dos inimigos e se espalharam as lamentações dos que choravam seus filhos.	10 In echo came the discordant cries of their enemies, and the pitiful wails of people mourning for theirchildren could be heard from far away.
11 Uma mesma sentença feria o escravo e o senhor, o homem do povo sofria o mesmo castigo que o rei.	11 One and the same punishment had struck slave and master alike, and now commoner and king hadthe same sufferings to endure.
12 Todos igualmente tinham um número incalculável de mortos abatidos da mesma maneira; os sobreviventes não eram suficientes para sepultá-los. porque, num instante, sua melhor geração era exterminada.	12 Struck by the same death, al had innumerable dead. There were not enough living left to bury them,for, at one stroke, the flower of their offspring had perished.
13 Depois de terem permanecido incrédulos por causa de seus sortilégios, reconheceram, vendo morrer seus primogênitos, que esse povo era verdadeiramente filho de Deus,	13 Those whose spel s had made them completely incredulous, when faced with the destruction of theirfirst-born, acknowledged this people to be child of God.
14 porque, quando um profundo silêncio envolvia todas as coisas, e a noite chegava ao meio de seu curso, 15. vossa palavra todo-poderosa desceu dos céus e do trono real, e, qual um implacável guerreiro, arremessou-se sobre a terra condenada à ruína.	14 When peaceful silence lay over all, and night had run the half of her swift course,
	15 down from the heavens, from the royal throne, leapt your al -powerful Word like a pitiless warrior intothe heart of a land doomed to destruction. Carrying your unambiguous command like a sharp sword,
16 De pé, ela tudo encheu de morte, e, pisando a terra, tocava os céus.	16 it stood, and fil ed the universe with death; though standing on the earth, it touched the sky.
17 No mesmo instante, visões e sonhos terríveis os perturbaram, e temores inesperados os assaltaram; 18. tombando aqui e acolá, semimortos, revelavam a causa da morte que os atingia;	17 Immediately, dreams and gruesome visions overwhelmed them with terror, unexpected fearsassailed them.
	18 Hurled down, some here, some there, half dead, they were able to say why they were dying;
19 porque os sonhos que os tinham agitado tinham-nos informado antecipadamente, para que eles não perecessem sem conhecer a causa de sua desgraça.	19 for the dreams that had troubled them had warned them why beforehand, so that they should notperish without knowing why they were being afflicted.
20 Verdade é que a prova da morte feriu também os justos, e numerosos foram os que ela abateu no deserto, mas a ira de Deus não durou muito tempo;	20 Experience of death, however, touched the upright too, and a great many were struck down in thedesert. But the Retribution did not last long,
21 porque um homem irrepreensível se apressou a tomar sua defesa, servindo-se das armas de seu ministério pessoal, a oração e o sacrifício expiatório do incenso. Opôs-se à ira, e pôs fim ao flagelo, mostrando que era vosso servo.	21 for a blameless man hurried to their defence. Wielding the weapons of his sacred office, prayer andexpiating incense, he confronted Retribution and put an end to the plague, thus showing that he was yourservant.
22 Dominou a revolta, não pela força física, nem pela força das armas, mas pela sua palavra deteve aquele que castigava, relembrando-lhe os juramentos feitos aos antepassados e a aliança estabelecida.	22 He overcame Hostility, not by physical strength, nor by force of arms; but by word he prevailed overthe Punisher, by recal ing the oaths made to the Fathers, and the covenants.
23 Já os mortos se amontoavam uns sobre os outros, quando ele interveio, deteve a cólera e afastou-a dos vivos.	23 Already the corpses lay piled in heaps, when he interposed and beat Retribution back and cut off itsapproach to the living.
24 Na sua longa vestimenta estava representado o universo inteiro; nas quatro fileiras de pedras os nomes gloriosos dos patriarcas; e no diadema de sua cabeça vossa Majestade.	24 For the whole world was on his flowing robe, the glorious names of the Fathers engraved on the fourrows of stones, and your Majesty on the diadem on his head.
25 Diante destas coisas cedeu o exterminador e foi diante destas coisas que retrocedeu: porque a simples demonstração de vossa ira era suficiente.	25 From these the Destroyer recoiled, he was afraid of these. This one experience of Retribution wasenough.
