SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Outro, por sua vez, que quer navegar e se prepara para atravessar as impetuosas ondas, invoca um madeiro de pior qualidade que o navio que o leva;	1 Or someone else, taking ship to cross the wild waves, loudly invokes a piece of wood frailer than thevessel that bears him.
2 porque o desejo do lucro inventou o navio, e uma hábil sabedoria dirigiu sua construção.	2 Agreed, the ship is the product of a craving for gain, its building embodies the wisdom of theshipwright;
3 Mas sois vós, Pai, que o governais pela vossa Providência, porque, se abristes caminho, mesmo no mar, e uma rota segura no meio das ondas -	3 but your providence, Father, is what steers it, you having opened a pathway even through the sea, anda safe way over the waves,
4 mostrando por aí que vós podeis tirar do perigo aquele que as afronta mesmo sem meios -,	4 showing that you can save, whatever happens, so that, even without experience, someone may put tosea.
5 quereis entretanto que não sejam inúteis as obras de vossa sabedoria. Por isso os homens confiam a própria vida a um pouco de madeira e atravessam em segurança as ondas num navio.	5 It is not your will that the works of your Wisdom should be sterile, so people entrust their lives to thesmal est piece of wood, cross the waves on a raft, yet are kept safe and sound.
6 Assim, com efeito, quando na origem dos tempos fizestes perecer gigantes orgulhosos, a esperança do universo, refugiando-se num barco, que vossa mão governava, conservou para o mundo o germe de uma geração.	6 Why, in the beginning, when the proud giants were perishing, the hope of the world took refuge on araft and, steered by your hand, preserved the seed of a new generation for the ages to come.
7 Porque é bendito o madeiro pelo qual se opera a justiça,	7 For blessed is the wood which serves the cause of uprightness
8 mas maldito é o ídolo, ele e o que o fez; este porque o formou, aquele porque, sendo corruptível, leva o nome de deus.	8 but accursed the man-made idol, yes, it and its maker, he for having made it, and it because, though perishable, it has been called god.
9 Com efeito, Deus odeia tanto o ímpio quanto sua impiedade,	9 For God holds the godless and his godlessness in equal hatred;
10 e a obra sofrerá o mesmo castigo que o autor.	10 both work and workman wil alike be punished.
11 Este é o motivo porque também os ídolos das nações serão julgados, porque, na criação de Deus, eles se tornaram uma abominação, objetos de escândalo para os homens, e laços para os pés dos insensatos.	11 Hence even the idols of the nations wil have a visitation since, in God's creation, they have becomean abomination, a scandal for human souls, a snare for the feet of the foolish.
12 É pela idealização dos ídolos que começou a apostasia, e sua invenção foi a perda dos humanos.	12 The idea of making idols was the origin of fornication, their discovery corrupted life.
13 Eles não existiam no princípio e não durarão para sempre;	13 They did not exist at the beginning, they will not exist for ever;
14 a vaidade dos homens os introduziu no mundo. E, por causa disso, Deus decidiu a sua destruição para breve.	14 human vanity brought them into the world, and a quick end is therefore reserved for them.
15 Um pai aflito por um luto prematuro, tendo mandado fazer a imagem do filho, tão cedo arrebatado, honrou, em seguida, como a um deus aquele que não passava de um morto, e transmitiu, aos seus, certos ritos secretos e cerimônias.	15 A father afflicted by untimely mourning has an image made of his child so soon carried off, and nowpays divine honours to what yesterday was only a corpse, handing on mysteries and ceremonies to his people;
16 Este costume ímpio, tendo-se firmado com o tempo, foi depois observado como lei.	16 time passes, the custom hardens and is observed as law.
17 Foi também em conseqüência das ordens dos príncipes que se adoraram imagens esculpidas, porque aqueles que não podiam honrar pessoalmente, porque moravam longe deles, fizeram representar o que se achava distante, e expuseram publicamente a imagem do rei venerado, a fim de lisonjeá-lo de longe com seu zelo, como se estivesse presente.	17 Rulers were the ones who ordered that statues should be worshipped: people who could not honourthem in person, because they lived too far away, would have a portrait made of their distant countenance, tohave an image that they could see of the king whom they honoured; meaning, by such zeal, to flatter the absentas if he were present.
18 Isto contribuiu ainda para o estabelecimento deste culto, mesmo entre os que não conheciam o rei; foi a ambição do artista,	18 Even people who did not know him were stimulated into spreading his cult by the artist's enthusiasm;
19 que, talvez, querendo agradar ao soberano, deu-lhe, por sua arte, a semelhança do belo;	19 for the latter, doubtless wishing to please his ruler, exerted all his skill to surpass the reality,
20 e a multidão, seduzida pelo encanto da obra, em breve tomou por deus aquele que tinham honrado como homem.	20 and the crowd, attracted by the beauty of the work, mistook for a god someone whom recently theyhad honoured as a man.
21 E isto foi uma cilada para a humanidade: os homens, sujeitando-se à lei da desgraça e da tirania, deram à pedra e à madeira o nome incomunicável.	21 And this became a snare for life: that people, whether enslaved by misfortune or by tyranny, shouldhave conferred the ineffable Name on sticks and stones.
22 Como se não bastasse terem errado acerca do conhecimento de Deus, embora passando a vida numa longa luta de ignorância, eles dão o nome de paz a um estado tão infeliz.	22 It is not enough, however, for them to have such misconceptions about God; for, living in the fiercewarfare of ignorance, they call these terrible evils peace.
23 Com efeito, sacrificando seus filhos, celebrando mistérios ocultos, ou entregando-se a orgias desenfreadas de religiões exóticas,	23 With their child-murdering rites, their occult mysteries, or their frenzied orgies with outlandishcustoms,
24 eles já não guardam a honestidade nem na vida nem no casamento, mas um faz desaparecer o outro pelo ardil, ou o ultraja pelo adultério.	24 they no longer retain any purity in their lives or their marriages, one treacherously murdering anotheror wronging him by adultery.
25 Tudo está numa confusão completa - sangue, homicídio, furto, fraude, corrupção, deslealdade, revolta, perjúrio,	25 Everywhere a welter of blood and murder, theft and fraud, corruption, treachery, riot, perjury,
26 perseguição dos bons, esquecimento dos benefícios, contaminação das almas, perversão dos sexos, instabilidade das uniões, adultérios e impudicícias -	26 disturbance of decent people, forgetfulness of favours, pol ution of souls, sins against nature,disorder in marriage, adultery and debauchery.
27 porque o culto de inomináveis ídolos é o começo, a causa e o fim de todo o mal.	27 For the worship of idols with no name is the beginning, cause, and end of every evil.
28 (Seus adeptos) incitam o prazer até a loucura, ou fazem vaticínios falsos, ou vivem na injustiça, ou, sem escrúpulo, juram falso,	28 For these people either carry their merrymaking to the point of frenzy, or they prophesy what is nottrue, or they live wicked lives, or they perjure themselves without hesitation;
29 porque, confiando em ídolos inanimados, esperam não ser punidos de sua má fé.	29 since they put their trust in lifeless idols they do not reckon their false oaths can harm them.
30 Contudo, o castigo os atingirá por duplo motivo: porque eles desconheceram a Deus, afeiçoando-se aos ídolos, e porque são culpados, por desprezo à santidade da religião, de ter feito juramentos enganadores.	30 But they wil be justly punished for this double crime: for degrading the concept of God by adhering toidols; and for wickedly perjuring themselves in contempt for what is holy.
31 Pois não é o poder dos ídolos invocados, mas o castigo reservado ao pecador, que sempre persegue as faltas dos maus.	31 For it is not the power of the things by which they swear but the punishment reserved for sinners thatalways fol ows the offences of wicked people.
